What Are the Long-Term Effects of Gabapentin?

Gabapentin is a prescription drug, often found under the brand name Neurontin or Horizant, which is used to treat epilepsy and sometimes prescribed off-label for other conditions.

This medication can sometimes treat restless leg syndrome as well as numbness or tingling associated with diabetes. It may also be used to prevent hot flashes from hormonal changes and relieve neuropathic pain caused by shingles. This medication was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1993, and the FDA approved the generic version in 2003.

While gabapentin has been a breakthrough treatment for many, it has also become a substance of abuse. Reports suggest that the drug can cause a euphoric high when taken at larger doses than prescribed, and a 2014 study found that as many as a quarter of people in substance abuse treatment had abused gabapentin. This potent drug is dangerous, as it can cause severe side effects and intense withdrawal symptoms.

Treating Chronic Side Effects Associated with Gabapentin

People who have taken gabapentin, especially for conditions not involving neuropathy, report pain in their muscles, joints, or nerves. Frequent headaches, feeling mentally “foggy,” and having a tough time concentrating are also reported often. It takes a long time for many of these symptoms to clear up, even if the person took a prescription dose. It is hard to know when the side effects will wear off. There are some medications being tested to see if long-term health consequences of abusing gabapentin can be reversed, but there are not yet specific treatments.

It is important to get medical help to detox safely from gabapentin, followed by a comprehensive rehabilitation program that can help individuals change compulsive behaviors around prescription drugs. A medical professional can help individuals to manage any chronic side effects, like pain, seizures, or induced mental illnesses.

Myself, I refuse to use this wonder drug... Too many bad things and too few good reasons to take a chance....

Since all of this mess in the world of what we do, the thing that seems to work for me is now a z med not zOlp3dum but the other that seems to be more available. I get really tired and then have 200mg of g6b6pentin that gets me to sleep. I don't know what my brain is getting set up for, but it's the closest to what was done before. Only way to sleep. I work nights get home at 5am, then sleep 6 hours tops, lots happening in my world. So this is the best I can come up with at the moment. Everything was going perfect before ,I was happy, smooth sailing and now I'm reconstructing my chemistry to find a normal. I don't know, first thing going will be the g6b6pentin when I try to ease back into a routine without coming here soon. Thats all my news. Sleep has been very strange the last few months. All over the place, mood has been shaken and trying to stay positive. Do the best we can. All I want to do is SLEEP sheesh really all I want to do is to be able to go to bed after a long night and and at my work its very very loud and sensory overload. So good sleeping habits are hard when everyone else wakes up in 2 hours when I get home. Frustrating , but will figure a way. Hope you all are good. To stay on topic, I've heard it works well till it decides to not work, then you are up in the high mg's and w/d is something very real, so read up on that, if you decide to go that route.

I have no clue why I quoted my same reply in the same message? I was trying to correct some grammar and must have put reply? Sorry, if you need to edit it down, my fault.
Hoping my source for this comes back.. as i'm in need!! Smile
No word from my source. Sad
I am somewhat shocked to read this information about gab.  My husband takes it for diabetic nerve pain, but his doctor never mentioned any of the information I found here (of course!).  Perhaps he is at a low dose.  Since he hasn't been told to cutback, no withdrawal symptoms were ever discussed, and I am glad to have read this information in case he needs to decrease (or increase) it.  I was prescribed it also for a different condition, but it had no effect on me.
Defiantly not something to withdraw without Dr advice.

Gaba seems to be scripted more and more- a few years ago never heard of it.

<< now I know of three people who are on it >>

-  may be getting to the over prescribed territory.
