National DNA Day



Although DNA Day was made into an official observance by the U.S. Congress, it is the NGHRI (National Human Genome Research Institute) who seem to organise events and speakers to go into halls and speak to both students and the general public who wish to find out more about DNA. The day commemorates the 50 year anniversary of James Watson and Francis Crick’s discovery (and published article) of the Double Helix, as well as the completion of the Genome Project which took 13 years to complete.

The Human Genome Project was completed in April 2003 and this day is to honor that, as well as the discovery of the Double Helix.

World Malaria Day



Malaria Day reflects on the progress that the Global Community has made in eradicating and controlling the spread of this disease. The day also allows for the Global Community which made remarkable progress in fighting Malaria to re-group and help to fight and control other infectious diseases.

Malaria is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito and can leave a person feeling feverish and have the chills. Malaria Day is a get together of people to partake in activities and to carry on investing for the future in order to defeat Malaria. Malaria Day is celebrated by every kind of people across the globe and is a strong group of people who can make change!

The best way to help and celebrate Malaria Day would be to get together with friends and family and help invest in the future of defeating Malaria and regroup to fight other infections.

The history of plumbers goes back to the birth of internal plumbing and sewers, and are responsible for the spread of civilization away from naturally occurring bodies of fresh water. 1980: Black Sabbath released their ninth studio album Heaven and Hell which was their first album with Ronnie James Dio singing for them, who replaced Ozzy Osbourne the previous year. The album went on to reach number twenty-eight on the Billboard 200 Album Chart and sell one million copies in the U.S.

1979: The movie Rock ‘n’ Roll High School which featured The Ramones premiered in Los Angeles.

1974: Jim Morrison’s longtime girlfriend Pamela Courson died of an apparent heroin overdose in her apartment in Los Angeles. She was 27 years old.

1973: Sweet received their first Gold single in the U.S. for “Little Willy” which peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart.

National Richter Scale Day



If there’s ever a day to hold onto hats, double-test foundations and keep an ear out for rumblings deep within the Earth, it’s Richter Scale Day. This occasion is an acknowledgement and celebration of the birthday of the man who taught the world how to measure earthquakes – Charles F. Richter.

Born in 1900, the American earthquake obsessive (technically known as a ‘seismologist’), came up with the Richter Scale in 1935, while at the California Institute of Technology. Since then, the world has been able to compare various earthquakes and investigate their relative power for destruction. The 20th century’s biggest happened in Chile on 22 May 1960, measuring a magnitude of 9.5.

Some people celebrate by getting together with a bunch of friends to watch their favourite disaster films. 1974’s Earthquake, 1999’s Aftershock: Earthquake in New York and 2003’s The Core are all popular choices.

Guide dogs are amongst the most phenomenal animals on the planet, and the difference they make to the lives of those without sight simply cannot be overstated. It is impossible to feel anything but pure love and awe when you witness just how dedicated these guys are to their owners, or, it seems, best friends, and how precious and adorable the relationship the two of them have is. 1982: While on his way to rehearse with The Clash in London, singer Joe Strummer had a change of heart and boarded a train to France, which caused The Clash to cancel a tour. Strummer re-appeared three weeks later claiming he was suffering from exhaustion.

1978: Ringo Starr’s television special Ringo, which was a musical adaptation of The Prince and the Pauper, narrated by George Harrison aired on NBC. The following week, television ratings revealed that it finished 53rd out of 65 programs.

1968: The Beatles recorded “Octopus’s Garden”. The song was one of only two songs written by Ringo Starr that The Beatles recorded.

BTW  I have  professionally framed picture of yellow lab puppies, almost exact same picture, hung over my piano.
I almost completed my certification to train therapeutic dogs (Animal Behavioral Specialist) when I was injured and couldn't continue.
There went my retirement dream - to breed and train labs for handicapped people.
God bless the people who work with these animals.  They really make a difference in many people's lives.

World Tapir Day



There’s an odd little creature that’s a native of Central and South America, and can even be found in SE Asia. What kind of odd critter? Well, it looks a bit like a pig, with it’s general build and toes with hooves, but it also looks a bit, just a little, like an elephant with its long snout! What are we talking about? The Tapir! This wonderful animal is currently on the watch-list as it has been over-hunted for its meat and hides. World Tapir Day raises awareness about these endangered animals and helps to protect them for future generations.

History of World Tapir Day

World Tapir Day was established with the intent of protecting all the members of this endangered species from extinction, that they might still be here for our children. The areas they inhabit are either forest or jungle, which makes them particularly vulnerable to deforestation, especially as large herbivores. But the dangers of their extinction goes even further than just the loss of another unique species, the loss of the Tapir could in fact endanger the entire remaining forests. As part of their natural habits, they also serve to disperse seeds throughout the jungle, and are one of the oldest species found in these areas.

