World Smile Day



Sometimes all it takes to make the day better is a smile, whether it’s one someone gives to you, or one you share with another.

Little acts of kindness can bring a shining smile to someone who has otherwise had a terrible day, and it can change everything that follows.

Whether it’s just a simple compliment, a cheery hello, or a gift of something small to help brighten their day, World Smile Day encourages you to take action to bring a few more smiles into the world.

History of World Smile Day

It was a simple thing, a circle with a few dots and an upturned curve, but put together Harvey Ball created one of the most iconic symbols the world had ever seen, and it would quickly come to infect everything from graffiti to modern day emoji’s.

We are, of course, talking about the smiley face, arguably the first emoji to enter the world. Harvey would later express concern that the sheer commercialization of his little symbol would strip it of its original intent and meaning.

It was out of this concern that he created World Smile Day, a day devoted to the spreading of simple joy and love to everyone, regardless of race, gender, or geographic location.

Harvey sadly passed from this world in 2001, but the foundation he helped create, the Harvey Ball World Smile Foundation, has carried forth his message of simple peace and love as the sponsor of World Smile Day every year.

Whether you’re simply expressing a bit of silliness or doing a small act of kindness to help someone smile, World Smile Day is your opportunity to help brighten the world and make the world a better place through the simple power of the smile.

Bathtub Day



In a world in which demands on your time are high it is reassuring to know there is one day in the year when you can reclaim the right to relax at your leisure.

Bathtub Day is more than just an excuse to while away the time as you immerse yourself in the warm waters of your bathroom; it is a day to remember and rejoice in the introduction of the bathtub in England in 1828.

How to celebrate this momentous occasion is an individual’s choice but options include turning your bathroom into a mini-spa, complete with scented candles and aromatherapy oils; inviting a partner or friend to share in the bathtub experience; watching a favourite film or television show while bathing; or simply locking the door, turning off the phone and enjoying a rare moment of solitude and peace, with a glass of wine by your side.

Frappe Day



A hallmark of Greek coffee culture from the 1950s onwards, the humbly delicious frappe has earned a yearly celebration.

The frappe is distinguished by being one of the few beverages improved by the use of instant coffee! Supposed, the frappe was created by a tired Nestle sales representative at the Thessaloniki Trade Fair who was beset by caffeine cravings.

It’s often said that creativity flourishes in the face of restraint, and so it was when this beleagured man took some instant coffee, cold water, and ice, and shook his way to an internationally enjoyed drink.

There’s a surprising amount of science behind the frappe’s froth. Spray-dried instant coffee, and its lower oil content are the key to creating long-lasting bubbles.

Freeze-dried instant coffee won’t cut it.

The next time you complain that you can’t get a good coffee anywhere in a country, you might just be right!
