Kindness should be encouraged and graciously accepted.
It is in this way that we can assist and serve others.

That’s a good example of why pride is one of the deadly sins...affecting everyone around them negatively.

Discouraging kindness...what a way to go through life.  Especially bothersome because an “old” lady should be in the know.

I have to respectfully disagree with that. There's a difference between hubris and pride, and i think the latter is admirable. The old woman declined help not because of excessive self-confidence, but pride. And the foundation of her pride is her self-sufficientcy; she would rather have less but have earned it herself. 

And, to be fair, she did say thank you.
