RE: Effective sleeping pills - Peony13 - 09-11-2019

I've had no luck with trazadone, melatonin, and Rozeram (a prescription drug that works like melatonin, but stronger.) Benzos get me maybe two-three hours asleep, then I'm wide-awake again. I was prescribed gabapentin for bad pain (central pain) but a standard dose left me out cold for 48 hours (other than occasionally staggering to the bathroom as the room spun and I saw double.) Small doses of gabapentin don't have much effect on me -- the problem is, gabapentin takes *way* too long to wear off on me, possibility because of my severe liver disease. So, it either does nothing of keeps me flat out for days.

Zolpidem (Ambien) is the only thing that works for me. I have been trying and trying to see a psychiatrist so I can get an RX for it. Psychiatrists always agree that I really should be on Ambien, but getting in to see one in my area seems near-impossible. I do have some Zopiclone on hand right now, but it just doesn't work as well for me as Ambien. Last night, I took Zopiclone and went to sleep, but woke up less than three hours later.

I am pretty desperate to find something to help me get to sleep. I have always had trouble with sleep but my mother died very suddenly a month ago and she and I were close. I have been so depressed that sleep is impossible.
I went to a doctor and asked for 10 pills of Ambien and he said no. I have never asked my doctor for any controlled pill so I was shocked. I just wanted something to help me get over the worst part. But I miss her so much

The first one is a natural hormone encouraging the brain to follow your instruction to produce melatonin every 24h after you take a dose. Perfect for jetlag by example or if you went occasionally out of you regular sleep time. Second is an synthetic hypnotic, and sleep pattern will not be natural. I am surprised to see here that some people feel dizzy the morning, when we know the half life is only about 3 hours. Probably they take more than 10mg. I can feel dizzi after a xanax (12 hours half life), but usually after a good coffe a 30 minutes it is ok. About tolerance, sure you can get it if you take it every night for many months.

therefore if you can go with melatonin, it is best (my oppinion). Also you can mix small dose of zolpidem with melatonin. You can rotate also. By example taking melatonin 7 days and zolpidem 7 days.

BUT you can also cure you insomnia. Starting with few days with melatonin at THE SAME HOUR. and going to bet at same time each days including week end. AND NOT TRING TO SLEEP. You are just relaxing in your bed and that is enough. Sleep will come when it will be the moment.

It is good that melatonin works for you, but it DOES NOT work for everyone, and certainly IS NOT a cure for insomnia. If zolpidem works for someone, then yes, use it.  Shaking things,up every few days so tolerance doesn't build is a good idea.   Going to bed at the same time is part of sleep hygiene and is also a good idea.  As someone who has dealt with insomnia for more than half my life, I take offense at someone telling me it can be cured by lying in my bed and relaxing after downing some non-effective melatonin.  It isn't that cut and dry for most of us.

My experience of melatonin is it worked great for sleep my first night taking it but it's definitely not a long term solution for me, however I do know a lot of people find it helpful.

Falling asleep is not an issue for me, though it once was. Staying asleep or very early awakening is a big problem. Almost every night, at 3 or 4 am I wake and feel somewhat anxious. Too often I'll reach for a benzo which usually puts me back to sleep until alarm clock time. Other option is to live with it but I'm usually setting myself up for a bad day with four hours sleep. Any suggestions?

All depends on your body chemistry and sleep habits. Honestly, the things you do before you go to bed greatly dictate how you will sleep. Phones away from bed, no computer for 30 min before all that I'm sure you have heard, but very effective. Calm room, no clutter, low light. Fan or sound machine and then of course meds at the end. If Zolpidem works for you, then the closest to that if you do not have that would be doxylamine succinate for over the counter. Benzo's seem to be too much for long term use.

Yes I would agree with that Valerian Root works wonders, they have plenty of herbal sleep medications at health food stores, passion flower "Passionflower for anxiety. In general, there is good evidence to suggest that P. incarnata helps relieve anxiety symptoms. Several clinical studies show that passionflower has anxiety-calming (anxiolytic) effects. ... A 2016 clinical trial found that passionflower decreased anxiety and improved memory in rats." (if you have time to read) is another that helps anxiety and is also helps with stress and anxiety, comes in Tincture forms you just drop some in water and sip on it.

Z0pi!cl0ne also helps if you are going down the benzo road.

I am the only one who have strong GERD with most sleep aid meds ? Zolpidem , Midazolam, all, give me bad GERD, even after days . This not happen to me with Alprazolam, but, of course , it not the best thing to use it as sleep aid.
Trazodone is great, but after a couple of weeks ( months ) , not longer works.

That is interesting to know cause i have been on benzos  for a few years and i have been getting really bad indigestion and acid reflux. You could try Nexium (Esomerprazole)  although it stopped working for me after about 2-3 months and then i just swapped back to zantac and those chewing ones like Rennie and Gaviscon. I have been on Alps now for about 1 week so it will be interesting to know if things change.  Killingstress- Do you take opiates at all as well?

RE: Effective sleeping pills - betterlife - 12-09-2019

I have found that Z0pi!cl0ne works, but IMO opinion it is not nearly as effective as apls. Still it helps. I had chronic insomnia with occasional anxiety attacks and a good quality alp puts me back on track.
