I have found that the "right" insomnia med. is a trial and error kind of thing. I am fortunate that my doc prescribes me halcion, no questions asked. It does not put me to sleep but I usually get about 4 hours of good sleep with it and some melatonin. A friend of mine also takes halcion and is asleep within 15 minutes, but has to take trazadone to stay asleep. She can sleep like 7-9 hours. Doc's Ivedal generic ambien is pretty good for those that are successful with ambien. Temezepam, does nothing for me, even the jellies. Restoril is also a big fat zero for me. Because halcion has a short half life if I wake up at 2am and cannot get back to sleep, I can take a half of another halcion and do not feel hung over the next day. But that is my body chemistry. YMMV. Having tried the ambien cr last year, I think my expectations were too high. I just want to be able to sleep thru the nite.
I think my natural body clock prefers being awake at night and asleep during the day. Fortunately or unfortunately, I have to work during the day. Benedryl and all the other otc stuff gives me horrible headaches and hangovers.
When I have back and/or neck muscle spasms, taking some Wallace soma at bedtime has also helped too. No hangover, which is great. I am just too light of a sleeper and anytime I actually sleep through the night is a gift.
I gave up all caffeine and try to be very careful with what I eat and when. Sometimes a favorite snack though, something light, just before bedtime will also help.
I just keep experimenting trying to find the holy grail of a night of solid sleep. Thank you everyone for sharing what works for you. I have never tried the phenibut, but I am going to read up about it to see if it might be something for me to try. All the best, R.

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, and today is a gift; thats why they call it the present.
