The Lambda variant, which is believed to have been first detected in Peru about a year ago, is a new concern to scientists who say mutations could potentially be resistant to COVID-19 vaccines.

The World Health Organization said the variant’s mutations could increase its transmissibility or possibly increase its resistance to "neutralizing antibodies." The health body called Lambda, or C.37, a "variant of interest."

Dr. Murthy: Delta variant is ‘far more transmissible’ than other COVID variantsVideo
"So far we have seen no indication that the lambda variant is more aggressive," Jairo Mendez-Rico, a WHO virologist, told the Deutsche Welle. "It is possible that it may exhibit higher infection rates, but we don't yet have enough reliable data to compare it to gamma or delta."

He told the German outlet that as SARS-CoV-2 evolves, it may start to become more transmissible, but not as deadly.

Jeff Barrett, director of the COVID-19 Genomics Initiative at the Wellcome Sanger Institute in the UK, told the Financial Times that a reason it is challenging to "make sense of the threat from lambda, using computational and lab data, is that it has rather an unusual set of mutations, compared with other variants."

The vaccines most used in Western countries still appear to offer strong protection against the highly contagious delta variant, first identified in India and now spreading in more than 90 other countries.

Thanks for posting these regular updates Charon.
The one consistent message is that the vaccines work extremely well in preventing serious illness, hospitalization, ICU, death.
We are blessed to live in countries where we have the vaccines so available. We're the envy of so many countries around the world.
I'm the first to admit that Western medicine is not infallible. But getting vaccinated for Covid 19 is a no-brainer imho.

New CDC brief says vaccines may be less effective against delta variant
An internal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention brief published by the Washington Post Thursday reveals more details about why the delta variant is different to and more concerning than other strains of the coronavirus.

The CDC said the main differences between the delta variant and previous strains is that delta is highly contagious and likely more severe. Plus, breakthrough infections caused by delta may be as transmissible as unvaccinated cases.

CDC: ‘EXTREME MEASURES’ NEEDED TO CONTROL DELTA COVID IN NEW YORK

The CDC has learned the new Delta variant seems to spread as easily as chickenpox and easier than many viruses, including the 1918 "Spanish" flu.

In a new memo, first obtained by the Washington Post, the CDC warns the COVID Delta variant spreads as easily as chickenpox. It's also more transmissible than MERS, SARS, Ebola, the common cold, seasonal flu, the the 1918 "Spanish" flu, and Smallpox, according to the CDC.

People infected with the Delta variant can spread it to about nine others and people who are vaccinated may spread it just as fast, officials say.

There's a greater risk of disease, hospitalization and death among those who are unvaccinated but vaccine breakthrough cases are expected, which may also reduce public confidence in vaccines, the CDC adds.

STAY INFORMED: CDC WEBSITE ABOUT CORONAVIRUS
Vaccines prevent about 90 percent from getting a severe disease, but the vaccine appears to be less effective, under 90 percent, at preventing infection or transmission, officials say.

"The Delta variant of COVID -19 now accounts for about 1 in every 5 new coronavirus infections in the US. Health experts warn that regions where less than half the people are fully vaccinated could see infections surge this fall and winter, including many regions in New York State," the New York State Health Department wrote on Facebook.

CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky confirmed the memo to CNN and said "extreme" measures are needed to get the new COVID outbreak under control.

"The measures we need to get this under control -- they're extreme. The measures you need are extreme," Walensky told CNN.

On Wednesday, one day after the CDC updated its mask guidance, Gov. Cuomo said "dramatic action" is needed to slow the spread of COVID in New York.

One county in the region is telling everyone to put the mask back on. Cuomo has yet to require New Yorkers to wear masks. He says officials are still looking at data adding, for now, local governments can make their own decisions.

Cuomo's staff have pinpointed 117 ZIP codes across New York where COVID is spreading more rapidly.

Gov. Cuomo once again said it's a "pandemic of unvaccinated" as 3.5 million New Yorkers, which is bigger than the population in 21 states, are not vaccinated.

On Wednesday, Gov. Cuomo announced there were 2,567 new COVID cases in the previous 24 hours. On June 28, there were 275 cases, an increase of over 700 percent.

According to Cuomo, 74.9 percent of all New Yorkers 18 and older have received at least one vaccine while 68.3 percent have completed their vaccine series. 62.7 percent of all eligible New Yorkers have at least one vaccine dose.

If I read about another politician using the words "Pandemic of the Un-Vaccinated" I am going to puke.

Not having a good day. I was fully vaccinated back in April with Moderna. Started feeling crappy this past Monday, had a Covid test this morning and they did two swabs, one for antigen and one for PCR. The antigen test came back positive.

So much for "pandemic of the un-vaccinated" in my personal experience.

That is all BS to make some of us with medical conditions be made to be the bad guys.

