National Meteor Watch Day

A meteor or “shooting star” is the visible streak of light from a heated and glowing meteoroid falling through the Earth’s atmosphere; it is also call a “shooting star”.

Legend has it that if you wished upon a shooting star the wish would come true. It is believed to have originated in Greece, when a Greek astronomer Ptolemy, around AD 127-151, wrote that the Gods occasionally, out of curiosity, peer down at the Earth from between the spheres. When this happened stars sometimes slip through the gap, becoming visible as shooting stars.

It was though that because the Gods were already looking at us, they would be more receptive to any wishes we made!

Did you know that these shooting stars are actually very small? The size of the meteoroid can vary the size of a closed fist to the size of a pebble.

Thousands of meteoroids enter the Earth’s atmosphere on a daily basis, but very few of them actually reach the surface; but when they do, they are called “meteorites.”

To celebrate Meteor Watch Day, hope for clear skies and spend some time star-gazing. Or why not find out when the next meteor shower is going to take place.

Remember if you see a shooting start make a wish, the Gods may answer it.

Social Media Day

[Image: 629e37e69c1b4cf5b898d31991140d74social-media-day.jpg]

Social Media Day was launched by the popular website Mashable back in 2010, and often sees fans of the site going to real life meetups.

Social media seems to be everywhere these days. Though the days of social media pioneer Myspace are now long gone, we’re constantly hearing about trending topics on Twitter, laughing at social media fails and many people are obsessive about keeping up with their Facebook news feed.

Even if Facebook and Twitter aren’t for you, there’s still blogging, Vine, Snapchat and even LinkedIn, among many others. Even businesses have recognised the value of social media for connecting with customers and selling their product, as well as quickly updating users about problems affecting their service.

Social media has become a major factor in the world. For many of us, it is how we keep up with what our friends are up to, even if they’re on the other side of the planet. It has also played a big part in world events. Twitter was used to organise protests and report on events during the Arab Spring, for example.

On a more shallow note, Twitter is a great way to keep up with what your favourite celebrities are up to – as long as they don’t just use it to Instagram pictures of their lunch!

If we’re honest, most of us use social media for less than upright purposes ourselves. We use it to show off our holidays and what adventures we have planned for the weekend.

Almost everyone presents an idealised version of themselves on social media, whether by detagging unflattering photos or implying their life is more exciting and glamorous than it really is. Never compare yourself negatively to your friends on social media as you’re only seeing what they want you to see!

Build a Scarecrow Day

Build a Scarecrow Day is a unique and fun festival that is celebrated each year in the USA on the first Saturday in July.

Scarecrows are special human shaped figures that are created by farmers to scare the birds away from their crows. They are traditionally made from straw and covered with old clothes.

After they have been completed, these scarecrows are set in fields.

On this special day people gather to build scarecrows and celebrate the coming of autumn. While this festival has been celebrated in the USA for more than a century, it is now gaining international appeal. In fact, Build a Scarecrow Day has been celebrated in rural parts of the United Kingdom since 1990.

This is a good opportunity for members of the community to get together and celebrate the changing of the seasons in a unique way.

Competitions are even held to see who can make the best scarecrow.

Stay Out of the Sun Day

Everybody loves a sunny day, but in the height of summer it’s easy to get dehydrated, sunburnt and worse. Stay Out Of The Sun Day is about looking after yourself by taking a day away from the sun and finding some nice, relaxing shade – and if you are out and about, make sure you’ve got sun cream, plenty of water and some shade!

Compliment Your Mirror Day

Sometimes we just don’t feel at our best, and in fact for some of us that ‘sometimes’ is every day.

When you’ve got a big day coming or a challenge ahead, or are just feeling down in the dumps, it may be time to Compliment Your Mirror.

Day after day we hear things that can tear down our personality and self-confidence, Compliment Your Mirror Day is your reminder to show yourself a little love and remind yourself just how awesome you are. Then keep doing it day after day!

Depression and broken self-esteem are some of the most dangerous things to leave untreated and unacknowledged. Every year there are people who succumb to these horrible events, and while complimenting yourself in the mirror isn’t a panacea for these dangerous things, it can at least begin the process of building your feeling of self-worth through self-talk.

It’s important to know that Compliment Your Mirror Day doesn’t just have to do with your physical, outer beauty, such a thing is ephemeral and certainly won’t last into your old age. But the person you are and how you approach the world certainly will, in fact it’s the only thing you’ll keep until your last days.

