Dr. Seuss Day
We truly love him in a house.
We truly love him with a mouse.
We truly love him here or there.
We truly love him anywhere.
We truly love the silly goose.
We truly love old Dr. Seuss!
Today is Dr. Seuss Day, a full twenty-four hours to make a mess with the Cat in the Hat, dance around with the Fox in Sox, hear a Who with Horton, count the red and blue fish, help the Grinch see the error of his ways, and listen to Sam I Am’s friend complain about his dish of green eggs and ham, the ungrateful hairball!
Theodor Seuss Geisel, commonly known by his pen name Dr. Seuss, was a writer, poet and cartoonist. Though best known as a children’s author (he released a whopping forty-six books for tykes), his career also saw him work as an illustrator for advertising campaigns and a political cartoonist during the Second World War.
He was also a true perfectionist, known to discard 95% of his material before settling on a theme for a new book, sometimes spending up to a year writing a single story, and preferring payment upon completion, rather than in advance.
March 2nd is a celebration of his life and works, as it was on this day in 1904 that he entered the world. Having lived eighty-seven years and made an incredible impact on numerous generations, he died in 1991 at his home in La Jolla, California.
His many bizarre, colorful and zany tales are still cherished by young and old alike, and, having been translated into more than twenty languages, are read all across the world every single day.
If you fancy paying a fitting tribute, we recommend dressing up with a friend as Thing 1 and Thing 2.
All you need are blue wigs and red jumpsuits.
Oh, and boundless energy!
And
Banana Cream Pie Day
On March 2nd every year, it’s time to celebrate cream pie – banana cream pie, to be precise. On this day, pie lovers in the United States raise a spoon to one of the most popular sweet treats in the country. And if you want to join in with your own banana cream pie, don’t worry – there’s no law that says you have to share!
The History of Banana Cream Pie Day
A cream pie is very much what its name suggests – if you buy one or make one, you’ll usually be getting a thin shortcrust pastry filled past the crust with thick creamy custard. On top is usually a thick layer of whipped cream, and depending on the chef it might be topped with coconut, nuts, or dusted with sugar or chocolate.
The creamy custard pudding which makes up its center is similar to creme patisserie, the main part of many French tarts. It’s usually made from milk, flour, cream and eggs and has a soft, smooth consistency that helps give creampie its wobbly appearance.
You’ve probably seen cream pies been used as a comedy gimmick by clowns, and in cartoons and kids shows, where getting a pie in the face is a time-honored way of getting some laughs. Although usually when used on TV, a cream pie will be a plate of whipped cream, without any bananas in there at all!
The English version of banana cream pie is called ‘banoffee’ pie, being a portmanteau of ‘banana’ and ‘toffee’. The recipe for this desert is much richer than its American counterpart, calling for lashings of condensed milk and toffee and often served with ice cream.

World Wildlife Day
The World is full of amazing creatures from every possible medium. From the birds of the air to the majestic whales of the sea, wildlife abounds in the most unusual and unexpected places. Wildlife benefits us in many ways, and has since time out of mind. World Wildlife day is a day to remind us of our responsibilities to our world and the lifeforms we share it with.
History of World Wildlife Day
On March 3rd, 1973 the United Nations General Assembly took a stand against to protect Endangered Species throughout the world. Whether plant or animal, the importance of these species in every area of human life, from culinary to medical, could not be understated. At this time hundreds of endangered species were being threatened every year, and extinction was at a staggeringly high rate. CITES was put into place (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) to ensure that the world did not continue to hemorrhage species that would never be seen from again.
On December 20th, 2013 another step was taken to help spread awareness of the fragility of endangered species in the world. At its 68th session, the UN declared that each year World Wildlife Day would be dedicated to a new purpose and idea to help keep people abreast of the changing nature of our world, and the treasures we stand to lose from the animal and plant kingdom if we don’t take care.
And
International Irish Whiskey Day
On the 27th of March every year, it’s time to celebrate one of the most popular and historical alcoholic spirits out there. Whiskey has been filling the glasses of new and seasoned drinkers alike for generations, and for some aficionados, it’s a serious business.
For some, it’s better when mixed with a little soda, or fruit juice, while others assert that the best and only way to drink whiskey is to have it plain and over the rocks – or ice if you aren’t down with the lingo. Whether you’re new to the charms of this sophisticated spirit or you’ve been enjoying it for years, make today a day to learn about one of the world’s favorite tipples.
