Neti is a strange sounding indian practice which involves pouring water in one nostril and letting it run out the other. I've heard about it for a long time but never used it. Well, for the past 10 or 15 years I've had allergy type symptoms, I often have a sneezing fit many days, I will sneeze 3 to 8 times and my nose may run for a while. I could never figure out what did it. It happened year around so is probably not hay fever.
Recently it got worse, it was every day and nose running most of the day. Out of desperation I tried this and it is working. My symptoms have reduced 80 to 90% and I've only been using it a few days. No symptoms yet today. You need a special neti pot, I ordered a cheap one off ebay for a couple bucks. I've been using an eye dropper that holds a few milliliters and tilting my head to the side and squirting it in. Make sure it gets into the sinus area. You want to mix a little bit of salt with the water. They say a heaping 1/4 tsp per 8oz of water. Without the salt it will burn. They say use distilled or purified water not tap water. I never drink tap water anyway, its full of junk.
Look up neti on duckduckgo and see what you think. It should help a lot with allergy symptoms, infections and so on. Its harmless and might help a lot. I use it every day now.
Neti pots sound weird and gross until you actually use one and have a good result. Good recommendation.@Grandote. R.
I can't seem to contort the correct way to properly use a Net pot.
However, in the drugstore I found a substitute that only requires me to bend straight forward over the sink. Â It's shape is like a big bulb that you squeeze to direct the water mix up the nose. Â It might be called Sinu Cleanse or similar.Â
It came with salt packets to mix with the water. Â My husband hated it, but I liked it okay.Â
Still, I would rather use antihistamine pills and nose spray most times, but if my symptoms get desperate, then I add this to my routine.

Lol, probably saved me years ago as I watched friends back in the era doing coke, but that involved my nose. Â So no way!
I've always wondered about those. I have to use my Afrin like crazy all the time, especially when I go to bed. For some reason when I lay down I start to plug up. I know it's really a mind thing, but I freak out when I can't breathe thru my nose. I panic. I wonder if my sinus problems have anything to do with the accident I had that gave me all of these wonderful injuries. I had a concussion, fractured skull, broken jaw and pretty much smashed in the right side of my face. Lots of broken bones in my face. Could that maybe have something to do with a constantly plugged sinuses?
Afrin is like my American express card. I CAN'T leave home without it. I'm hooked on that damn stuff from using it all day, every day for many yrs. If there is a better way, I'll have to give it a go.
Thanks for that info Grandote. You might be my hero LOL.
Shayna, I didn't know there was something in the stores like that. I will look it up, it can't be cheaper than the chinese one I ordered but you will get it faster if they have it here.
Harley, too bad you can't use it. I have a similar phobia about anything going into my eyes, like eye drops even if I do it myself. Goes back I think to when my father used to give me some eye drops when I was a tiny kid. He was always rough and I learned to fear drops. I can do it but I have to kind of hold my eye open because I still want to keep it shut to stop the drops. No logical reason but what can you do?
cricket, best of luck to you. I have no idea either why I get the sinus issues. If it was pollen then it would only be when there was pollen going around but it happens in winter too and year around. I didn't sneeze once yesterday, still had a tiny bit of post nasal drip. I just now sneezed as I'm writing this, lol, but I haven't had my neti yet. I will do so promptly.
Yes, I do. But they take a while to get the hang of.
I would recommend you have an experienced practitioner teach how to use one properly, before using one, and showing you the type (there are many) that would suit you best.
Believe it or not sea water is the bomb for these neti pots.
Best wishes. CL
I would be very cautious about using sea water. It contains lots of plankton which includes tiny animals and plants also dirt, debis, bacteria and viruses. Baby jellyfish for example can sting, other baby fish are found and they are tiny. Plant life includes algae some of which are toxic such as red tide. Boiling the water and filtering it well should remove most of that, maybe use a coffee filter.
I just toss in a pinch of table salt, easy peasy.
I don't use a neti pot for sinus issues, but I use Simply Saline Nasal Mist sold by Arm & Hammer for nasal congestion and moisturizer.
It is safe to use as often as needed and doesn't carry the risk for germ contamination as long as one person only uses the spray. It helps me tremendously.
There is also a spray to use for babies that you can buy that is safe and effective.
Love my neti. Â It was weird at first but I've been using mine for a few years with great results. Â I probably wouldn't use sea water, either. Â Been watching too much of "The Monster Inside Me" . Â Has anyone seen this show? Â There are a gazillion weird parasites and a lot of them live in water. Â The last one I watched was about a guy who scraped his ankle on some rocks and then stood in the water to fish. Â Long story short, he almost died. Â He ended up with some flesh eating parasite which sent him into toxic shock. Â I'll probably just stick with my tap water and the little packet. Â
