That's right, sometimes Western Union will ask you if you know the person. I always said "I don't, but my boss does."
In this scenario, it's probably unnecessary, but it's a good habit to get into anyway. Blaming things on a third party who's not there is a good way to diffuse a tense situation, creating comraderie, and helpful when negotiating.
"Let me check with my wife."
or
"That? Oh, it's in a private trust, I'll have to check with the board."
or
"It's not my decision to make, and the owner can be a real tool."
etc, etc...
You get the idea.
