Hello All!  I am opening this thread because I am extremely ill right now with the FLU.  No I did not get a shot.  In the past I have had reactions to them.

But I spend a good bit of time in Doctor Offices and seem to have picked this bug up.

I am asking for any/all advice to combat this illness so I can at least maybe eat and move more than from the bed to the couch.

I called my Dr. last Wednesday and the nurse called me back telling me there was no reason to come in, they could not help me and I was to use over the counter meds.  So I have tried some of these meds and am getting no relief.

Any ideas/suggestions will be appreciated!!

Thanks,
Slick
Gosh Slick , I'm so sorry that you got the dreaded flu.  I got the shot but I'm scared to death to catch the flu.  I try & stay away from people as much as possible but I do have doctor visits coming up.  I have COPD & my doc said the flu could put me in the hospital.

Have you tried the original Nyquil?  That seems to be helpful for cold symptoms plus it puts me to sleep. Try & sleep your way through this sickness.  Other than that , I'm sorry I can't think of anything else. Maybe somebody else has some ideas......

Hang on Slick , I really hope you feel better soon Sad Heart Sad .
Slick,
I know this sounds corny but try some good old chicken broth. It may help. So far I have been lucky, but I have to start traveling in 2 weeks and have been worried about getting in it on the planes and airports. And
considering I am still not a hundred % from my knee. But I have no other options.

Roses is the original NyQuil good? Or better than others out there.

OR
Hello OR.  Good to see you.  The original cherry Nyquil worked better than the new varieties or generics in my opinion.

Popsicles also work nicely to help bring a temp down & soothe the throat in addition to your suggestion of chicken soup.

Fingers crossed we don't get it.  I'm hoping Slick is feeling a bit better..... Heart Sad
Hi you guys! Thanks!! I really hope you don't get this crap.
I have high blood pressure so the pharmacist turned me onto Coracedine HP - basically Nyquil but for high blood pressure.
Roses - got some popsicles but this Crap comes with the chills so I have only had a few.
OR - take all the precautions you can!!! I can't stand chicken soup from the can but I got lucky and a g/f dropped off
some broth she had made and had in her freezer. I have been sipping that.
I am sooo ready for this to go away! I sleep whenever I can but late night TV is terrible.
Thanks again!!! And I really hope no one else gets this! It is really bad.

Hugs!!
Slick
Unfortunately with proper 'flu (as opposed to a bad cold), there isn't a huge amount you can do other than trying to stay comfortable. Paracetamol aka acetaminophen, will help with a fever. Obviously don't exceed the max dose as it is hard on the liver. Ibuprofen can be a good alternative - it is harder on the stomach, but not so much on the liver. Either way they both reduce the fever and help with the aches you get from classic flu.

Make sure you stay hydrated. That's one practical thing that really helps your body. Normal water is fine. If someone is vomiting a lot then you might add a tiny amount of salt and sugar to the water or use a sports drink.

If you feel nausea then ginger does a surprisingly good job of settling the stomach. If you can eat then small meals of things that are easy to digest. Soup, as others have noted, is a good one.

I hope you feel better soon. It's a while since I've had flu - I get flu shots every year and use alcohol hand gel - but it is really nasty.

All the best,
barq
Thanks barq.  I have got  it bad.  HAD to go to the grocery store today and what should have been a 20 minute trip took an hour.  Got home and I was SO cold, I changed right away into pj's, heavy socks, slippers and a robe.  Turned the fire place on and basically passed out on the sofa.
I had some broth tonight and I picked up some jello and had warm jello water. (My mom always gave it to us as kids when we would get sick?? !).
Keep the had sanitizer with you EVERYONE!!
Stay well!!!

Hugs
Slick

And no - not tired at 1205 AM because of nap earlier.  TV - Lord!!!!
Hi Slick,

I had the flu earlier in January. I basically just used OTC medicine and drank lots of water. And like Roses, I tried to sleep whenever I could.

I’m sorry you have this bug and wish you a speedy recovery.

You have my 100% sympathy... having to go out when you are really unwell is awful. I live alone so keep a certain amount of tinned soup, and regular over the counter medicines that I hope would have what I needed for a typical 'flu situation. I'm sure there'd be something I'd leave out, and then be forced to venture out!

I'm sorry it sounds like such an awful expedition. I can really relate to the bit you mentioned about it taking so much longer than normal and where you said about getting so cold.

I guess jello water would hydrate you and give you sugar. I'd never thought of that before. (In the UK "jello" is called "jelly", and what Americans call "jelly" is called "jam".)

Take care friend,
barq
Thanks barq!
I live alone also and I keep canned soups etc. on hand but I had no choice but to get some more OTC meds and just a few other things to last me.  Calling for snow/cold this weekend and I knew I would never go out in that so  - no choice.  But now I haven't been out of my pj's since I got back from that trip and probably won't be over the weekend!  Unless I start to feel better enough to move around the house!
Poor cat just sits and looks at me when it is time for her treats!!  Rolleyes

Take care and best of luck with your upcoming travel!!