So Compliment Your Mirror Day means you need to recognize all of your inner strengths and inner beauties.

Mirrors have been around for a long time, time out of mind in fact, and the first ones were made of Obsidian, if you don’t count reflecting bowls as mirrors. They’ve always been recognized as having magical properties, and one of those magical properties involved making statements of intent into them and knowing they’d come true.

Compliment Your Mirror Day is your day to cast a spell over yourself by telling yourself how awesome you really are.

America's Independence Day

Independence Day of the United States, also referred to as the Fourth of July or July Fourth in the U.S., is a federal holiday commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, by the Continental Congress declaring that the thirteen American colonies regarded themselves as a new nation, the United States of America, and no longer part of the British Empire.

Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions, and political speeches and ceremonies, in addition to various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States.

Independence Day is the National Day of the United States.

National Barbecued Spareribs Day

"Spare ribs (also called spareribs) are a variety of pork ribs, cooked and eaten in various cuisines around the world.

They are the most inexpensive cut of pork ribs.

They are a long cut from the lower portion of the pig, specifically the belly and breastbone, behind the shoulder, and include 11 to 13 long bones. There is a covering of meat on top of the bones as well as between them."

Terminology

The origin of the term "spare ribs" is not known although several folk definitions exist.

Spare ribs are also popular in Chinese and American Chinese cuisine, they are generally called paigu (Chinese: 排骨; pinyin: páigǔ; Cantonese: paai4 gwat1; literally "row of bones").

When removed from the bone and roasted, or when roasted to a red color, they are called char siu (叉燒).

In County Cork, Ireland, spare ribs are boiled and eaten with potatoes and turnips.

This dish is called bodice locally.

National Apple Turnover Day

Every year in the United States, on the fifth day of the month of July, lovers of fruit-stuffed pastries all over the country have an excuse to indulge in a decadent breakfast treat. This is because National Apple Turnover Day falls on this date, and offers an opportunity to nosh on an apple turnover and spread awareness of this classic, fluffy, pan fried sweet.

Apple turnovers may be enjoyed for breakfast, brunch or as a snack. The turnovers have a shelf life of about 4 days, and are best if frozen immediately (rather than being stored in the refrigerator). Frozen apple turnovers are best if eaten with 6 months of freezing.

Apples themselves are said to have originated in the Tien Shan mountain range in Northwestern China, and they have been beloved by ancient rulers such as Ramses II and Ramses III, who presented them as offerings to the god Ra. The oldest accounts of turnovers date back to England and America in the mid to late 18th century.

International Kissing Day

There are as many types of kiss as there are people to pucker up, and who doesn’t love a good kiss?

Whether it’s a quick friendly peck on the cheek between friends, or a long, passionate tongue-lashing between new partners, International Kissing Day celebrates this most enjoyable of activities and the part it plays in cultures throughout the world.

If you haven’t shown your partner just how much you enjoy them, maybe International Kissing Day is your chance to remind them with a toe-curling kiss!

History of International Kissing Day

International Kissing Day was established in 2006 to focus on the kissing that takes place between lovers, and to celebrate the place it holds in our society.

One of the most surprising things about this holiday is the research that revealed that 5% of people over the age of 45 are locking lips at least 31 times a week!

Who would have thought that old fires burn so hot?

Events are organized all over to celebrate International Kissing Day, with events for those who have lovers, and those who are looking for them.

Kiss-in’s let you test drive a potential dates lips before you ever hook up with them for an actual date, and kissing classes help you learn how to become an amazing kisser.

But romantic kissing isn’t the only place that kissing happens in our culture and society. Among the high society, it’s not at all unusual to greet with a kiss on each cheek, a tradition that heralds back to the Old World.

Young children frequently get kisses from their loving parents, though it’s something that tends to fade as children get older.

Over all, kissing has played an important role in social bonding since time out of mind, and International Kissing Day celebrates them all!

And

National Fried Chicken Day

To add more pizzazz to the day, coat the legendary southern food in spices and yell “Yeehaw!”

Cover the chicken with a mixture of cayenne pepper, garlic powder and paprika to put the spring back in your step.

A little hot sauce?

Sure, let’s go all out! Serve the mouth- watering fried food with chicken gravy to up the yum-factor even more. Pair the succulent bird with waffles for a classic combo. Or, why not make chicken the star of the show and add a tasty side dish? Lip-smacking sides include buttermilk biscuits, cold potato salad or coleslaw.

With fried chicken on the plate, the taste is sure to taste clucking good!