Many people are unaware of the Tapir as a species, meaning they are losing a special part of the world without ever knowing they exist. So unknown are these animals that those who visit Zoos that frequently mistake them for members of another species. This is even a problem in those areas where they live natively, so World Tapir Day was established to help raise world awareness of this species.

Biological Clock Day



The words ‘biological clock’ may conjure up images of dancing babies, but there’s much more to the biological clock than that last minute urge to make babies that supposedly kicks in at a certain point in a woman’s life.

For a start, both men and women have a biological clock, as being celebrated by Biological Clock Day, and it affects their behavior and mood on a daily basis. It maintains a sleep-wake pattern that fits in with the light and dark of a day on Earth. More formally known as the circadian rhythm, it monitors light, temperature and other environmental factors to influence things like alertness, energy levels, hunger and motivation.

The technology of today’s world can upset the balance of the biological clock, so celebrate Biological Clock Day by setting aside some time to re-regulate it; create a regular bedtime routine, minimize naps and eat regularly.

As we go through our day taking in the wonders around us with a disinterested eye, we often forget to take the time to remember that there were amazing people and lives that went into building the structure of the society we live in. It wasn’t that long ago that everything from the clothes we wear to the buildings we inhabit were built in highly dangerous conditions lacking the rules and regulations that serve to keep workers safe in modern industry. Workers’ Memorial Day commemorates the lives that have been given in the pursuit of modern comfort and convenience, and stands for the worldwide efforts to create safety in the workplace.

History of Workers’ Memorial Day

During the 1950’s an organization was established that stood to unite the Labor Unions in a single unified goal. The American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) was established in 1955, comprised of union organizations from many different nations. There were two organizations, the AFL and the CIO that came together to create this organization with the purpose of representing workers all over the world in creating a safe workplace.

In April of 1970 Workers’ Memorial Day was established to bring awareness to the hundreds of thousands of people all over the world who had died just trying to get through another workday. This holiday was established in the same year that the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) came into effect in the United States, an event that helped to both standardize safety protocols and create an organization that would visit sites to enforce them. It didn't take long before this same practice was picked up and implemented in multiple industrialized countries all over the world.

Save The Frogs Day

Frogs just don’t get enough love, or enough recognition that certain species of them are in just as much danger of passing from the Earth as bees. Save The Frogs Day aims to raise awareness about these wonderful amphibians and everything they do for us. If you have an abiding hatred of all things insect, then you should definitely be out there beating a drum for Save The Frogs Day! But that’s just the beginning!

History of Save The Frogs Day

Frogs can be found all over the world, and have been with us for an incredibly long time, with the first ancestor of the modern frog being dated to the Triassic period. That’s a really long time ago! Since then these almost entirely carnivorous beasties have been devouring every known type of insect all over the world. Not a fan of mosquitoes? You should totally be a fan of the frog, they eat tons of them every year! Sometimes they even eat them before they become mosquitoes, snacking on the mosquito larvae before they ever have a chance to grow into the blood-sucking menaces we all love to hate.

Frogs are often mistaken for toads, the difference being that toads are capable of living on dry land for long periods of time. Frogs require very moist environments, in part because their skin is semi-permeable, allowing water and gases to pass through it with ease! Any lover of frogs knows that they also have amazing vocalizations, the singing of frogs being one of the first signs of Spring in some areas, even in metropolitan areas where they’ll find stagnant ponds and ditches to live in.

Unfortunately, frogs are endangered, the number of frogs in the world has been dropping rapidly since the 1950’s, and it’s believed that over a hundred species of frogs have vanished from the world just since the 80’s! Save The Frogs Day works to raise awareness about the dangers they face, and the repercussions of living in a world without frogs.

International Astronomy Day



Astronomy allows us to see the history of the universe with our own eyes. The stars that twinkle as you look out on a dark, clear night may not exist right now. They existed at whatever point in history they emitted that light, which has taken millions of years to reach Earth.

Celebrate this marvelous feat on International Astronomy Day by participating in a little stargazing. Check out your local planetarium or library for activities, or simply find a quiet, dark spot to look out onto the sparkling canvas that lies above our heads. Use books or websites to identify the players in the Universe’s spectacular, historical light show.

Telescopes allow us to see much more than is visible to the naked eye. On International Astronomy Day, many organizations offer the public the use of telescopes to experience sights of the Universe that they've never seen before.

