Children being prescribed anti-depressants - G.Elias - 07-24-2018 Tens of thousands of children prescribed 'potentially harmful' antidepressants, what damage may this lead to?They can be bad enough for adults, time to think again about giving this medication out so easily to everybody, not just children. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/children-antidepressants-prosac-school-age-drugs-pills-brain-doctors-a8458236.html RE: Children being prescribed anti-depressants - Charon - 07-24-2018 just read the warnings in the Physicians Desk Reference. Or listen to a commercial on the telly. The anti depressant can cuz people, esp our youth, to become suicidal. Oh that is helpful. And, if they worked, why in god's name must one take abilify with an AD to make it work? Because big pharma has more and more hands held out for gold to grease their palms. At the cost of our children. And adults. Many whom never expressed a suicidal feeling in their lives, do kill themselves on an AD. My sister has a few in her church whom did. omg. It started with the catholic nuns taking the children whom were dyslexic or had a reading disorder or a bad homelife, being locked in the closets that held the coats. This was super prevalent in the fifties and sixties. I guess moms went on valium at the time, and believing doctors to be God, were willing to put their children on meds that they are too young for. And can cause a lifetime of problems. The dyslexics still have a problem reading. And then so many schools in the US also decided to put children whom day dream, or maybe should have counselling or a tutor, on ADs. They all had ADHD suddenly. At last IOPLIst, we had a guy named Swim. a Good man. helped his mom and worked his hardest in school. But he called his generation, not generation X, but generation RX. because many a person still cannot function without the buggery bollocks meds now. The doctors made them into little depressed addicts. I was still wanting to be a doctor of psychiatry when i was twenty. My medical doctor sister paid for me to have freudian analysis. I got to test the first ADs. They sucked. I am a depressive. Always have been. Always will. But i dont need meds. It is just that i see the world as incredibly tough. it is, and always has been. They interfered with my ability to perform my academic studies and so i ended them. STAT. but i did first go thru a blind date, a rock concert, was on the damn AD and i had bronchitis. Dr gave me syrup and it paralyzed me. the cop carried me to the front row. My medical doctor sister said the effects could pass. just relax. and i did. dated the cop later. but, being a guinea pig with ADs was not fun. If i were not so strong willed, refusing to do what a doctor or parent or anyone said i must, I might still be on them. Or dead. Too many from my towns did take their lives after the helpey helperton docs put them on ADs. A psych will find a problem with u. So he makes money counselling u or keeping u on a med. My psych threatened to cut me off the ADs. but i had stopped taking them. A surgeon will find a problem that needs cutting. And every snake dealer doctor in the US is scripting Humira, which causes cancer and death, for everything under the sun. They don't care about us or the children. Seems to be another way to control people. And the people will pay for this stupidity. RE: Children being prescribed anti-depressants - I-carus8045 - 07-24-2018 Its a horrible occurence the way pharma plays with our lives. A childs developing brain just cant afford to have their chemistry imbalanced like that. Especially when the long term effects are a far sight from being fully understood. Our brains and bodies grow the way they do for a reason, and part of that is so we can develop the cognitive functions required to be able to cope efficiently with a full and prefferably happy life. Thats but to say that all people arent born without certain deficiencies or imbalances and defects. It happens, mutations on that level are proven and well researched. But inhibitors, tetracyclic agonisers and things of this type that mess with norephinephrine and whatever other horrors are in there are just not the right answer!!! When I was their age the overprescribed evil of the decade was methylphenidate, or in extreme cases dexamfetamine, I fell victim to both and the effects on my life, social ability and development are still felt today. so seeing chemicals like these being given to children tears into my heart, its not right. I have seen so many people my age and older go through an issue whilst prescribed these which they often collectively describe as an apathetic haze. Thats no way to live for an adult, and for a child who hasnt felt The joys of a fully developed pallete of emotions its simply inhumane. Apologies for the long-windedness of my response. I feel passionately about issues like this. I know big pharma isn't so evil that they have been secretly controlling mental development over decades so they can continue making money. But i still feel as if its morally wrong that anybody at all ends up making money off anothers struggles. I dunno, im not 100% sure how to feel on this one. Its a dangerous cycle that is gonna be pretty darn tough to break. They work very closely with many organizations that, as the money trail will show, are involved in the education of young minds and that is just one example. Medicine IS evolving, not repeating itself in a cyclical nature as history would show us of civilizations, however. That, IMO, is partly due to not knowing or understanding history but mainly an aspect of human nature which is what I believe the primary reason to be (regarding history, lol). It's not as fast as our iphon3s but physicians and researchers keep gaining more knowledge every day. The WHO classification system for essential medicines in a developed society is a crucial entity. It's what keeps certain meds alive, regardless of ridiculous anti-drug policies, because they've been shown time and time again to be effective at what they are advertised to do, and