National Pigs in a Blanket Day

Today is National Pigs-In-A-Blanket Day! This delicious finger food is popular with kids and cocktail party guests all across the world. In fact, there are many different cultures that have their own unique twist on this comfort food classic.
In the United Kingdom, pigs-in-a-blanket are small sausages wrapped in bacon. People traditionally serve them as Christmas dinner appetizers.
In Israel, kids enjoy Moshe Ba'Teiva (Moses in the Ark), which are miniature hot dogs rolled in a ketchup-covered puff pastry and baked in the oven.
In the United States, pigs-in-a-blanket are hot dogs or Vienna sausages wrapped in biscuit or croissant dough and baked until golden brown. Yum!

National DNA Day

National DNA Day is a holiday celebrated on April 25. It commemorates the day in 1953 when James Watson, Francis Crick, Maurice Wilkins, Rosalind Franklin and colleagues published papers in the journal Nature on the structure of DNA.
Furthermore, on that day in 2003 it was declared that the Human Genome Project was very close to complete, and "the remaining tiny gaps [we]re considered too costly to fill."
In the United States, DNA Day was first celebrated on April 25, 2003 by proclamation of both the Senate and the House of Representatives.
However, they only declared a one-time celebration, not an annual holiday.
Every year from 2003 onward,annual DNA Day celebrations have been organized by the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), starting as early as April 23 in 2010, April 15 in 2011 and April 20 in 2012.
April 25 has since been declared "International DNA Day" and "World DNA Day" by several groups.

National Richter Scale Day is observed annually on April 26th.This day honors the birth of the Richter Scale inventor, Charles F. Richter (April 26, 1900 – September 30, 1985).
Richter was an American seismologist and physicist most famous as the inventor of the Richter magnitude scale, which quantified the size of earthquakes.
While working at the California Institute of Technology, with Beno Gutenberg, Richter first used the scale in 1935. After the Richter Scale was published in 1935, it immediately became the standard measure of earthquake intensity.
Since 1935, there have been other magnitude scales developed. Depending on what data is available, different ones are used however most are not as popularly known as Richter Scale.
The United States Geological Service records show that the biggest earthquake since 1900, was in Chili in May 1960. Measuring 9.5 on the Richter Scale it is known as the Great Chilean Earthquake.

International Guide Dogs Day

Not only are dogs our loving pets, but they can also be heroes that make a difference in people’s lives every single day.
In honor of the guide dogs that have changed the lives of those with disabilities, April 29 is International Guide Dog Day. Guide dogs are dedicated to their work, and without them, many could not do simple daily activities that most people take for granted.
Their work has saved countless lives, and they serve a huge role in our communities.

National Secretary's Day was created in 1952 through the work of Harry F. Klemfuss of Young and Rubicam. Klemfuss recognized the importance and value of the position to a company or business.
His goal was to encourage more women to become secretaries. Using his skill and experience in public relations, Klemfuss, promoted the values and importance of the job of secretaries.
In doing so, he also created the holiday in recognition of the importance of secretaries.
The name of this special day has changed and evolved over the past few decades. But, the importance of recognizing these vital individuals remains.
The two new terms in use today are: "Administrative Professionals" and "Executive Admins". The two names sometimes mean different roles and responsibilities in different companies and organizations. Both are broader terms, that encompass more positions than the original "Secretary" role.
The name change recognizes and acknowledges that the role has changed significantly since 1952, and for the better at that.
In Harry Klemfuss' day, these positions were the realm of women. Today, you find males in these positions.

In November 2011, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officially designated April 30 as International Jazz Day in order to highlight jazz and its diplomatic role of uniting people in all corners of the globe.
International Jazz Day is chaired and led by Irina Bokova, UNESCO Director General, and legendary jazz pianist and composer Herbie Hancock, who serves as a UNESCO Ambassador for Intercultural Dialogue and Chairman of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. The Institute is the lead nonprofit organization charged with planning, promoting and producing this annual celebration.

Amphibian populations are faced with an array of environmental problems, including pollution, infectious diseases, habitat loss, invasive species, climate change, and over- harvesting for the pet and food trades. Unless we act quickly, amphibian species will continue to disappear, resulting in irreversible consequences to the planet’s ecosystems and to humans.
Frogs eat mosquitoes; provide us with medical advances; serve as food for birds, fish and monkeys; and their tadpoles filter our drinking water. Plus frogs look and sound cool, and kids love them -- so there are lots of reasons to save the frogs!

