Some of the newspapers went nuts about that. But the referendum was never binding. I imagine that most MPs will vote in allignment with the outcome of the referendum. I'm sure a few europhiles will vote not to trigger article 50, but I doubt it will make any difference. What's odd is most MPs will be voting against their own beliefs in order to be democratic. I suppose their legislation might force the government to be a bit more specific about what it is doing. I really wish Brexit hadn't won because it will take years to unpick this mess. It has also become increasingly apparent that there is absolutely no plan for what to do. I've heard people saying that the economy is still fine which shows how we are ok on our own. But we haven't left the EU yet! When that becomes real, then the shit really hits the fan. I also don't understand why they are heading for a hard brexit. The referendum was won by a very slim margin - 52/48 is hardly a strong mandate. So why not adopt the middle path and do a soft Brexit? It really feels like a previously relatively sensible country has gone insane. The mob attack anyone who dares question Brexit. I thought those who wanted out of the EU because they think the UK is so great would be more respectful of the tradition of debate, discussion and freedom of speech. Aren't those British values? |
