Trophy hunter who targeted elephants and lions gets eaten by crocodiles

AUG 17, 2021

All animal lovers are opposed to trophy hunting. It can be hard to believe that there are people who enjoy killing at-risk animals like lions and rhinos.

This “sport” has pushed many species to the brink of extinction, but despite controversy and pushback from conservation groups this kind of hunting remains legal in many places.

But sometimes the animal kingdom has its own sense of justice… and one hunter came to a demise that could be described as “karma.”

Scott Van Zyl was a prolific trophy hunter from South Africa. In addition to being a hunter himself, Van Zyl operated a “safari” company where he would take clients on big game hunts as well.

His targets included lions, cheetahs, giraffes and elephants.

In 2017, Van Zyl headed out on one of his hunting trip in Zimbabwe… only this time, he didn’t return.

According to the BBC, the hunter headed out with a pack of dogs and a local tracker. He went off on his own in search of crocodiles, and was believed to be missing when his tracker dogs returned without him.

They found his footprints and bag near the river bank. Local authorities investigated the crocodiles… and found human remains that a DNA test confirmed belonged to Van Zyl.

After the story broke, many people wrote that he had it coming: that it was karma for killing so many animals.

One Green Planet, while not celebrating the hunter’s death, said the case is just more proof of why we shouldn’t allow trophy hunting: it puts the hunters’ lives at needless risk.

“Let’s be honest, Zyl shouldn’t have been hunting in the first place,” they wrote. “We have to ask ourselves if the ‘thrill of the hunt’ is really worth risking your own life – while deliberately taking others.”

What do you think of this story? Did this hunter deserve what happened to him? Share this story with your thoughts!

I love hunting,
However, I eat what I shoot and don't waste any ...
Trophy hunting should be outlawed ...

I am vegan. But I understand people hunt. What bothers me was the trophy hunters right before covid hit. a place trained big cats and prey to trust humans. and then would send them out and the "hunter" could shoot a mild mannered peaceable animal to get the trophy and lie to everyone.

But many do hunt and many have to hunt.

Ok I don't wanna start debates over hunting. One of the few shows I watch are Fish and Game wildlife shows. Those men have the power in RI, Texas, and New Hampshire that i get to see here. I know the people need to hunt for food. I don't judge them.

But after reading that this entire corporation was set up to train baby cats to trust humans. all manner of "wild animal." and on the day you paid, they release the chosen animal and the "hunter" just shoots him as the animal runs up to make friends. As he was raised to do.

No idea why it showed up now in my news feed. I do know that large portions of internet and phones were shut down in NY and other states nearby. We heard rumors as to the why. But it was an old article, probably back from when the story broke about tame big cats strolling out to meet a human and kabam.

Just sayin cuz I am not saying all hunting is perverse. It is in the Bible. Part of many lives. Just not mine. I was closer with animals when young cuz everyone human wanted something from me.
I enjoy watching the Animal Planet channel.  It includes programs of zoos in England, the New York/Bronx Zoos and San Diego zoos.
They exist for not only the enjoyment of visitors but are heavily invested with other zoos in the US and abroad to
keep the animals healthy and breed them correctly to assure animals like the Black Rhino, and a bunch of others
are not lost forever from this earth.

These animals are facing many obstacles:  climate change, encroaching of people into the areas they live and of course, the disgusting humans that feel so proud to have STUFFED animals and heads mounted in their homes.

I am sorry if I am offending anyone, but I just find it simply disgusting and sad when I see these "trophy animals"!!!
And it is a damn shame when the animals are raised only to be killed and shown off with a big picture of the BRAVE
COWARDS!!!

I understand people hunting to feed the family.  No Problem!!  But the prices some people pay to get these trophy animals is a sin.

I say GO FOR IT KARMA!!!!!!!!!!!!

Slick

AND just a P.S. - I am not really sorry if I am offending Big Game Hunters!!  I have a friend or 2 that has some
Trophy's and I HAVE offended them!!!!
No offense here ...

I (and my kin) have hunted ever since I ever knew ...

I got my first 22 cal at 7 yo ...
Shotguns were everywhere double barrel semi-auto, 30/30 , 308, .303 enfield
(I am in Texas after all)

G-Paw always told me,
"Boy, the more different things you'll eat, the less of a chance you'll go hungry!"
(raised during the depression)

So if it walked, swam, crawled on the ground, up a tree, flew or congregated
in beds, schools or catch em in a net yes... Even coons Big Grin ... I probably like it ..
We never ate the deer heads, never wasted them,,,
We hung them on the wall..

But as far as just shootin something just to kill it ..Not at all ,
unless it's a predator and after the stock,
but that had a purpose ..

Did I mention those hogs?!? Javelina and they crossed with large "domestic" pigs
(Berkshire, Hampshire and the like) when they get out of the pen and run with
those wild ones, it takes only weeks or less to revert to wild... And believe you me,
they can destroy some acres ...

But sport killin ain't in my blood ...

I use to hunt, but I always felt bad when I took the life of an animal even though I always ate the meat. I fish, but I always catch and release. Now I feed the deer and I enjoy watching the photos/videos from my game camera. In my opinion, trophy hunting and game farms should be outlawed.
"Local authorities investigated the crocodiles… and found human remains that a DNA test confirmed belonged to Van Zyl."

The way they worded this makes it sound as if the crocs were detained and questioned. Guess it's better than saying "Shot in the head and gutted"
