Ronnie Spector, Ronettes singing sensation and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, dead at 78

Ronnie Spector, the Spanish Harlem native famous for 1960s hits including “Be My Baby” and “Walking in the Rain” died Wednesday from cancer, her family said. She was 78.
Spector enjoyed the highs of chart-topping success and a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and dealt with the lows of an abusive marriage to record producer Phil Spector.

The Ronettes singer, born Veronica Bennett, was a key member of the trio that helped define an era and toured with the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.
“Ronnie lived her life with a twinkle in her eye, a spunky attitude, a wicked sense of humor and a smile on her face,” her family said in a statement. “She was filled with love and gratitude.”

She formed that band with her sister Estelle Bennett and cousin Nedra Talley in the late 1950s. The three were known not only for their powerful voices, but their striking looks, including tight skirts and modern hairstyles, added to the group’s appeal.
“We weren’t afraid to be hot,” Spector said in her memoir.

In 1963, the Ronettes teamed up with Phil Spector, whom the singer married in 1968. They divorced in 1974 after what she described as an abusive marriage. He died in prison in on Jan. 16, 2020, where he was serving time for the killing of actress Lana Clarkson.
Spector remembered her ex as “a brilliant producer, but a lousy husband.”

The Ronettes split-up in 1967, though Spector continued to record with artists including Keith Richards, Eddie Money, Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen.
She released her first album in 20 years in 2006 called “Last of the Rock Stars,” which was followed in 2010 by a popular collection of Christmas songs. In 2016, Spector recorded an ode to the British bands of the ‘60s.

“I just heard the news about Ronnie Spector and I don’t know what to say,” Beach Boys genius Brian Wilson tweeted. “I loved her voice so much and she was a very special person and a dear friend. This just breaks my heart. Ronnie’s music and spirit will live forever.”
She is survived by her husband of nearly 40 years Jonathan Greenfield. They had two sons.
