World News:
Iran has detained multiple people, including senior intelligence and military officials,
in connection to the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.
What’s the deal: According to the New York Times, citing two Iranian officials,
24 people have been detained in connection with the assassination.
Those detained include senior intelligence officers, military officials,
and bodyguards who were assigned to Haniyeh. In addition, Iranian reports
indicate that following the assassination, multiple guesthouse staff members
(including maids, cooks, and other personnel) were also detained,
with their electronic devices seized and some having their homes searched.
Concerns among senior Iranian officials:
The assassination, described by some as an “embarrassment” for Iran,
has led to a complete overhaul of security measures for all top officials.
This overhaul includes a change of bodyguards assigned to top officials,
changes to vehicle transportation, adjustments to where top officials work,
and the temporary relocation of Iranian officials.
What Iran is saying:
While not acknowledging the report, the IRGC said,
“the scope and details of this incident are under investigation and will be announced in due course.”
How was Haniyeh taken out: Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran after explosives,
planted in multiple rooms of an IRGC-run guesthouse, were remotely detonated.
Some Iranian officials, speaking anonymously to various news outlets,
believe the explosives were planted up to two months before the assassination.
Despite these reports, Hamas has claimed that an “airborne projectile”
was responsible for Haniyeh’s death.
Some info you should know:
Haniyeh was in Iran for the inauguration of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian,
following the death of former President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash on May 19, 2024.
Pezeshkian won the election on July 6th.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean Pierre is asked about the
US national debt after it topped $35 trillion this week.
KJP said that President Biden has taken steps to reduce the debt, including “signing a $1 trillion deficit reduction
into law and his budget would lower the deficit by another $3 trillion by making billionaires and the
biggest corporations pay their fair share.”
KJP also blamed the Trump administration for increasing the debt by $8 trillion and
congressional Republicans that want to blow up the debt.

1/2 Underreported:
Eric Edelman, the Vice Chair of the National Defense Strategy Commission,
told top Senate lawmakers on the Armed Services Committee that
“there is the potential for a near-term war and a potential that we might lose such a conflict.
The partnership that [has] emerged among China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea is a
major strategic shift that we have not completely accounted for in our defense planning.”
Edelman also said that his commission’s report found that
“China is in many ways outpacing the US. While we still have the strongest military
in the world with the farthest global reach, when we get to 1,000 miles of China’s shore,
we start to lose our military dominance and could find ourselves on the losing end of a conflict.”
Edelman also echoed warnings from other US officials that
“China has infiltrated our critical infrastructure networks to prevent or deter US action by
contesting our logistics, disrupting American power and water, and otherwise removing the
sanctuary of the homeland that we have long enjoyed.”
Edelman also touched on Russia, saying, “Russia has reconstituted its own
defense industrial base after it invaded Ukraine, much more rapidly than people anticipated.
Vladimir Putin seeks to reassert Russia as a great power and is happy to destabilize the world in order to do so.”
Edelman said, “Clearly, Iran and North Korea both feel emboldened by the current environment.”