In the dark annals of history it served to protect us from danger as we came down from the trees and raised ourselves onto two feet. So strongly attached to our development is it that it is connected to multiple different neurological systems, and as such can trigger memories in a way that little else can. With it we can identify our favorite dish, or pick up the wafting scent of our favorite person, that’s right, Sense of Smell Day is dedicated to this most amazing of our (far more than five) senses.

History of Sense of Smell

The Sense of Smell Institute sponsors this holiday for reasons so obvious we needn't mention it. The importance of the sense of smell is often overlooked, and some don’t truly appreciate how much of a role it plays in every day of our lives. Some of the most important and comforting things we can experience are intricately tied to our sense of smell, and our sense of smell becomes much less discerning without it.

The Sense of Smell Institute is the research and education division of The Fragrance Foundation.
Interesting things that this institute has managed to unveil is the fact that no two people smell odors in quite the same way. As the day progresses your sense of smell gets stronger, with the evening representing our strongest sense of smell. This makes a certain amount of sense when you consider that during the day our sight is the most important sense in identifying dangers, and at night, it could be a scent on the wind that saved our ancestors.

Another interesting revelation is that Vitamin A is not, as purported, good for our eyesight by and large, but is actually vitally important for our sense of smell.

A lack of it can actually cause Anosmia! (An odd little word that means ‘loss of a sense of smell’.)

National Honesty Day



If you’re like most people, you’re utterly sick of the complete lack of honesty that exists in the world today. Whether it’s companies using misleading language on their products (Blueberry Muffins, contain no blueberries) or politicians being incapable of telling the whole truth of a situation, our lives are utterly inundated with a world of people and companies trying to sell us a line.

Honesty Day exists to encourage people from every walk of life, and especially those in charge, to try being honest with their constituents and customers.

History of Honesty Day

Former press secretary M. Hirsh Goldberg of Maryland brought this holiday into existence back in the 1990’s as part of the process of writing his book The Book of Lies: Fibs, Tales, Schemes, Scams, Fakes, and Frauds That Have Changed the Course of History and Affect Our Daily Lives. The concept for the day was simple, ask direct questions without ulterior motives, and expect answers of occasionally brutal honesty. While these situations create difficult relations between people sometimes, it’s the first step on the road to utterly healing wounds and creating clear communication that allows proper understanding.

Failing to be honest in relationships, in politics, and even in historical education has led to so many misunderstandings that we are all affected by them. When we speak with our friends and partners, we often choose to withhold certain words, not because they aren’t true, but because we can’t see past the hurt they’ll cause to the boils their lance by no longer being held within. While being honest on Honesty Day, you have to remember that being honesty requires honesty with yourself first. Once you accept your true feelings and motivations, you can clearly speak with others, and do so with complete forthrightness.

1977: Led Zeppelin set an attendance record for a single-act concert at the Pontiac Silverdome outside of Detroit which attracted 77, 229 fans.

1976: Keith Moon reportedly paid several cab drivers $100 each to block off a street in New York City so he could empty his hotel room’s contents onto the empty street below.

1970: Allman Brothers Band tour manager Twiggs Lyndon was arrested for stabbing the club manager of Aliotta’s in Buffalo, NY to death over a contractual dispute. Lyndon would later be acquitted by pleading temporary insanity caused by being their tour manager.

Purebred Dog Day



Mutts are adorable, and there is no denying that—their floppy ears, patches of different-colored fur, and deep loving eyes. For those who just need a friend, someone who will be thrilled to see them when they get home, snuggle on cold evenings and always be up for an adventure, a mutt is the perfect pet. But over the millennia, there have been many other reasons people have needed dogs, to do many things they could not do alone, and those jobs required a special type of dog to do them right.

As lovable as 25-pound mutts are, they don’t make very effective herding dogs, being too small to be taken seriously by both wolves and cows or sheep. When an excellent sense of smell is required, nothing beats the nose of the bloodhound that can follow scents both on the ground and in the air with its 300 million scent receptors. What dog could possibly be better suited to pulling a sled though ice and snow than the resilient, independent husky?

Due to the occasional puppy mill horror story we see on TV, dog breeders get a bad rap these days. And granted, there are breeders who care only about making money as fast as possible, completely disregarding the welfare of their dogs and the genetic flaws that are passed on from one dog to the next in the general rush to sell the next litter of puppies. Many dog breeds, however, have made enormous contributions to society, and Purebred Dog Day is about celebrating these majestic, loyal creatures that have helped humans in so many ways.

