Political talking heads ad politicians to a lesser degree are masters at padding their language with non speak, words and phrases that could be left out. They will shamelessly pile on a new word or phrase fast as football players cover a loose ball. In writing it's called "padding" and it's what your English teacher used to put a red line through. In speaking we use lots of padding, it's part of speech, in news reports a new word, needed appropriate or not, sometimes spreads like wildfire. It doesn't stop with news of course and isn't exclusive with news, the over use or misuse is just more pronounced. When was the last time someone "bled to death" for example? They don't, they "bleed out".
Spoken language is the most common birthplace for new words, for the good, changing times require new words. Writers too can and have added great new words to the our ever changing vocabulary.
Here are some non words or new words for older words with the same exact meanings I could do with hearing a bit less from the media. Some are of course real words used in a new and generally useless context. Please add if you have any.