National Mother Goose Day

Mother Goose Day is observed on May 01, 2016. Mother Goose Day was founded in 1987 by Gloria T. Delamar in tandem with the publication of her book, "Mother Goose; From Nursery to Literature".
It is a day to appreciate nursery rhymes and stories. The familiar figure of Mother Goose is an imaginary author of a collection of fairy tales and nursery rhymes which are often published as Mother Goose Rhymes. As a character, she appears in one "nursery rhyme".
Mother Goose is generally depicted in literature and book illustration as an elderly country woman in a tall hat and shawl, a costume identical to the peasant costume worn in Wales in the early 20th century, but is sometimes depicted as a goose, usually wearing a bonnet.

“May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii Nei.”
This popular phrase in the islands prevents anyone from forgetting this special day. It was Don Blanding, a writer and poet, who first suggested that a holiday should be dedicated to the beautiful Hawaiian tradition of making and wearing lei.
But it was Grace Tower Warren, also a writer, who came up with the idea that the holiday should coincide with May Day. And so since the first Lei Day on May 1, 1928, Hawaii has continued the annual celebration to this very day.
Oahu hosts the state’s largest May Day event.
No matter what day of the week May 1 falls on, the Lei Day Celebration takes place at Queen Kapiolani Park in Waikiki. The event features live music, a lei contest exhibit, hula performances, demonstrations, craft and food vendors, and more.
This event is free and open to the public.
Each year, the Lei Queen and her court reside over the festivities. Lei Queen are selected based on their lei making skills, hula proficiency, and Hawaiian language fluency.
Expect to see the most beautiful lei in the world at the annual Lei Day lei competition held and displayed at the park. The lei are later taken and lovingly placed at Mauna ‘Ala, the Royal Mausoleum. Also expect excellent live music by some of Hawaii’s top performers.

Another tradition to stem from this holiday is the annual Cazimero Lei Day Concert. Iconic, contemporary Hawaiian musician, Robert Cazimero have been putting on this annual concert in the state to sold out crowds for over 30 years.
Performances rotate between the islands, so if you’re interested in attending, be sure to research ahead of your trip. For this year’s May Day, Robert Cazimero and his award winning hula dancers will be performing at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center.

National Baby Day

Smiley, squishy, faces are perfect reasons to put Baby Day on the map.
Although it’s difficult to pinpoint why, or where this day originated, we can easily speculate! Anyone who has ever yearned for, had, or known a baby, could list dozens of reasons why babies are special.
Babies are not just cute, but they are innocent in a way that helps you to see goodness in the world. They give you hope, happiness, and make you strive to become a better person.
What more could you ask for?
Mark Baby Day in your calendar, and use it to cherish the baby you have, or plan for the baby you want. If you aren’t planning on making babies any time soon, or your ‘baby’ is walking around in 6 inch heels, or sporting a 5 o’clock shadow, take this day to celebrate with a niece, nephew, or grandchild. Show them how blessed you feel to have them in your life, and have a fantastic day.
Alternatively, if there are no babies in your family, why not make a gift basket for a new mother in your neighbourhood, or graciously donate to a baby related charity?

World Asthma Day

HISTORY AND ORIGINS
Although there is no documented official history or origin of Paranormal Day, the term itself—paranormal—has been in the English language at least since 1920. It is believed that the term was coined somewhere between 1915 and 1920 to classify experiences that were outside the realm of normal scientific explanation.
The word itself comes from “para” meaning above and normal meaning standard. So essentially it refers to something above or beyond ordinary experience. It’s quite possible that the word paranormal came into vogue thanks to the efforts of Charles Fort.
He was an American writer and researcher that published a great deal of work related to unexplained phenomena during the 1920’s and 1930’s. He is collected thousands of paranormal anecdotes and is often considered the father of modern paranormalism.
Fort investigated a variety of reports including stories of poltergeists, mysterious levitations, spontaneous fires, crop circles and UFO’s just to name a few. He paved the way for today’s modern paranormal investigators.
