A suspect has been arrested and charged in the 1996 fatal shooting of rapper Tupac Shakur.
Las Vegas police apprehended former Crip gang member Duane “Keffe D” Davis on Friday while he was taking a morning walk, according to The Associated Press. He has since been charged with murder with the use of a deadly weapon.

In court on Friday, Chief Deputy District Attorney Marc DiGiacomo called Davis the “on-ground, on-site commander” who “ordered the death” of Shakur.
Davis, 60, claims to be the uncle of gangster Orlando Anderson, who is rumored to have fired several shots from the backseat of a white Cadillac and into Shakur’s chest following a skirmish at a Mike Tyson boxing match on Sept. 7, 1996 in Vegas. Shakur died less than a week later in a Nevada hospital.

Death Row Records executive Marion “Suge” Knight was also injured when bullets poured into the black BMW he was driving with Shakur in the passenger seat.
“Mr. Davis formulated a plan to exact revenge upon Mr. Knight and Mr. Shakur,” DiGiacomo charged.
Davis claimed in his 2019 memoir, “Compton Street Legend,” that he was sitting in the front seat of the vehicle that pulled up to Shakur’s at a stoplight on the Vegas Strip. He said he slipped a firearm into the Cadillac’s backseat where Anderson was sitting, implicating his nephew in firing off the shots that killed the 25-year-old “Hit Em Up” rapper.
Though an affidavit was filed naming Anderson as a suspect, Shakur’s known-rival maintained his innocence and was never charged. He too was killed in a gang-related shooting in 1998.

Investigators searched a Sin City-area home belonging to Davis’ wife in July. Cops reportedly collected computers, a cellphone, .40-caliber bullets, photos and a copy of Davis’ memoir.
Retired L.A. police detective Greg Kading told The Associated Press that Davis’ tell-all tome likely reignited the murder case he had worked on for years.
“Prior to Keffe D’s public declarations, the cases were unprosecutable as they stood,” Kading said.
A Nevada grand jury finally indicted Davis after “several months” of examination, prosecutors said Friday. A district judge denied him bail.
Following Friday’s charges, Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill said police never gave up on the highly publicized murder of the Harlem-born, Grammy Award nominee.
“While I know there’s been many people who did not believe that the murder of Tupac Shakur was important to this police department, I’m here to tell you that is simply not the case,” he told reporters.
Shakur is remembered as one of the greatest lyricists of his generation. His fifth studio album, “The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory,” was released posthumously on Nov. 5, 1996 and immediately topped the Billboard 200 chart on its way to reaching platinum status.
He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2017, with a speech given by Snoop Dogg at Barclays Center.
“While many remember him now as some kind of thugged-out superhero, Tupac knew he was only human,” the rapper said. “And he represented that through his music like no one before.”