The History of International Whiskey Day
International Whiskey Day was announced for the first time back in 2008, first started in 2009, and is meant to observe Whiskey from Scotland, Canada, Japan, Ireland, and America. In addition, the day keeps us mindful of Parkinson’s Disease, in honor of the British writer Michael Jackson who suffered with the disease before his death in 2007.
Jackson was a real aficionado of whiskey, being the author of a large number of books about the drink, with his book ‘Michael Jackson’s Malt Whisky Companion’ being one of the best-selling books on whiskey in the world.
To honor the whiskey expert, who incidentally also knew a thing or two about beers, whiskey fans worldwide raise a glass of the drink to celebrate the man’s life and, of course, the malty spirit itself.
And
National Anthem Day
No matter what nation you hail from, there’s a song that everyone knows, and that touches the heart of every member of your country from young to old. That song is your National Anthem, and it speaks of culture and history, and often the very identity of your nation. In many nations the song is song every morning by school children, and in places like America it is actually sung to open certain sporting events, especially American Football. National Anthem Day is here to celebrate the National Anthems of the world, from the obscure and forgotten to the ones that ring out every day.
History of National Anthem Day
The origin of National Anthem Day is actually in America, where Francis Scott Key wrote the anthem for that fledgling nation while Fort McHenry was under assault by British forces. He himself was in the bay on a military vessel, and saw the entire assault happen. It is from these events that some of the key imagery in the song originated, the ‘bombs bursting in air’. Of course, his time as a military man lent more to the tune itself, which was an old tavern song popular in the day.
Some nations, such as England, don’t actually have an official national anthem. Strange as this may seem, the people of the nation have adopted a song as their anthem. In the places where most national anthems would stand in, the song “God Save The Queen” is used, and that’s why you’ll hear it sung during sporting events and official events. Of course the UK is a tricky devil in this case, given that it actually comprises not one but three Kingdoms, and each has its own anthem of preference.

Toy Soldier Day
Although Toy Soldier Day may not be as famous of an occasion as Christmas or Halloween, countless fans of stage persona Dr. Steel celebrate the event each and every year. However, its name is a bit deceiving. As opposed to collecting or displaying plastic toys or replicas, Toy Soldier Day is actually intended to unite fans of various role-playing activities. Ranging from nurses to scouts (and yes, soldiers), one of the primary goals is to collaborate, compare and share costume ideas.
Never heard of it? No problem!
This is the perfect day to broaden your entertainment horizons a bit and find out new ways to have some fun with life!
The History of Toy Soldier Day
The Army of Toy Soldiers originally started as the fan club of a talented street performer, musician and internet personality known as Dr. Steel. Dr. Steel started his career in 1999 in Los Angeles, where he put on shows combining puppetry and video projections to help his audience better understnd the meanings of his steampunk songs. Later on, Dr. Steel moved on to performing in clubs and also released several CDs. Dr. Steel’s stage persona was very original—he portrayed himself as a mad scientist determined to take over the world and become its Emperor, which was also the reason why he needed The Army of Toy Soldiers.
The Toy Soldier Army is made up of four regiments: toy soldiers, nurses, toy scouts and engineers, and is currently led by the 2 admins of the website, who reside in the United States and the United Kingdom. The Army’s mission is to promote Dr. Steel’s philosophy of transhumanism, freedom of thought, and subjective reality, which can be done by the so-called “invasions” it sometimes makes—it is not uncommon for groups of these toy soldiers to “invade” theme parks around the world dressed in their full regalia. Toy Soldiers are also famous for doing charity work in uniform, such as clothing and toy drives for the less fortunate.
And
Marching Band Day
Meant as a day to build awareness around the ‘marching arts’, Marching Band Day is all about those upbeat, often cheerful bands which also happen to be moving around while playing.
Taking place on March 4th (‘march forth’ – get it?) this day is for all band geeks out there to celebrate one of the most musical of past-times.
The History of Marching Band Day
For a good few years now, there’s been a petition active in the USA to make March the 4th the official National Marching Band Day – but marching bands themselves have been around for donkey’s years. A marching band is always easy to spot even if you don’t hear them first, as they usually have a matching uniform – most commonly of a military style – and often have members who don’t carry instruments but use flags and other props to add action to the music. These are called a colorguard and accompany most marching bands which you will see.
