RE: Netflix/Amazon Binge Worthy Shows - Muzicatty - 07-22-2017

Hi FirePlaces,

Thanks for the recommendations. Yes, I let The Americans slip right past me even though everyone told me it was so good. I have watched almost 5 seasons in about 12 days. That's the only good thing about insomnia.  Rolleyes

The Killing is excellent! I know a lot of people criticized it and preferred the Danish version, but I just loved Mireille Enos (The Catch) and Joel Kinnaman (House of Cards) in it. I was so happy when Netflix picked it up and did the prequel. I think it was cancelled by the network way too soon, but so are most of the shows I enjoy.

Did you ever see Borgen? It is also Danish, aired on PBS here, but I caught on too late and watched it online. It's about a female Danish Prime Minister's rise to power. Such a good show, and again, another one cancelled too soon.

Another show that I am excited about (and it premieres on Amazon Prime the 28th) is The Last Tycoon, with Kelsey Grammar, Matt Bomer and Lily Collins. Last summer Amazon tested the pilot along with another show and only picked up The Last Tycoon. It's about old Hollywood and studio execs who basically came from nothing, moved to Hollywood, re-invented themselves and became the heads of various studios. If you are into that sort of thing, I think it's going to be really good based on the pilot.

Friends from College and Love are both on my list to watch. Good to know you are enjoying them.

Also, if you haven't seen The Handmaid's Tale on Hulu I highly recommend it. It's so on point with what is going on in our country now. Elizabeth Moss, Joseph Fiennes and Yvonne Strahovski (Dexter) are in it.

Thanks so much for the suggestions. I really appreciate it! If you come across anything else, please keep me posted. It makes the nights go faster.  Smile

p.s., Since you like crime shows, have you seen Broadchurch? The first 2 seasons are the best, but it's another really good show. Oh, and another one on TNT right now that I like is Animal Kingdom. The Australian movie was the best, but I really like the U.S. TV version.

LOVE the Handmaid's Tale....but my SO and I just finished up the first season of Broadchurch....SOOO good. I can't wait until we can sit down and watch season 2. I think netflix only has the first two seasons.

Friends from college is cute too, I was always a fan of Key & Peele though.

I saw that Netflix was advertising this and did a read up on it, I like Jason Bateman...may be interesting. Not sure he can top Arrested Development for his characters though.

Yeah, I kind of fell into this show too..I ended up watching it all. Kind of a feel good show!

Yeah, I kind of fell into this show too..I ended up watching it all. Kind of a feel good show!

Parenthood the movie with a Steve Martin, Mary Steenburgen, Diane Weist and Keanu Reeves, or Parenthood the TV show with a Lauren Graham, Peter Krause, Monica Potter, Dax Shepard, Mae Whitman, Miles Heizer, Craig T. Nelson, etc...? I'm a little confused because you said it was on HBO now. My guess is that if it is the TV show, then you probably live in a different country., since they tend to air a lot of American TV shows on networks like HBO in other countries (I noticed this in Australia and the Philippines, too.  In the U.S. It was on NBC and is now on Netflix. Anyway, it was a great show and cancelled too soon in my opinion. Great writing and a great cast!

Also, I'm a little lost as to who is says what on this thread (it's like gmail on a computer runnning the e-mails together and trying to figure out the first and last comments in a string of e-mails, if that makes sense), but re: Jason Bateman, he is one of my favorite actors and will always be a Michael Bluth to me. Loved the show and think it was his best role ever. Ozark has me intrigued and it's on my list of shows to watch. If you watch it before I get to it, please let me know what you think. Thanks!

Also, counting the days to season 2 of The Handmaid's Tale, too.  Smile

ComeDayGoDay,

Ok, I think I get it now. The older e-mails were confusing me (remember, I don't sleep Blush ), but I think you were trying to answer my questions by showing other posts. Would that be right?

Anyway, I have seen all 3 seasons of Broadchurch and seasons 1 and 2 are the best. Season 3 has a great cast - actors that I had not seen in a long term time). I'm bummed that it was cancelled. David Tennant and Olivia Coleman are so good in it! Actually, the whole cast is excellent.

Oh, and Rectify was also one of my all time favorite shows. I hated that they ended it though. The last season all seemed to be a bit rushed. I think it was ne of the best written shows on TV and am sorry that it never really found it's audience.

RE: Netflix/Amazon Binge Worthy Shows - Muzicatty - 07-22-2017

Oh, by the way, did anyone catch a Big Little Lies on HBO with Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern, Zoe Kravitz and Alexander Skarsgard? It seems as though you either loved it or hated it and I happened to love it. Looking forward to a possible season 2.

Still love watching grey's anatomy. I used to make fun of my mother because it's so dramatic but it's addicting.

RE: Netflix/Amazon Binge Worthy Shows - Muzicatty - 07-23-2017

Yes, thanks to everyone for all for the recommendations. Should keep me busy for awhile. Also, strange coincidence, but on the way to the airport and at the airport were giant signs promoting Ozark with Jason Bateman. They are really pushing that show, so I have high expectations. Better be good.

Then, when I got to the airport, The Last Tycoon was being promoted continuously on the large monitors in the terminal. I think the initial order was only for 8 eps (Kind of of like Big Little Lies), so I don't know if they are just testing the waters with it to see how it goes over, or if they want it to qualify for an Emmy Nom in the Limited Series category, since a lot of people don't have Prime (I don't) and there is too much competition in the other categories. Or, maybe they just didn't want to spend the money on a full season. It worked for BLL, so who knows.

