Not entirely clued in on the Pinkerton reference but I like where you're going. Rothbard, who is probably my favorite Libertarian thinker, put it this way in his "For a New Liberty," (and I'm paraphrasing so please forgive my butchering if you are also a fan)
Would, ship wrecked on a deserted island and tasked with building a new society from scratch, a group of rational people say, "for the security of everyone else and to settle all disputes that may arise, lets give all the weapons to the Jones family, and in good faith, lets hope by granting them this complete and total monopoly on force they use this power wisely and in the best interest of everyone else stranded here." Of course not! Because it doesn't matter how just the Jones's may be, no rational minded group of individuals is naive enough to grant any one group of people a total monopoly over force....
Oh wait...
That's exactly what's happened in every nation there is a standing government.

I remember getting reamed using the online MG/WU services long ago, but the WU in person seemed quite reasonable. At the moment I don't even remember what it cost, which is saying something because I'm pretty money conscious. Anyone, correct if I am wrong.
