Hey everyone,


I have seen studies that say that nearly 40% of Americans nap on a daily basis. I have never really been able to enjoy napping because when I awake from one I always feel extra depressed. Kind of like how I feel when I wake up in the morning. Napping seems to take away all my forward motion and steam and puts me back down at the bottom of the hill. I know that it's not like this for everyone. Most people enjoy a good nap and wake up as happy as they were before their nap. Do you nap? Would have been your experiences? Thanks, everybody.

I've also kind wondered the same thing!  Sometimes after a nap I wake up not even sure what year.  I guess it is a common thing though to nap and feel refreshed since some countries practice a "siesta" during the work day to increase productivity.  Maybe it also depends on how you sleep at night too.  If you slept poorly the night before, you probably will feel pretty groggy after getting a couple hours of sleep midday because you'll want to keep on napping and not get back to work.  I have a hard time napping and feeling refreshed after because even if I wasn't doing anything productive before, I feel like I just wasted a bunch of time (and in reality I probably would have wasted my time on something else whether I was napping or not).

I have tried shorter naps, but once I get going on one, I just can't seem to keep it short. It's probably the need for escape, but it feels so much better being asleep than being awake and having to face the day. Many decades ago, before I started suffering from depression, I could handle any length nap and come out of it feeling pretty good. But current day napping hits some kind of reset button for me and sets me back to my morning setting. I build up confidence as the day goes on and the nap seems to take that away from me. I wish I could nap. I lay there, attempt to nap, but then I feel the pressure to nap, and it gives me anxiety and then I give up. I've never been able to nap. If anyone with really high anxiety has found a way to nap, definitely tell me your magic trick.

Often I listen to music (one specific album) with head phones, lying on my back on bed.  Sometimes I use an eye pillow as well to make it dark.  Set the alarm if necessary.  Usually give myself 2 hours.  Maybe do this weekly or monthly?  Go in spurts it seems.

Do you feel just as happy when you wake up from a nap? Or maybe even happier, as some people have told me that they feel? I am glad that you can make naps work for you, even if you just use them once in a while. You gotta know that I am curious as to what that one album is, lol.  Have a good night.  RM
I love naps. They make me feel refreshed. Sometimes if I sleep too long I am groggy for a bit so I try to keep them semi-short.
That's my problem. I don't fall asleep for just 30 minutes, it's like I wake up 3 hours later lol. And then I have that groggy feeling which is worse than I felt before the nap. I'm a nap failure, haha.

I feel calmer after napping; happy might be a stretch.  Often I nap because my neck is acting up so I will take a pk and then rest, listening to music.  By the end of the album, usually the pain is better.  Resting for that hour or two also gives my neck a break which I think helps.  

Napping/resting also helps if I am feeling agitated or nervous about something.  Keeps me from snacking which I don't need to do.

Thanks, Fire. Sorry that I didn't respond sooner. Under the weather the past few days and didn't come on. I was thinking about Annie Lennox and I pretty much like everything that I have ever heard her sing. I saw her at a now-defunct club in NYC back in the 80's. Her and Dave Stewart were doing some gigs separately back then, so she was performing with a couple of local back-up players. I was so impressed with the power and range of her voice. She always conveys so much emotion. I went on YT and checked some live performances from "Bare" that were from 2003 and she is everything that I remembered. Her voice is so expressive and even haunting. It really gets into your head. I am happy for you with everything you said about your experiences with napping. To get both some physical and emotional relief must be great. I think that most people are like you and that is why napping remains so popular.
