I have been scripted them for ages (just about every one out there) along with everything else docs want to try before ben***. All the alternatives mentioned from herbal stuff to anti-depressants , you name it. sls642, you can put your trust in our Mods and Admins. They will act very quickly if a thread gets hijacked or if posts turn into recreational banter. This thread is titled Effective sleeping pills - so you can rest assured that it is being very closely monitored. And please be careful not to be too dismissive of "herbal stuff to anti-depressants". Whilst those meds may be too woo-woo for you, as is evidenced by the numerous posts in this thread, they are Effective sleeping pills for many members. In fact, what is abundantly clear is that what is great for one insomniac is utterly useless for another. It's fanciful to think that another member will simply be able to tell you what "the most effective pill" is for your particular metabolism. You have ruled out Z-class drugs and short acting b3nzo's and you favor long-acting b3nzos. You can very easily find you a table listing the half lives of the longer-acting b3nzo's using any search engine. And then, like the rest of us, it is a matter of working through each one of them until you find the one or two that suit you best. Unfortunately, the fast track / short cut that you are seeking does not exist. It takes work - over many many sleepless nights. The last thing I want to do is stifle honest discussion, but ultimately you will have to rely on yourself to find that elusive 'effective sleeping pill'.
There's a difference between having an opinion and having an informed opinion.
Wow sls642. That's quite the attitude from someone that just left newbie status. Richard is absolutely right in everything he said. Most people posting in this thread ARE INSOMNIACS with "serious problems." I am going on 30 years with chronic and "serious" sleep issues. So yeah I took offense to the tone of your post. Respect that what works for you is not always what works or is best for others. You seem to think ben#@$ are the end all of treatment and very dismissive of z drugs. For me the z drugs saved my life, and I try to steer clear of ben#@$. And PLEASE DO NOT be dismissive of people looking for herbal/homeopathic remedies. I would much rather use those if I could.
In response to your question, I had success with at!v@n, but the long term cloudiness made me steer clear.

This is very interesting and something I need to try (passionflower and Valerian Root). I have noticed that Z0pi!cl0ne works well (for me), but I often wake up tired even after 8+ hours of sleep. The best sleep aid I have ever had consistently was plenty of exercise and quality Benz***. But it seems very hard to find a reputable vendor for high quality Benz***. I'm hoping by the time I reach 50 posts I might gain access to a reliable vendor for that.

The tolerance to the benzos if used for chronic insomnia is crazy. Midazolam toll tolerance is built and then zolpidem till tolerance is built, is the best rotation of them. I will get up to a somewhat higher dose than what is suggested because of tolerance. I am jealous of the people who say lunesta and all these weaker meds work for them. Most reviews on these meds online say they don’t work for most people but they do work for some and I wish I was in that category since I would have so much more to throw at my severe insomnia. Oh I almost forgot, good old Halcion works well for me too. Works about as good as midazolam.

I’ve found a lot of help with Temazepam, I know it’s a benzo so the Repercussions could definitely outweigh the benefits that I am getting right now from it. But it’s the best sleep I’ve been able to get with all the different meds out there. And I maybe still only get like 6 hours. But that’s better than 2-3 without anything. It was funny the doctor recommended those to me over; Ambien, Lunesta. I know they all have their own respectful benefits but they all also come with a bit of a toll, coming off them being the biggest. But I find your tolerance build to this one quite faster to me at least than most. But I just take those meds as a grain of salt. ‘Here n there so they keep their strength’

Z@lpid£m is my go-to and I swear by it - but I dont take when I've had alcohol as don't like how it interacts.
But I wanted to share an OTC trick I stumbled across that I use at weekends if I've had a drink. Doxylamine Succinate is a non-addictive antihistamine that causes drowsiness. There's a well known brand called Kirkland Sleep Aid. The suggested dose is one pill of 25mg, however when I took this on it's own (on a night with no alcohol) I didn't find it that effective and made me waaaayy groggy the next day. But I found that if I cut the pill into QUARTERS, so approx a 6mg dose, and take it approx 20mins before sleep on nights when I've had some alcohol earlier in the evening, it it sends me straight to sleep but doesn't have the groggy effects next day. (I usually have a couple of glasses of wine early evening, then take the Doxy as I'm going to bed, a good 2-3 hours after I've stopped drinking). Now I know there are issues around mixing certain medication with alcohol, but Doxy is said to have a 'moderate' interaction with alcohol in that it 'can increase the nervous system side effects of doxylamine such as dizziness, drowsiness, and difficulty concentrating', so the advice online is that you should 'avoid OR LIMIT alcohol when taking Doxy'. Personally, because its such a small dose at 6mg, I find this an acceptable risk but each to their own. In general, alcohol has a terrible effect on my sleep quality and even 1 glass of wine will give me a restless night of 'light' sleep. But if I have the small dose of Doxy after alcohol I sleep really well with no side effects. I have noticed that if I increase the dosage even a little above the quarter pill, then I feel quite sleepy in the morning and it's harder to get out of bed. So 6mg seems to be the sweet spot for me. I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has any thoughts on this approach?

In the US, Doxy is known as Benedryl. I think using it for sleep occasionally is fine, however using it often makes your body build up a tolerance to it. Using it for sleep alot, especially when mixing it with alcohol can be very hard on your kidneys. I'm glad you found something that works for you on the off nights.
