Hi- I'm new here. I did not see a place to post introductions. So I am reaching out in hopes to connect with like minded folks to find what I am looking for.
I understand the requirements are 50 posts in 10 days (5 posts per day) to reach a higher status to enjoy the complete content of this site. Is this correct?
I am old school and I do not wish sites like this to vanish. Please post!

My doggie is a bit spoiled but loves me more than any human even my spouse. Unconditionally. I hope things get better for you.

I am sorry that things that have happened to you are making you distressed. Wishing you well! I don't visit often enough but I really like this forum.

well i probably loved my dog and cats equally if not more to the love i had for men. they can be rat bastards. i was blessed with my last man. but he died without warning and i was put in here.

gave my cat to my good sister.

but i would love to have pets again. not allowed. sighs. treasure what u have whilst u have it. seriously one never knows when people may die suddenly and the damn state steps in to take monies and control one.

seriously. if u enjoy ur life and ur freedom and ur loved ones, tell them daily or show them as one never knows when things can dramatically change.

have a glorious and peaceful night and always show ur loved ones, be it people or animals, that they are loved big time. and forever and alway. it cannot hurt.

I have fond memories of all my dogs(cat allergy for years until I was 16) Must of out grew it. I had a beautiful F2 Savannah cat for 7 years. I live in a state that made them illegal. I was allowed to keep her but had to fill out all sorts of paper work and the requirements were a lot and you had to get them done quickly. I will always love that amazing absolutely impressive animal. I now have German Shepherds and love them the same.

Spiritual growth. I convinced myself, was an ideal not meant
for me to achieve. To the few who guided me to realize this not be true.

So, I’m writing this saga because German Shepherds were mentioned earlier and this involves medication adverse effects. I also would like to point out that this isn’t our first GSD. We have had many over the past 25 years. And some of those bitches (literally!) we TOUGH dogs!

We’ve had a really rough 6 weeks or so here. Out of nowhere our beautiful, kind soul of a German Shepherd bit Mr Froggy. It was bad, really bad. We had to travel several hours to a specialist for surgery on his eye & he had more than 20 stitches in his scalp. We both love this dog & he loves us as well! Luckily for us all of his shots are up to date so the Towne’s not impound him. Mr Froggy is doing great, no lasting effects on his vision & very little scarring around the eye. He will have 2 pretty good ones on his scalp though.

We were so baffled by this whole incident we didn’t know what to do!  I called his breeder immediately & she was & is absolutely amazing. Even with her own life in the middle of a huge upheaval she dropped everything to help us. First, by taking our dog so that we could deal with the medical side of things & then allowing us the space & time with her full support, to handle the mental aspect that goes with something like this.

We have been researching madly to try to figure this out & while discussing this with dog professionals I heard a few things over & over. And dog people never agree on anything! The saying goes “Ask 2 dog trainers a question & you’ll get 3 opinions.” But I kept hearing, first a dramatic inhale when I told them we had taken him to the vet & he had all of his vaccines. They all asked if I meant all at once & exactly which ones. I said yes, he was given all at once, & which ones. They were all surprised at that because it was 5 or 6 vaccines & should have been split to avoid making the dog feel like crap & to know what vaccine they reacted to if they have a bad reaction. And second, a huge reaction when I said that he was also positive for Lyme & being treated with doxycycline.

Apparently, a rare but serious side effect of doxycycline is changes in behavior, most commonly aggression. I had never heard this before, I’d love any of your experiences. We continued to discuss everything else going on in our lives (which isn’t much) with dog trainers & breeders we know to try to see if & where WE may have been wrong. We got a lot of good info & after a lot of soul searching and planning we are bringing him home this week. We have a lot of work ahead as a family to rebuild the trust on both sides. And I now know a lot more about ways to advocate for my dog at the vet!

So, to make this novel a little shorter, our poor dog was sick, given a huge vaccine load & sent off without a thought of how he might react to all of this. He felt like crap & he then had a bad reaction to the doxycycline he made a terrible life choice in a minuscule moment and we have all been dealing with the fallout. Luckily, we do have support from his breeder, who will work with us personally, as well as many other friends who will answer any questions we have. And we have worked out a good plan for moving forward. I just really wish I’d had the info about doxycycline & aggression earlier. It would have changed SO much!

Lyme was one of the vaccines he got that day, which he had not had previously. I don’t know if that made a difference since he was already infected just not showing symptoms.

Cheers & thanks for reading!
