From the washington post. amazon is sending it to me free daily in hopes i subscribe:

Yahoo on Thursday reported the largest data breach in history — affecting at least 500 million user accounts — months after first detecting signs of an intrusion that the company blamed on "state-sponsored" hackers.

The Web giant called on customers to change their passwords and institute other protective measures, but the largest fallout could be for Yahoo itself. The long-faltering company this summer agreed to sell its core business for $4.8 billion to telecommunications giant Verizon in a deal now clouded by news of the massive breach. Verizon said it learned of the incident only "within the last two days."

(Aside: This has happened before with yahoo. They were infamous for somehow allowing spammers to send out Spam mail to all ur contacts. A few years ago, yahoo sent out ED spam mail to all my former law clients. So, I stopped using them at that time.)

Don't freak. Just change ur password.
Thanks Charon
Thank u linville whom brought this to our attention yesterday.

Linville felt I needed to inform all members in the open forums.

~Please change ur password if you use Yahoo~
Thanks for the heads up! As convenient as it is to use one password for multiple accounts (I know I've done it lol), I highly recommend diversifying your password for things where people could get access to your personal information.

My parents just had their information compromised a few months ago and still have no idea, someone basically opened a bunch of credit cards in their name (which were sent to their house, so they were able to freeze their credit and no actual charges were made).

I wouldn't be surprised if theirs was compromised through one of the Target/retail breaches.
Oh btodd, be so careful with that.  At my last forum,  the olde ioplist.com, the rat bastard admin, Evil Tester, began to read everyone's PMs and emails.

I don't know, but he must have had access to people's passwords.  And, he assumed that people would use the same password at several forums.

So, as he became more paranoid on Vogue's drugs, Evil tester would go to other forums.  Log in with the user name that was used at ioplist.com.  And the same password.  At other forums.  He told me he was doing this.

he actually banned people for their posts at other forums.

I warned ET that I could not be a party to that sort of fol de rol.  That when I tell everyone he reads PMs, emails of members, and further, uses their passwords to hack into other forums, that he would be ruined.  That is disgusting. it was not long before he banned me and 50-100 senior members.

Which is how and why we started this third IOPLISt.org.

Let me just assure u all that I don't have access to your passwords.  And, I am not the type to breach confidences of people.

When I did have monies, I put fraud alerts on all my ccs.  That also meant that no way could they send me cc offers via the mail.  Your parents can do this now.  Fraud alert.

There is a service called Lifelock that allegedly protects your identity for just such a situation as this.  However, I remember that to prove their point that no one could hack them, Lifelock used to put their real social security number as advertising on the side of their truck.  On their commercials.  And, guess what?  They got hacked. So, if ur parents are concerned, they can check out Lifelock.  I imagine the firm learned quite a lot from being hacked themselves.

It is disgusting how easy it is to hack another.  I blame a great deal on microsoft, whom, allows one to gain remote access to another computer just by knowing their email address.  Bill Gates and his Access Anywhere nonsense is responsible for so much of this.  Most of the people are not accessing their own home networks.  They are accessing ours.

Good luck.  To call the three credit bureaus, and put a Fraud alert on ur parents accounts is free.  It used to last for seven years.  And, again, no credit card offers can therefore come thru the mail.

Be careful out there.  I hate to say it, but assume the worst is possible.  Oh, and doctors offices were infamous for putting medical records, with social security numbers on them, in waste bins that anyone could dig into.

Lastly, I read that sites such as ancestory.com are heaven for hackers.  Cuz people put up the info a hacker needs.  Social Security numbers, dates of birth, Mother's maiden name et al.

Good luck.
All this is scary. I just changed my PW on Yahoo. Let me also add, that this forum and it's Admins & moderators have been nothing but helpful and full of integrity. I am new to this sort of thing so, I don't have anything to compare it to such as the horror stories I am hearing, but I am grateful for what we have and hope that we can keep it friendly and helpful as it is now. A huge amount of credit goes out to Char, Ice, AOS, and the Pioneers Members for what we have. THANKS!!!
we all thank you. we are family. I pray we shall stay as family. The kind of family one wants to be part of. LOL.

This IS the best forum, hands down.

Ya know Char, as much as I hated the things ET did, I should thank him for one thing. Because of the craziness towards the end of the old List and my posting how pizzed I was because he banned you and a lot of our members that are now here, he directed me to this forum to try and prove he was right about you running a new forum. If he hadn't told me about this, I might not have been able to get back to my family. I am very thankful he sent me here. I was afraid I'd never find my friends again.

Of all the members there, I have no clue why he chose to tell ME about it, but so glad he did.

So, THANK YOU ET. Now fu*k off. I'M HOME! We are family again and don't need the Evil Twit Big Grin

i remember that now. he was using Vogue meds. Lunatic central.

And, as i saw fireplaces point out somewhere, defending me, when one starts a new forum, it is so not appropriate to email all ur contacts and tell them to join. how gauche.

i relied on the 25 people i did invite, to tell others.

we would not be the same without our Bug. So, hail ET! I would have been thoroughly insane had i tried to work beside that nutjob for one more minute.

We are family.
Thanks for posting this information Charon. I have a Yahoo email account that I use on a limited basis. Here is what Yahoo has posted on my email login page:

"Account Security Issue FAQs"
"We have confirmed, based on a recent investigation, that a copy of certain user account information was stolen from our network in late 2014 by what we believe is a state-sponsored actor. The account information may have included names, email addresses, telephone numbers, dates of birth, hashed passwords (the vast majority with bcrypt) and, in some cases, encrypted or unencrypted security questions and answers.  The ongoing investigation suggests that stolen information did not include unprotected passwords, payment card data, or bank account information; payment card data and bank account information are not stored in the system that the investigation has found to be affected."

What the... who the... hell is a "state-sponsored actor"??? Does that mean the alphabet boys??? The Russians??? And where do the hundreds of emails in my spam folder written in Arabic come from???

Anyway, I changed my password and I think that is about all I can do. I would guess that, if Verizon closes the deal on Yahoo, that the email service won't be available for free much longer. I will probably wind up dropping this account and moving to gmail.