The first marching bands appeared in the 1800s by all accounts. They originated from groups of traveling musicians who would perform at festivals centuries ago, and as time went on they would become the foundation for military bands. And military bands are where marching bands directly evolved from. Marching bands in the USA are known mostly for performing at sports events – namely, American football matches. The oldest recorded marching band was the Notre Dame Marching Band, which was started up in 1845.
One of the most spectacular things about marching bands is the formation – back when they started up, the band might form the initials of the teams that were to play that day. But in modern times, the huge crowds that events like the Superbowl pulls together, call for something special – video games, film scenes, complex patterns – marching bands make their performance even more special by stepping out in a formation that makes up recognizable shapes when viewed from above.

Absinthe Day
Celebrated by artists and aristocrats alike for centuries, absinthe has long been the drink of choice for the creative type; also known as The Green Goddess, The Green Lady or The Green Fairy, the drink used to be a favorite among artists and writers due to it supposedly helping their creative flow.
National Absinthe Day aims to celebrate the strong alcoholic drink by observing its history and legacy, as well as enjoying a couple of sips of its strong green charm.
The History of Absinthe Day
Just exactly when absinthe was first distilled is unclear. Created using wormwood extracts and leaves, the drink may have roots in remedies used by the ancient Greeks. However, according to legend, absinthe first came about as a cure-all remedy patented by Dr. Pierre Orginaire, in around the year 1972.
The recipe would continue to be sold as a medicinal elixir in the following years, and in 1797 the first absinthe distillery appeared in Couvet, Switzerland. The makers, known then as Pernod Fils, would sell the most popular brand of absinthe right up until 1914, which was when the drink was banned in France.
French troops in the 1840s would be given absinthe as a preventative for malaria, and when they came home brought their taste for the drink. Eventually, absinthe would become popular among all social classes, and mass production allowed the price to fall and saw absinthe become one of the most drunk beverages in France.
However, its especially high alcohol content would be one of the reasons it was banned in a number of countries in the early 1900s. Believed to be a drink which caused its drinkers to cause trouble among society, mainly by being violent and disorderly, it would not start to be drunk widely again until the 1990s.
And
Multiple Personality Day
There are many who would say that your personality is what most defines you. But what about if you have lots of them? Which one would you most identify as? Would any of the personalities dislike the others? Would you tell your friends about your struggles, or would you keep it to yourself?
Multiple Personality Day was created to highlight its namesake disorder, and raise awareness of its affect on the day to day life of those who suffer from it. And this goes deeper that just being a bit moody now and again, and being your normal self later – this is about having totally different, clearly apparent personalities which have their own identities and own ways of interacting with their environment.
The History of Multiple Personality Day
Exactly when this day started appearing in the calendar is unknown – however, the reasons behind it are very clear. Multiple personality disorder is also known as dissociative identity disorder, a medical condition which through the years has been brought more and more prominently into the medical field.
To be diagnosed with dissociate identity disorder, you’d need to be displaying at least two different personalities, any of which can ‘take control’ of you at any given time. It is not uncommon for, when one personality takes over, for another to entirely forget what you were up to when the first one was active. It’s no wonder that such a condition is very difficult for sufferers to cope with.
It’s incredible to try and understand, but while some sufferers have two or three personalities, others can have ten, twenty, thirty personalities. Some people with the disorder reportedly have upwards of 90 personalities, with one often being dominant while switching between the others at least a few times a day.

National White Chocolate Cheesecake Day
What can make cheesecake even better? Making it from chocolate, of course! There’s no better dish to dedicate a day to celebrating – especially if that involves eating it. Whoever decided to start White Chocolate Cheesecake Day must have been a big fan of this tasty dessert.
While you might expect cheesecake recipes to have originated in the 20th Century, you’d be wrong. A form of cheesecake actually dates back to the Ancient Greeks and seems to have been on offer at the first Olympic Games in 776 BC! The recipe spread from there and has been refined along the way, especially with the use of cream cheese rather than the flour, honey and cheese ingredients of the earliest version.
There are hundreds of variations of White Chocolate Cheesecake recipes, so you’ll be sure to find the perfect dessert. Alternatively, celebrate the day by making up your own version!
And
National Frozen Food Day
While you might expect Frozen Food Day to be the invention of a manufacturer of frozen food, it was actually inaugurated by US President Ronald Reagan in 1984! Food frozen slowly is not very tasty when defrosted, but ‘flash’ frozen food – the technique of freezing food quickly – keeps the food as fresh and delicious as it was when it was first frozen. The flash freezing technique was developed by none other than Clarence Birdseye, inspired by seeing Inuit eating thawed fish which had been frozen months earlier. You might recognise the Birdseye name from the frozen food section!
