I think that as an atypical stimulant modafinil seems to help a lot of people and is well tolerated by most. Someone made a good point about a 50mg dose lowering the side effects. I absolutely agree, and many people can go lower than 50mg and still have a wakeful and productive day. 25mg seemed fine for me, but that's an individual thing.
The half life is a bit too long for my liking. You can sleep and eat unlike with most stimulants, but I have trouble nodding off. So I used to take it at 6am, go back to sleep for half an hour and then wake up as the effects kicked in. Taking it later in the day was an issue for me, but I'm sensitive to stimulants so your mileage may differ.
A curious side effect of modafinil is it can leave you struggling to remember a word. You know that tip-of-the-tongue feeling? Quite a lot of people report that - especially students in exams!
Rockyguy - I really don't know. Adrafinil is the only alternative I knew about - that's the pro-drug for modafinil (if I remember rightly), so takes longer to kick in as it has to be metabolised first and is a bit harsh on the liver.