By the way, Fire Places, what do you think of a season 2 of BLL focusing on Zoe Kravitz's character? Gettng mixed opinions, but the writer and actresses are really on board. I don't think David E. Kelly is, so,...fingers crossed....

Gotta run. Time to board my flight. Have a good weekend everyone!

RE: Netflix/Amazon Binge Worthy Shows - Orange rabbit - 07-23-2017

This is a great thread. Thanks for starting it comedaygoday. First time I read the thread. So many great suggestions.

OR

I love Queen of the South. This is the second season and I got hooked in season 1. Not sure why, but the idea of a powerful women leading a drug cartel is so interesting.

And big little lies, loved that show. Some information about BLL lies a few may not know. Only 1 of those gorgeous homes was actually in Monterey, CA. All the others were homes in Los Angeles. 1 was a home in Malibu, ca. The coffee shop that Nichole, Reese and the others would meet to have coffee at is actually a Resturant on the Monterey wharf. Most of the scenes were also filmed in LA. Amazing how they made it look like everything was filmed in Monterey, CA. Even the school the kids went to wasn't in Monterey. They did do a lot of background filming in Monterey and used it in the series.

I really hope they do a second season.

Thank you Muzicatty, ComeDayGoDay, Annie, and Counterfeit for the show recommendations!  Always great to have a list of good shows to watch.

So bizarre how we have SO many choices now.  I bet all these streaming services original content programs really opened up the market for producers, directors, actors, script writers, etc...

Any else remember when there were only 4 channels/networks -- NBC, ABC, CBS, and PBS?

Fun thread!
Yes, I remember when we only had the 4 networks. There was never anything on and I remember my mom and/or grandmother always having Lawrence Welk on. Ugh! I was so happy when MTV (and cable) was launched. I think I was 10. I would stay up all night to watch all of the various music video shows: MTV, Night Tracks/Night Flight (?), Friday Night Videos, etc. I was so afraid I would miss something, even though they showed the same videos over and over again. I miss the old MTV. But, now I guess we have Vevo and You Tube and can watch what we want to watch whenever we want to. Still, it's not the same. Remember The Young Ones? British TV show featuring Adrian Edmondson (who is married to Jennifer Saunders, who I  am a huge fan of. I think I've seen every episode of AB Fab at least a dozen times), Rik Mayal, Nigel Planner and Christopher Ryan. Watching old episodes now makes me realize how corny the show was, but I loved it.

Oh, also remember when Fox first aired. I loved 21 Jump Street!

Hi Orange Rabbit,

Yep. A lot of it was filmed in Malibu and here is Madeline's house:

I had been wondering about Queen of the South. So, you like it? It did look good, but for some reason it was always in the back of my mind and I'd forget it was on. I'll have to add that yo my list, too.

Yes, I agree. This is a fun thread.

RE: Netflix/Amazon Binge Worthy Shows - Muzicatty - 07-23-2017

Ok, so here are a few more shows that I wondered what people thought about, the first 2 are both on Hulu. The Path, with Aaron Paul, Hugh Dancy and Michelle Monaghan, and Casual with Michaela Watkins, Alex Cole and Tara Lynne Barr. I really enjoyed Seasons 1 and 2 of Casual, but I'm losing interest this season.

I like anything Hugh Dancy is in, so that includes The Path. Aaron Paul is also really good in it, not Breaking Bad good, but good, and anytime I see Michelle Monaghan I think of the movie The Best of Me (Nicholas Sparks - ok, I'm just going to admit it, I like his books and movies, go ahead and give me a hard time about it because everyone else does),  I think James Marsden is great, but I also can't help thinking that the role was supposed to be Paul Walker's, and after his tragic death, Marsden stepped in. I don't think it would have been the right role for Walker. I can't imagine any chemistry between him and Monaghan, but who knows. He'll always be the guy from Fast and Furious to me.

Speaking about Breaking Bad, does anyone watch Better Call Saul? After putting it off and putting it off because I generally don't like prequels and knew it could never be as good as BB, I just recently started watching it in spite of everyone telling me how good it was. I watch it sporadically, but am still behind a season. Don't know why, but I just can't get into it.

What about Ray Donovan, one of my favorite shows, with a terrific cast? I think Liev Schneider is amazing! He was born to play Ray. My BF is at Comic Con this weekend and said he ran into Liev and his 2 sons. To top it off, he knows how much I have always adored Tom Cavanaugh and had to rub it in that he met him. He will always be "Ed" to me

Another one: Shameless. Love it! I know the Brits don't think it is anywhere near as good as the original version, but William H. Macy and Emmy Rossum lead a great cast and everyone on that show is terrific.

What do you think of the Will & Grace re-boot?

One last one, and I know it has been cancelled, but did anyone see Bloodline on Netflix? Ben Mendelsohn has deserved every award he has received for that role and I'll watch Kyle Chandler on anything. Another series cancelled over money and a dispute with Sony. Solid cast, but the last season was too rushed and too short. They tried to wrap up loose ends, but I think it could have been done differently.

Boy, I watch a lot of TV! Fun talking with all of you about it though and hearing about shows I haven't seen.

Hope you all are having/had a nice weekend!

Heart
M.