improve the well-being of any society. RE: Children being prescribed anti-depressants - I-carus8045 - 07-25-2018 Of course, innovations in chemistry are neverending, if it did stop, then the diseases and what not would still continue. An excellent example of that is antibiotics and VRE's. The needs of the will always outweigh the needs of the few in the eyes of our leaders, ensuring our futures and survival as a race. But this grouping of chemical classes cant possibly be 100% appropriate with children, and as has always been said, the children are our future. I cant deny the efficacy of anti depressents/psychotics etc. Because as you said they have been proven tine and time again to be beneficial in people and gives them a quality of life they previously wouldnt have even imagined. Unfortunately misdiagnosis runs rampant in this world. There is quite often a process of alot of trial and error in finding that one that works. Lol a doctor who picks the right one right out of he gate is definite lt worthy of respect RE: Children being prescribed anti-depressants - thepianist - 07-25-2018 (07-25-2018, 03:14 AM)I-carus8045 Wrote: Of course, innovations in chemistry are neverending, if it did stop, then the diseases and what not would still continue. In college, I found a couple of script bottles in her bathroom for Proz@c. I sat down with her to talk about it, because coincidentally she had a nice habit of NOT GOING TO ANY CLASS the entire 1st semester of college. She would just sit on the couch and play video games - all day. When I asked how she expected to pass her classes I would get a glazed look and a shrug of the shoulders at most. When I found out she had been scripted it since she was 12 years old (her mother tried to defend the decision to place her on meds that young by telling me that her daughter was 'much happier' when she takes her medicine). Well tickle me purple. If, as a parent, you choose to medicate your young children because they have too much energy (make them go outside and play) or seem upset (TALK to them and teach them about coping skills; KNOW who your child is) then, IMO, you have made a terrible mistake as a parent. I'm one myself; I'm not perfect but I strive to be a better parent and husband every single day. For myself and for the rest of my clan. I don't usually lecture, and I'm not saying that SOME younger people don't benefit from SSRIs, but when you give it to a child for over a decade, don't be surprised when you discover your child's modus operandi is 'don't worry, everything will be fiiiiine'. Hmm. RE: Children being prescribed anti-depressants - barq2 - 07-25-2018 I've only read the news article quickly, but I don't think it is well written. It gives these numbers of children on antidepressants, but for context it needs a proportion - what is this out of? How many children are there in the UK? A percentage would help. Better still would be a more systematic analysis by age. When it comes to the developing brain, that doesn't stop when you hit a legally defined point of adulthood. You could take the view it develops through into early-mid twenties. My view of ADs is complicated. Friends have found them life savers (literally). My experience of seroxat at 18 was horrific. I tried to kill myself, but was utterly unaware of the pain it caused people around me, or that my behaviour was so inappropriate. Years later it is still a source of real pain and regret that I behaved that way - even though it really wasn't my fault. Back then SSRIs were still the miracle cure, and compared to tricyclics (which I have also taken) the side effects are generally better. When I went back to the doctor with a list of new/worse symptoms, it never occurred to him that seroxat was the cause, so he doubled the dose. Let's just say it didn't go too well. I'm not anti-SSRI, but doctors need to inform patients of possible side effects and those that could be a medical emergency. Saying "you may feel worse before you feel better" is too vague and gives the patient no sense of what they are supposed to do about the feeling worse bit. My suspicion is lots of exogenous depression is being treated through the medical model, with this focus on serotonin, when there may be social causes. In many instances depression or anxiety may be entirely rational responses to the situation someone is in. RE: Children being prescribed anti-depressants - G.Elias - 07-26-2018 Its from a newspaper called the gaurdian, though this has been in the news more than once over the years, i dont know how many children there are in the UK,population around 60 million, how many are prescribed ADs out of that too many i think, dont think its a good idea at all to be giving children anti depressants, i just see it as an excuse to use these meds on as many of the population as possible, more money for big pharma, most ADs are not good for us in the long term, i know too many who have gotten more health issues cos of them, trouble is that drs do not tell us of side effects of most meds that get prescribed, probably cos we wouldnt want them,ADs are given out far too easily now, even trying to prscribe a AD to me for pain, i had been prescribed that 10-15 years ago, it had horrible side effects so i refused it, maybe a PK would be a better idea instead of dealing with the unknown. Def agree with your last point about social causes being a problem, probably for thousands of people, but that would mean addressing poverty, lack of decent housing, jobs that pay a decent wage not just enough to pay all the bills and day to day living costs, the list is endless, particularly after years of austerity mostly towards the poorest and most vulnerable, just dont think the people running this country want or interested in getting rid of poverty, start looking after people instead of constantly grinding their faces into the dirt and some might not actually not be depressed, there is easily the means to do it but government that leans to the right has no interest in doing that. The same people in power think foodbanks are a jolly good idea . |