The History of Purebred Dog Day

Purebred Dog Day was officially created by a woman named Susi, a writer-editor, in 2014. However, the holiday was actually born out of years of frustration of responsible dog breeders as well as the owners of purebred dogs, who were simply tired of being vilified by the media as greedy and ruthless.

Purebred dogs, they said, have helped people in countless different ways, so why should we not celebrate them? If it weren't for Siberian Huskies and Alaskan Malamutes, the entire small city of Nome, Alaska, may well have died from the outbreak of diphtheria that struck it in 1925. The dogs saved the inhabitants of Nome from that fate by making a 1,085-kilometer run to bring them the serum they needed to recover.

In the 1900s, a St. Bernard living named Barry living in Switzerland rescued over 40 people from from freezing to death in the surrounding mountains throughout his lifetime. Those stories, however impressive, are just the very tip of the iceberg. Every day, purebred dogs the world over help the blind cross streets, sniff out drugs, and help people recover from serious mental conditions.

Purebred Dog Day was created so people could remember just how much purebred dogs have done and continue to do for humanity, as well as remind them that dog breeding is not the vile business that organizations like PETA tend to portray it as.

Everybody loves to spend time on their hobbies–no matter whether you love shopping, diving, going to the cinema, travelling, hiking, or one of thousands of other leisure activities, you probably spend a large part of your life figuring out how to it more often. Unfortunately, however, the truth is that in order to have the money to do what you love to do, you also have to work. Of course, there are some lucky people among us truly love their jobs, but regardless of how much we enjoy doing our jobs, we have to do them. But we should also remember that each and every little job we do is necessary and valuable to society, from garbage man to nurse to teacher to policeman. Together, all of us build society, making it a better, safer place with each passing year.

Now, isn’t that something worth celebrating? We think it is, so let’s celebrate International Workers’ Day together!

The History of International Workers’ Day

In the late 19th Century, trade union and labor movements grew right along with countless industries, prompting trade unionists to begin to choose various days to celebrate the people’s labor. In the United States and Canada, a September holiday called Labour Day, was first proposed in the 1880s. Several years later, in 1887, North America officially established Labor Day.

May 1st, on the other hand, was chosen for International Workers’ Day to commemorate the Haymarket affair of May 4th 1886 in Chicago, when an unidentified person threw a bomb at the police, who responded by opening fire on the workers, killing four of them. Today, International Workers’ day is celebrated on every continent.

Baby Day



Smiley, squishy, faces are perfect reasons to put Baby Day on the map. Although it’s difficult to pinpoint why, or where this day originated, we can easily speculate! Anyone who has ever yearned for, had, or known a baby, could list dozens of reasons why babies are special. Babies are not just cute, but they are innocent in a way that helps you to see goodness in the world. They give you hope, happiness, and make you strive to become a better person.

What more could you ask for?

Mark Baby Day in your calendar, and use it to cherish the baby you have, or plan for the baby you want. If you aren't planning on making babies any time soon, or your ‘baby’ is walking around in 6 inch heels, or sporting a 5 o’clock shadow, take this day to celebrate with a niece, nephew, or grandchild. Show them how blessed you feel to have them in your life, and have a fantastic day.

Alternatively, if there are no babies in your family, why not make a gift basket for a new mother in your neighborhood, or graciously donate to a baby related charity? Do something precious this Baby Day!

Millions of people all over the world suffer from Asthma, and if you’ve ever met one who suffers from it then you’re familiar with the pssst psst sound of the inhalers that make a relatively normal day to day life possible for them. World Asthma Day is dedicated to raising awareness about this pernicious disease and seeks to bring awareness and advanced asthma care to sufferers throughout the world.

History of World Asthma Day

World Asthma Day was initially established in 1998 by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA). While almost all of us are familiar with the sound and visual of an inhaler for Asthma being used, not all of us are aware of the actual nature, cause, and that there are multiple types of asthma out there. The truth of the matter is asthma isn’t entirely understood, what is known is that there are multiple factors at play in the complex chemistry that creates an asthma sufferer. These include genetic interactions and elements in the environment that can change both the severity and how likely it is to respond to treatment.

The known aggravators of asthma are many and include everything from allergens, air pollution, and other chemicals that can appear in the environment that irritate the lungs. In high enough concentrations these factors can cause serious asthma attacks in sufferers and aggravate cases that are otherwise mild.

Asthma is incredibly prevalent in those areas that suffer from low air quality as a result, and those areas also tend to be those that house low-income and minority communities. As such these already disadvantaged individuals are the highest sufferers of this pernicious disease. An added factor is psychological stress, and again this element is particularly high in those living on the edge of poverty, increasing its occurrence there further.
