You're son is going to absolutely have the time of his life on this ski vacation! I'm guessing the resort is out west (you mentioned an avalanche). Well the snow conditions are great out there right now! He will be amongst friends and, if he is an avid skier, then he will be on the slopes all day. Tons of exercise and mountain air make for one hungry and tired young boy at the end of the day. Food... long hot shower... text Mom... sleep... more food... and head out to ski all day again. What fun!
It sounds like he is going to a resort that caters to groups of youngsters, so he is going to have a qualified guide nearby at all times to keep him from going out of bounds or skiing trails that may be above his ability. Combine that with the school staff present and your son will be very well supervised to keep him safe.
As for you, if this separation is causing you to have full blown panic attacks, then maybe you do need to visit your GP and seek treatment. You're going to have to deal with this sort of thing on an increasing basis over the next ten years. If, on the other hand, you are anxious primarily because it is your son's first time away on his own, then all you need is a short term cure. I recommend daily cardio exercise and a glass or two of red wine around meal time to unwind.
Don't over-think the ski trip, it's only a week. Focus on the fun your son is most certainly having and use the time to give yourself a break!

Thank you so much for your response :
Im not usually as bad, i think its just the first plane journey he has done without us, i don't care for flying much myself but do it often. He went off this morning at 7am to school all excited and will be taking off in an hour. Im actually in the UK and he is going to the French Alps. I know he will have a fantastic time, and as soon as he is there i will be feeling a lot better. Going out for lunch now with the hubby and our 4 year old daughter, trust me no rest when that little whirl wind is around lol
Thanks to everyone else who responded, think i was just feeling the pressure in the run up to him going.
