Great last two days' entries Ice.  I've heard stories of how smart the octopus appears to be and it's interesting what you said.  That octo is the most colorful of any I've seen.  Also, I love Pierogis.

I know most people here are also dedicated followers of the postal system.  Groupies.

Glad to it was "amber ale" shown as the beer.  No offense to those out there who like it, but that IPA pale ale, make me want  beer when I drink it, and it floods the shelves.  I like something with body, an al dente beer with body to it full of vitamins and minerals.

Jackson Browne, the angel of light from LA, while Warren Zevon was the dark angel.  Between the two of them some of the most haunting lyrics and innovative styles in rock history.   "Running on Empty", etc., some of the best, used to listen to him in a van on 8 track and pick up hitchhikers heading toward the coast from Fresno.

Ada Lovelace Day



Ada Lovelace Day was created to celebrate one of the first computer programmers. As the daughter of the poet Lord Byron, Augusta Ada Byron, was brought up by her mother, Annabella, after he passed.

Her mother feared that she would inherit her father’s poetic temperament, and gave Ada a strict upbringing of logic, science and mathematics.

Ada became fascinated with mechanisms and designed steam flying machines, poring over the scientific magazines of the time and embracing the British Industrial revolution.

In 1833, Ada Lovelace was introduced to Charles Babbage whom she helped to develop a device called The Analytical Engine; an early predecessor of the modern computer.

Lovelace and Babbage worked together closely for many years in order to refine the Engine. Ada found relative fame in 1842 when she expanded on an article by an Italian mathematician, in which she elaborated on the use of machines through the manipulation of symbols.

Although Babbage had sketched out programs before, Lovelace’s were the most elaborate and complete, and the first to be published; so she is often referred to as “the first computer programmer”.

Ada Lovelace died of cancer at the age of 36 a few short years after the publication of “Sketch of the Analytical Engine, with Notes from the Translator”.

The Analytical Engine remained a vision for many but until Ada’s notes inspired Alan Turing to work on the first modern computers in the 1940’s.

Her passion and vision for technology have made her a powerful symbol for women in the modern world of technology.

World Sight Day



World Sight Day is a special annual day of awareness that is celebrated around the world each year in order to focus on blindness and vision impairment.

This day was created by the World Health Organization in collaboration with the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness and awareness is spread through a large number of different events.

A large number of organisations around the world have been involved with World Sight Day for many years.

Some people choose to show their support by planting trees, while other people get involved by submitting a photograph that will be used to create an international photograph montage focusing on the theme of blindness.

Other activities that take place on this day include special fund raising walks to help cover the costs of operations, book readings for the blind and a number of booklets and posters that are created in order to raise awareness of the issue.

No Bra Day!



Every year hundreds of thousands new cases of breast cancer occur in the United States alone, with approximately 250,000 of them being invasive forms of breast cancer, and an additional 2,600 cases being found in men.

No Bra Day encourages women everywhere to go without their bra to raise awareness for breast cancer and the challenges that those with it faces. If you know someone who has been affected by Breast Cancer or just want to help continue the fight against it, No Bra Day is an opportunity to help those around you know that the fight is ongoing!

History of No Bra Day

No Bra Day was established to both raise awareness of breast cancer and its prevalence in today’s society, as well as to drive opportunities for fund-raising to help keep the research moving.

1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lives and have to battle a disease that can, at worst, be lethal.

But outside of just its lethality, it also has the possibility of impacting a woman’s view of herself, her ability to breastfeed, and can result in surgeries that include mastectomies.

Breasts are of the primary identifiers of what makes a woman, visually, a woman, and having to have them removed in the fight against breast cancer can lead to self-image issues and depression.

So why is it that women everywhere choose not to wear a bra to raise awareness of this horrible disease?

Women who have been through a battle with breast cancer often have to wear a prosthesis to hide the fact that they’ve had a breast or breasts removed, and are unable to go without a bra as a result.

By spending the day without a bra you can raise awareness and help to prevent other women from having to go through this experience.

I had a very good friend who was blind.  He was real smart, taught psychology, and had an academic book published on the psychology of blindness.  He as a young person could see, but was blind most of his life.  He was self sufficient, but the blind are always vulnerable.  He had a nutz ex wife that would push him into a wall when she was angry.  The blind are always susceptible to mistreatment by care givers.  I learned that they take your arm to follow, as  opposed to you taking their hand or arm and leading.  If we watched a movie on TV, I would include commentary on graphic sequences of the film that were cogent to the story.  When we went out to eat, I could tell him what was where on his plate by using a clock reference, as in peas at 3 o'clock, etc.  The blind live and can thrive in "our" world,  but it is different in many ways.

Vet Nurse Day



When you think of a nurse, what do you think of? The traditional white nurses uniform with the red cross on it? (They don’t dress that way anymore, in fact, we’re not certain they ever did) What about the man or woman wearing the scrubs running around the hospital taking your vitals?

There are other nurses that aren’t often considered, and Vet Nurse Day reminds us to take some time to remember and honor those men and women who work at our veterinarian’s office every day to take care of those precious furred, feathered, and scaled members of our families.

History of Vet Nurse Day Veterinary

Nurse Day was established to raise awareness of those men and women who work alongside the veterinarians every day to help heal, comfort, and protect our pets.

Whether they’re working in the field on large animals like horses and cattle, or carefully handling the smallest of pets like mice or lizards, they’re a vitally important part of the care our pets receive.

So what exactly does a veterinary nurse do?

Veterinary nurses are your first contact in the office when it comes time for care, they speak to you about what issues are facing your pets, and help to prepare them for treatment, keeping them calm and comfortable. When your pet has to stay at the facility, the Vet Nurse is the one who makes sure their bandages are changed, they’re fed and watered, and that they get a little time spent with love and attention so they aren’t lonely during their stay.

Even more importantly, they work with the vet during the operations to make sure that everything goes smoothly.

In short, they’re just as important to your pet’s welfare and happiness during treatment as the vet themselves!

That’s why Vet Nurse Day was established to celebrate and thank these incredible members of your veterinary staff.

The image of the spinning top is a powerful one, the image of an object only kept in place by motion and precarious laws of physics.

History of International Top Spinning Day

International Top Spinning Day was established by the Spinning Top and Yo-Yo Museum of Burlington, Wisconsin, both to spread awareness of the joy that is the spinning top, and the fact that the World itself is, in essence, a spinning top, complete with the characteristic wobble.

Tops have a long and august history in the world, and have appeared in every culture with significance ranging from spiritual to a simple childhood toy.

Just how old is the spinning top?

It has been recognized as one of the oldest recognizable toys by archaeologists, being found in multiple cultures and even deep in the oldest sites.

There are multiple types of tops, and the principles that govern them are even used in some of our most advanced technologies (ever heard of a gyroscope? It’s function is based on the same principles that govern the behavior of a top). There are battling tops and gambling tops, and some of those gambling tops are even used for religious purposes.

Take, for example, the Dreidel of Jewish faith, a top used for gambling and, by tradition, to hide the fact that they were studying the Torah during times of persecution.

Thanks for reminding me of tops, Ice. The one shown was not the typical top of my boyhood.  The pictured top is spun with two hands sometimes, like you were trying to start a fire with a straight stick on a prepared piece of wood.  The tops I remember vied with yo-you s as toys. Looked like this: 

   

The cord is shown.  The round piece would be slipped on the middle finger and the cord would be attached to it. Then the cord would be wrapped around the "top" and "thrown" slickly to a hard surface where it would spin.  You could also have top fights, where one guy would throw his top and try to knock another top off kilter.  Great fun.
