I agree with everyone. The dog was getting the worst part of it. I don't assume to be in the mind of an animal, I'm sure it's real different, but the roo looked shocked, and imagine in some sense it was.
Good for the guy for being there for his dog against a wild animal. There was nothing left in for the kangaroo, so it's not unusual for him or her to turn and leave. No territory dispute, no babes to win over, no reason to slug it out. Guy was lucky the roo didn't rare back on its tail and deliver a kick, which can result in fatal knockouts.
Mainly, bizarre, and not likely to be repeated. Don't mess with that guy's doggie.
