So I trusted him and during the next 5 years I was put on 8 different anti depressants and pushed away everyone and everything from my life. The whole time I was on them I kept telling him I need proper anxiety meds cause I`m pushing all of my friends away but his reply was "no dr will put you on benzos you just have to keep trying different anti depressants until one works" TO this day I blame that doctor for stuffing up my life. Just for anyone thinking that he did the right thing I saw him 2 days after my mom died and he put me on Effexor another anti depressant, so I had to go to my own mothers funeral 2 days into taking Effexor it was absolute hell. So yeh I hate most GPs
Anyway to answer the question i started seeing a psychiatrist 3 years ago and he basically prescribes any medication I want.
I find temazepam or nitrazepam works the best for my anxiety. Also some may laugh but oxycodone also works very well for anxiety and panic attacks.
But all those 3 medications are no good for long term use although I have been using them everyday for the past 2.5 years. not good
Everyone reacts different to medications for example diazepam(valium) has never worked at all for me.
Why these idiot Quacks can't seem to differentiate between chronic anxiety and depression is totally beyond me. I'm in the same boat with you catalyst although I do not, and will not, take anti-depressants. I experience periodic intense anxiety attacks ao have a condition which results in essential tremor type shaking of my hands under stress. These conditions have been the bane of my adult life.
Most SSRI's list anxiety as a side effect in their advertisements. So why, for the love of God, are you being prescribed a med which has anxiety listed amongst the known side effects? Well, I will tell you why: 1.) Prescribing this type of medication returns big $$$ to the drug companies and, 2.) Most of us have "Physician Assistants" as our Primary Care Physicians. There are some really good PA's out there, and many are really good people trying to do the best they can for you. That said, the fact remains that they are not actual Doctors and that they are on the 2nd or 3rd line as PA's either because they could not afford to become Doctors, or they were not smart enough to make the grade.
The whole system pisses me off and that is why I have taken some aspects of my healthcare into my own hands.
(I timed-out on my reply, this is my full reply to catalyst)

Good post catalyst and I wish you the best of luck in your treatment.
