Most importantly your Pups were OK from getting Heartworms and fortunate to recieve sound treatment in a cost effective way and able to administrator yourself is invaluable. I've heard horror stories in regards to the amount it costs for treatment when they have gotten heartworms. I know most vet's mean well but the cost of treatment has gotten out of hand.. I actively look for ways to save $$ and care for both my German Shepherds at the same time. Being able to provide medicine without costly vet appointments helps greatly.

I worked at a kennel for 3 years and we gave our dogs Ivermectin (1% solution) which is meant to be injected into cattle or swine, The dosage is. (.1 cc for each 10 lbs. pound of body weight). I give my dog .75 cc orally once a month along with 3.5 cc of Pyrantel Pamoate. These are the same two ingredients in Heartgard Plus. You can buy a 50 ml bottle of 1% ivermectin for about $40 and a 16 oz. bottle of Pyrantel Pamoate for about $25. There are dosage instructions on the Pyrantel Pamoate bottle. Pyrantel Pamoate is also a dewormer. I bought a bottle of each 3 years ago and there is still plenty left. Both medications can be bought without a prescription. We never had any of our dogs test positive for heart worms. |