Father God in Jesus precious name, I ask that you heal Jack and prevent him from going into this virus again Lord. Let him have a full miracle healing and recovery. The man did what gvt said to do. Got the vaccine. Don't punish him for the lack of consciences of those in power.

Heal him Lord. Let him recover quickly with no long term affects I pray.

So sorry ghost of jack. Feel better.

I cannot believe the people now on the covid private forum. One family was vaccinated. But for 2 very young children. The family got covid again and only the mom survived. Five dead whom were vaccinated. Took precautions.

And people on that forum say: Good. Anyone who did not get the vaccine, or who allegedly got the vaccine and then got sick, deserves it.

This illness has brought out the absolute worst in many a person.

We put it up as a Meme, but it is true: After the pandemic, I don't want to see many of you then either.

Walls have gone up. People do not care for others.

Houseshare is in area wherein if all co workers are vaccinated, no one has to wear masks. With his autoimmunes, he has been advised aGAINST IT for right now. And people are talking about doing violence to those whom won't take the vaccine. For medical reasons. Cuz now co workers have to still wear a mask.

Be prepared. Despite the numbers, the gvt is claiming it is the unvaccinated whom are spreading delta and lamda. Not true. But be prepared for violence. Never discuss the vaccine with strangers.

It's really sad to hear that people behave in such ugly ways. I don't know why people get so judgemental about illness (it was the same with AIDS many years ago).

In the UK most people are going for the vaccine and the majority have had their 2nd shot. It's almost entirely the Delta Variant that's circulating here so the vaccines aren't quite as good. Seems they still decrease your chances of getting COVID, but if you do get it then it's unlikely to put you in hospital - that's the government message, which you'll notice ignores people with disabilities or chronic illnesses.

The division in the UK is more about wearing masks or not e.g. on public transport. The UK Government no longer requires masks in England (Scotland, Wales and N Ireland have their devolved governments/assemblies who make their own decisions). I really don't understand why Boris Johnson removed the rule about masks. Yes he wanted to open everything up again, and his instincts are sort of libertarian (despite having been forced to enact these lockdowns). But you can give people back all their normal rights to go where they like and meet indoors with who they want to, but masks don't interfere with any of those rights. It's already been made clear that anyone who has a medical problem with wearing a mask was exempt. But the rest of us really should be wearing masks. I find it mind-boggling that people using the London Underground, including the deep tunnels where there is little fresh air, don't wear masks.

As there are people in my life who would not survive COVID, so I have to be very careful not to walk it into their houses. If I'm using public transport then I'm certainly wearing a mask - same if I go to a poorly ventilated shop. I go for FFP2 and FFP3 types, which are European standards, a bit like N95 for the USA. They are slightly uncomfortable after a while and the FFP3 (highest grade) are expensive. However I wouldn't need these respirator masks if everyone else was wearing their cloth or surgical masks.

Recently I was "pinged" by the UK COVID app to let me know I'd been in close contact with someone who had tested positive the next day (so they were in their infectious stage). I didn't get it thanks to the combination of vaccination and mask wearing. However that's me being careful and no thanks to the Government.

Take care out there, especially you Charon. x

COVID-19: University In Region To Fine, Limit WiFi To Unvaccinated Students

Students and staff at an area college will have to get vaccinated for COVID-19 before the fall semester, or else face harsh penalties.

Quinnipiac University located in Hamden, in New Haven County, Connecticut, announced that it will be fining students who do not receive a vaccine, as well as exempting students who miss COVID-19 testing. Those in violation of vaccination policies will also lose access to the school’s campus network and wi-fi.

Officials said that students who fail to receive a COVID-19 vaccine will be fined up to $2,275 for the semester, and unvaccinated students who fail to submit to weekly testing will be subject to fines.

Weekly fines will start at $100 per week for the unvaccinated students, with increases of $25 after every two weeks, up to a maximum of $200 weekly. Fines will cease once a student uploads a vaccination record to the school's database to confirm the shots were received.

Students, faculty, and staff at Quinnipiac must be vaccinated before the start of the fall semester. Vaccination records were supposed to be submitted by Sunday, Aug. 1, though hundreds of students missed the deadline, the school announced in an email released this week.

Those not in compliance by Tuesday, Sept. 14 will begin to face punishments. Students who do receive one dose of a two-dose vaccination by Wednesday, Aug. 25 will not be charged as long as they are fully vaccinated by Sept. 14.

Students must isolate for 10 days if they test positive for COVID-19 regardless of their vaccination status, as per Quinnipiac protocols. However, vaccinated students don’t have to quarantine if they are a confirmed contact of a positive case unless they are symptomatic.

Fees and penalties will be waived for students who have received one dose of a two-dose vaccine by Aug. 25, and unvaccinated students must still upload a negative PCR test within five days of returning to campus.

“Our goal is to protect the health of our entire university community,” the school wrote in an email released this week. “In order to accomplish this, we must know if you have been vaccinated.”
