I don't think it's a display of power - Putin knows that our Armed Forces are still the best the world has seen since the Romans, he doesn't want a full-on conflict.  I think it's Putin making it clear to Obama that he knows he's won every encounter we've had with Russia, from Hillary's reset button to the debacle in Syria (where thanks to Obama's "red line" and Kerry's impotent "negotiating" Russia now has a permanent Army base).

Whoever the next president is, I certainly hope they pay as much attention to national security / defense as they do to finding ways to circumvent Congress to implement their pet policies.
