gmail,yahoo and other services implemented two way authentication long time ago,specially yahoo this year went down hard on securing mail since they got hacked few years back but didnt mention until this year.
anyway two way authentication allows user to retrieve password in alternative ways secondary email,or sms.some people might not even know they have such function,but if ever changed password or gotten sms or unlock key to alternative source usually them providers keep it as secondary,as opposed to old times where passphrase was means of recovering password or account.