Nowadays frozen food is a lifeline to many busy cooks, whether it is used for certain ingredients, such as frozen vegetables or the whole dish. We all have days when we’re tired and having a full meal in the freezer is so much easier than actually having to cook!

National Be Heard Day
Small businesses have many challenges to be successful. It can be an exciting experience to start a business and do something that you love. The reality comes in getting your message out and bring the paying customers in. Getting marketing advice can be an expensive proposition and every penny counts to a small business.
Be Heard Day is the day to make things a little easier!
History of Be Heard Day
The task of getting the message of a small business through all the noise of bigger companies and their marketing machines could be described as herculean. Local and small businesses are sometimes not even noticed by those who live near them because of this. Marketing and Business Strategist Shannon Cherry saw this problem and decided to do something about it. She created Be Heard Day in 2004 and since then has been making a difference to many small business owners.
Her goal for Be Heard Day reportedly is to make it a “give away day”, a day where she and other business and marketing professionals offer their services and knowledge for free. How amazing this that? Being able to get advice from these professionals could mean the difference between complete failure or shinning success for some small businesses!
And
Crown Roast of Pork Day
Culinary holidays just don’t get more impressive than Crown Roast of Pork Day! You know the dish, it’s the one where the ribs are stood up to form a circle with the little tiny hats on the ends. It’s time to get the courage to give it a go, and why not, a whole day has been set aside!
History of Crown Roast of Pork Day
The pig is one of the oldest forms of livestock since approximately 5000 BC! It’s relative was the wild boar. It was domesticated in the East and to this day is the most eaten meat in the world. There has been more to the pig through the years other than its meat as well. Pigs have very sensitive noses and are able to sniff out truffles which are a very expensive fungus used in gourmet cooking. They also helped with the farming by breaking up the soil that was to be plowed.
Knowing that this animal has been around through so much history gives us an idea how long people have been creatively cooking pork. You can easily picture an impressive crown roast of pork being presented on a royal table. Perhaps the “crown” was a nod to that idea. You can say that people have been celebrating Crown Roast of Pork Day for hundreds of years.
And
National Cereal Day
How do you start your morning?
If you are like almost half of the people in the United States of America, you are enjoying a bowl of cereal to fuel your morning! Cereal Day was created to shine a light on this favorite breakfast food. Do you know the history of cereal or do you suppose that it was always the sweet creation that we find in the supermarket aisles?
History of Cereal Day
Cereal got its start in the 1800’s as an unappetizing and difficult to digest health food. Made of nuggets of bran it was thought to regulate what was a meat heavy diet. Most American’s at this time ate mostly pork and beef. The diet of the time was very unhealthy and those who wanted to improve society thought that they could make changes in diet that would bring spiritual and social change as well.
Dr. James Caleb invented the bran nuggets to help the patrons of his sanitarium. A sanitarium was a place where people would go to recover from illness or injury or to partake of restorative spa treatments. There was a spiritual side to being at the sanitarium as well and Dr. Caleb hosted several prominent people including the woman who created the Seventh Day Adventist religion.
Dr. John Kellogg took an interest in health foods for his patients. He created granola and with his brothers help created many other meatless breakfast foods. They even came across the method that let wheat flake instead of being a nugget and corn flakes were born!
It wasn’t until 1939 that cereal would take on the sweetness that we are familiar with today. The sweet creation was called Ranger Joe Popped Wheat Honnie and was marketed towards children.
You could say that the rest is history!
From that moment forward cereal has used the marketing tactic of appealing to children through radio and TV ads.

No Smoking Day
If you or someone you know smoke cigarettes, you know that it is a very difficult thing to deal with. Cigarettes are highly addictive and harmful to the person who smokes then as well as the people around them. No Smoking Day aims to bring awareness to the dangers of this addiction. The day also tries to spotlight resources available to help people decide to try and quit.
History of No Smoking Day
No Smoking Day started out in 1984 and has grown in size and scope since then. It is celebrated in communities across the world trying to educate more people every year. Each year there is a new short them that can be used in advertising and media to help get the word out. One that many may remember was used in 2010 was “Break free”. This theme was used with images of broken cigarettes encouraging smokers to try to break the chains of tobacco addiction.
