I heard that he has passed.

He is a great all time country singer, maybe the number one.

Country music legend Merle Haggard, who along with his band "The Strangers" helped create the Bakersfield sound, has died in California after months of ill health. He passed away on his 79th birthday.

Merle's voice and songs shone all on their own - But as a Texan I can't help loving this Willie & Merle duet as possibly the best work both of them ever released.  Willie & Waylon Jennings made some great music together, but the contrast between Willie's tenor and Merle's scratchy bass voices here works remarkably - One can picture the characters based on the vocals, and the moral of the story the song tells is eternal.

Rest in Peace Merle - You and the rest of the "Outlaws" provided the soundtrack to my high school and college years.

I usually hate listening to live recordings, but I thoroughly enjoy watching live performance's of Merle Haggard's. It's like watching an artisan cook working; it's flowing, it's intricate, it's almost mezsmerising to watch.

Here's to another Country legend, Roy Clark.

Everyone who's ever been on a first date will love this one - I am very, very lucky to have married my college sweetheart long before Collin Raye released this one, and yet still to feel it in my bones every time we dance to it on the rare occasions we go dancing after dinner on a "date nght".
