That article about the "pyjama party" appeared because his agent threw him under a bus to save Rock Hudson. Confidential got the pyjama party story from Tab Hunter's agent in exchange for staying quiet about Hudson. The article was so loaded with innuendo it was surprising it didn't damage Hunter more.
As the article says, Hunter was set up for dates with actresses. Mostly they didn't mind because he was known to be a nice guy. Many knew he was gay, which mostly worked in his favour as they knew he wasn't going to pester them to sleep with him.
Hunter knew he wasn't a great actor, or singer, but worked hard to keep fans happy. Until his death he was happy to autograph things for fans.
