Jobs and being a wage slave
#1
I'm just curious as to how many people on here deal with anxiety and depression because of their job.  Or they don't/can't have a job at all because of the anxiety.

I read it alot in the forums "I take ____ because of work stress."

I'd also like to know how many people on here work from home because of the whole anxiety thing.

I don't know if it's just a hunch but I bet alot of us do work from home because of the GAD/SAD and dealing with people in public thing.  I do!

I have terrible anxiety but havto work, if not for meds i'd never go outside, ifi could work from home I would. Worst part of my job is dealing with people, and meds help. Never used to be so agoraphobic but I'm getn worse as it goes...

I know what you mean.  Thanks for at least being honest.

Before I started doing what I do now and transitioned to it full time I was always in customer service and sales type call center jobs like you said "dealing with people", then a few years ago I quit the call center bs and found a good legit job working from home, but still customer service with some sales.  That same "dealing with people" day in and day out for so many years already and I was finally fed up.

I rarely have to deal with people now and mostly get to do what I want.  What I do now forces me out and about way more than any of my previous jobs though.

If you do want to try and work from home for one or more real companies just do a search for rat race rebellion... that's where I found my work from home job and it was with a big fortune 100 company, paid great, benefits, vacation time all that I just couldn't bring myself to do the corporate thing anymore.

My anxiety has prevented me from achieving so much in life. I had to drop out of school and just so much more. Anxiety and depression has stolen my life. Physically I am alive but I am not really living.

cutstack: please, don't give up. It is never too late to retrieve ur life.

u can get a GED. u can do these things online now, which cuts down on social interaction. I get spam email that the gvt will grant me monies if i chose to return to academia.

Is it possible to speak with a counselor at a college, whom is normally less expensive?

Anxiety and depression have usually been part of my life. But, with proper usage of least intrusive medicines, I was able to continue to become a wife, a mom, a doctor of law. a minister.

I try to think whom needs my help or someone to talk to, and help them. It eases anxiety and depression big time.

The hurt that people will do to u (and, in my world, people have been vicious,) cannot be worse than harm u r now allowing to urself. I know that sounds so cruel to say.

You still have the physical ability to live. Have the life of your dreams.

Maybe use this summer to seek some counselling and trying to figure out how to become the person u r meant to be.

(I am sure u a wonderful person. And, i know people can be so horrific to others. But, u r blessed to be physically well. There is surely still time to become happier with you and the world around u.)

I hope I have not offended you.

I don't think any of our lives turned out exactly as we had planned.

But, I do believe it can be better for u.

We are here if u need us.

Cutstack, sorry to hear about school. Not sure what country you are in, but online diplomas and degrees are increasingly common and increasingly seen as legitimate (ten years back they were a bit more unusual, but many people do them now to combine with paid work, etc). Regular colleges and universities increasingly offer online versions of their courses. If that feels too much, there are lists of Massive Open Online Courses. Many are free and only charge for the certificate/qualification. You can dip into something without being committed. Maybe try a few things out. Hopefully you might find something that interests you and gives you back some of what you lost. Good luck. x

Classemlaff, I wonder how much of your opening question is chicken and egg - what came first? My job changed. The whole sector I work in is totally different to a decade ago. It caused huge stress and anxiety, which became a medical problem, which meant treatment. Ironically I'm seen as very calm by colleagues, but it is all an act (with some pharmacological assistance). I'm torn between being proud to have "coped", albeit with some serious wobbles, and depressed that doing my job requires medication. Doesn't that suggest something very wrong with society, not just with my own psychology?

There are still some wonderful employers who are understanding and supportive, but you have to seek them out (and needs a bit of luck).

Question for those working from home... does it help your anxiety? I can do it some days, but it can also leave me feeling more isolated. What's your experience?

Speaking of being a wage slave, you can thank those international trade agreements for much of the stress. Wages have not gone up in buying power in the last 30 years, much of that due to nafta and offshoring. Brace yourself for the tpp which obomber was pushing and which hitlerly has been paid to push. If that goes through it will be even worse. The people with big money have paid to make sure they get more and you get less.

The bribes are in, the politicians are paid off to pass it. The only obstacle is in europe where there has sprung up resistance to it because it screws the common man over there too. Here, the media tells us all is well and the tpp is the greatest thing since the bank bailout.

This may be a bit off topic but I bet if you got paid more you would have less stress at work.

TTIP was supported by the UK, but they are withdrawing from the EU, so not sure how much influence they will have. France is very anti TTIP so I'm not sure this will go ahead. The EU is going cold on the idea. The biggest concern seems to be large companies being able to take a government to court for lost revenue if they enact a law that harms their profits (or potential profits). That could be anything from regulations on how cigarettes are sold/marketed to environmental protections. So in Europe there has been widespread protest across the political spectrum.

The bad news is that I would expect the UK to embrace TTIP (or something similar) because following Brexit it will need new trade deals.
