National Trails Day

”Hiking is the answer. Who cares what the question is?”

There’s a past-time that brings adventure no matter where you do it, and that past-time is hiking. Each year millions of people take to the great outdoors, hiking paths new and old in search of themselves and the love of nature. Trails Day celebrates these intrepid souls and all the unexplored areas of the world where nature still reigns supreme. Hiking is good for the soul, and for your health, getting into the great outdoors has been proven to aid in non-clinical depression and an overall sense of well-being.

History Of Trails Day

This celebration was organized by americanhiking.org with the intent of bringing together all muscle-powered trail sports enthusiasts and raising awareness of them to bring in even more. Thousands of events are hosted all over the country attracting new hikers and old alike, and helping to organize people to take care of the trails so that they can remain open for everyone to enjoy.

There are more than 200,000 miles of trails in America alone, and it takes the combined efforts of enthusiast’s everywhere to keep them active and clear for people to enjoy. Getting out into the wilderness is a great way to find new adventures, with beautiful natural discoveries being made by those who get out there.

Whether you’re hiking, biking, or horseback riding, Trails Day is the perfect opportunity to get back out onto the trails. Trails can vary in range from under a mile to the 2,200 mile long trail that is the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, known among enthusiasts as merely A.T. 31 trail clubs work to maintain this trail, along with multiple partnerships and organizations including the National Park Service and the United States Forest Service.

There’s some fantastic memories for people that center around the classic venue of the drive-in theater. Whether it’s sitting with your sweetheart clinging to you as you watch the latest horror flick rolling on the giant silver screen, or laughing with your family in the back of your pickup truck at the most recent family comedy, there is something amazing about the Drive-In. Drive-In Movie Day celebrates this age old tradition, and helps to bring awareness to the fact that there are still dozens of these facilities open and operating all over the U.S.

History of Drive-In Movie Day

This history of Drive-In Movie Day is literally the history of the Drive-In theater, and how it was born out of one son’s love for his mother. In 1933 Richard Hollingshead noticed a recurring problem with theaters, his mother simply was unable to find a comfortable way to sit in the seats provided by the theaters, but loved the cinema. He started trying to come up with a solution, but reinventing the theater seat just didn’t seem a viable solution.

They were already designed to provide the maximum amount of comfort possible while still packing in as many people as possible. With some time and a lot of experimentation, Richard slowly starting find the best combination of elements for an outdoor movie viewing experience. This was more difficult than it sounded as he dealt with issues like protection from the rain, best placement of cars for maximum viewing ability, and how to get the sound to broadcast in a reliable and enjoyable way. Daunting though the task was, he wasn’t going to allow it to get in the way of his ambition, and in May of 1933 he received a patent and opened his first theater.

After the success of Park-In Theaters, Inc, the idea spread like wildfire, and drive-in theaters were soon appearing in cities all over the U.S. They reigned as king of the movie-going experience ever since, until things started to decline in recent years. Efforts are made to preserve them and keep them in operation, and there are 500* still running all over the US.

1992: Kiss debuted at number six on the Billboard 200 Album Chart with Revenge which was their first album with Eric Singer on drums after longtime drummer Eric Carr passed away the previous November. The album went on to be certified Gold in the U.S.

1987: Bon Jovi peaked at number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart with “Wanted Dead or Alive”, their third and final top ten single off of Slippery When Wet.

1987: Genesis became the first band to spend 52 consecutive weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart with songs from only one album Invisible Touch.

1979: Def Leppard played a concert at Crookes Workingman’s Club in Sheffield, UK. This concert was reviewed by UK magazine Sounds & led to their recording contract.

1972: David Bowie released his fifth album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. The album went on to peak at number 75 on the Billboard 200 Album Chart & went on to become Bowie’s first Gold album in the U.S.

1971: During Frank Zappa’s concert at New York City’s Fillmore East, John Lennon & Yoko Ono joined Zappa onstage. This was Lennon’s first stage appearance since 1969.