Why is it so important to have a day set aside for this? Over the last few decades, it has become very clear how terribly dangerous smoking is. There are toxins in them that cause many different forms of cancer from the mouth to the lungs. What is also important to know is that while it may be a personal choice to smoke or not, when one smokes near another person -or even a pet – the second-hand smoke is just as dangerous to them. So, in fact, it really isn’t just a personal decision. The protection of people who do not want to be effected by second-hand smoke has led to new laws in most communities that ban smoking in most public spaces.
Note:
I had quit smoking last year, but after the loss of my G-Mother and Mother in a short period of time, I again took them back up. However, Yesterday I went to the Doc and got me some Chantix and started down that road once and for all .. If I can I know you can so get after it .. What you waiting for, it doesn't get any easier the longer you wait... Don't be like me and quit now... You will thank God you did..
And
International Women's Day
Mother, sisters, wives, girlfriends and fiancees…what would we ever do without them?
Nobody can honestly say we don’t owe an enormous amount to the women in our lives, from the mothers who made us chicken soup when we were sick as children, to the sisters who helped us decide what to wear on our first date, to the wives who somehow manage to juggle both a career and a family, never missing a beat. Women’s Day is all about celebrating these incredible people and showing them how much we love, respect and value them.
This holiday is perhaps especially important in parts of the world where women are still forced to deal with shocking inequality on a daily basis and is meant to raise awareness of the challenges and struggles faced by these women. Women’s Day celebrates women’s history, highlighting key events, milestones and achievements, and aims to further promote and raise awareness of women’s rights and to achieve equal opportunity status in all walks of life.
The History of Women’s Day
It may come as a rather sad surprise that Women’s Day was first celebrated on February 28th, 1909 in New York. Two years later, German socialist Luise Zietz proposed that the holiday become an annually observed one that would celebrate various women’s issues, such as suffrage, so as to promote equal rights for women.
The first few Women’s Days were celebrated in a quite different fashion than they are nowadays, with hundreds of demonstrations taking place in Europe. During these demonstrations, women demanded they finally be given both the right to vote and to hold public office. Employment sex discrimination was also an important issue.
In 1917, the Women’s Day demonstrations in Saint Petersburg, Russia, helped initiate the February Revolution, when women marched through the city demanding an end to World War I. This shocked even Leon Trotsky, who, much like other Russian leaders of the day, did not expect the Women’s Day protests to cause that much of a stir.
Until 1977, Women’s Day was celebrated mainly in socialist countries. It was only after the United Nations General Assembly’s decision to proclaim March 8th International Women’s Day that the holiday gained worldwide popularity.

National Barbie Day
For many, some of the fondest memories of childhood involve their very own Barbie doll. Ken and Barbie and all their friends have helped generations of children fill hours of creative play. Barbie Day celebrates all the strides this doll has made in the over sixty years of bringing joy to the world.
Did you have a Barbie doll growing up?
History of Barbie Day
The history of Barbie Day is the history of Barbie herself as the day marks her official birthday.
Barbie debuted on March 9, 1959 at the American International Toy Fair in New York. She was a labor of love from Ruth Handler who was the wife of the co-founder of the toy giant Mattel, Inc. After watching children playing with baby dolls and paper dolls, she thought that the toy market needed something more.
After a trip to Germany where she saw a doll that was in line with what she wanted, she convinced her husband and the company to make the first ever mass produced doll with adult features. While there have been small changes through the years, Barbie came off the production line much like we know her today. There were some who objected to her figure, but as you can see with her success, those thoughts were in the minority.
Do you know the background story for Barbie?
Her parents, George and Margaret Roberts, named her Barbara Millicent Roberts. Her nickname is the famous Barbie.
What about Ken you ask?
His mother, Edna Carson, named him after her father, Kenneth.
After a time, Barbie gets a host of siblings, cousins and friends!
To learn more, you can head over to your handy search engine and find all the details. It is very interesting to see which dolls are no longer produced and who is newest to the group!
And

History of Panic Day
When it comes to holidays, you may think if the ones that are to celebrate fun moments. Panic Day is the day to recognize how stressful life has become and see what can be done to minimize the effects. Stress is dangerous to your health. Stress can bring on illnesses such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity.
Some people respond to stress by having feelings of panic which can be very debilitating. Panic can make a person feel that their fear cannot be overcome.
