I was prescribed Toprimate (I think that's the generic - I took the brand name drug, but I don't think we can mention those, right?) for migraines and dropped 20 lbs. in 2 months. I had no appetite and carbonated beverage (soda, for example) tasted terrible. The side effects can be bad, but I didn't experience any except for a tin taste in my mouth and a tingling sensation in my fingers and toes, which a vitamin c supplement cured) and tapering after long-term use sux, but it's been 10 years since I last used it and I didn't put the weight back on. My doctor said that the FDA had not approved it as a weight loss drug (it also wasn't prescribed for migraines when I was originally prescribed it, but subsequently has been) but he has prescribed it off-label for weight loss. Unless you have migraines and aren't just looking for a weight loss drug, I wouldn't recommend it. It can make you forget what you are saying, stumble over words, and just sound plain "dopey," hence it's nickname, which I can't say without giving away the brand name.
