Thoughts on Bitcoin as payment?

On two different occasions I have had Coinbase delay the transfer of my bitcoins "for 72hours for your security".
What rubbish!  They hoped to hold onto my coins for 3 days to make profit for themselves before sending them on.
This is a REAL issue when your Newsagency has stated that the quote for your magazines is only good for 24 hours.
In both cases I contacted Coinbase's Support line - and got automated responses stating that the transfer time could not be altered up by the Support Team.

What I found I had to do was cancel the 'held' transaction - and to their credit my coins were immediately put back into my wallet - and then perform the same transaction action again. Surprise! On both occasions the 2nd transaction went through to the blockchain immediately and was confirmed within 20mins.

Yes Mabuhay, Coinbase is easy to use - but you have to keep your eyes open for their random "your coins are being held for 72 hours for your security' logarithm with every transaction!

That's interesting, I've never had that happen to me. But I've also had a Coinbase account for investment purposes before I started using bitcoin as payment. Do you have your ID verified on Coinbase as well as the other forms of verification?

Yes, cause, Coinbase, after all, is like a " PayPal " they can frozen whatever and whenever they want .

Agreed. The second my btc transaction clears I transfer it away from coinbase and then it is totally under my control. I would never pay a newsagent direct from Coinbase since they look for those sorts of transactions. It always goes via a wallet, or two, first.

Never had the 72hr problem, but would be furious if I did. Anything could happen to the value in that time. Ok, I might forgive them if it increased so I made a profit, but it is pretty random. I made money on btc years ago because I was in from very early on - my first bitcoin cost $20. These days it is 50/50, sometimes I'm up, sometimes I'm down. But I never spend what I can't afford to lose.

As a form of payment I like it because there is no ambiguity about whether it went through.

Amazing you bought your first bitcoin for 20 bucks !!!!!!!! . My first one was at 1000 ( paid 50 times your price Smile ) . But, nowadays, to save, it could be really annoying, it can got to 10000, then to 3000, then to 7000 , and all this within a couple of days.

Yes, M, I do have my ID verified on Coinbase - both Driving License and Passport.  That's why I get so furious that they've tried to hold my coins on 2 occasions.

And yes, it's exactly like PayPal.   They withdraw your money from your bank account immediately - but you have to wait up to 5 working days for it to appear in your PayPal balance.

Crooks, the lot of them!

I sold it for less than $50, thinking I'd cash out with a very nice profit! Now I find myself wondering why I didn't just sell half to cover the original cost and hang onto the rest. But there's no point in playing regret with 20:20 hindsight - after all, who was to know? (In life I seem to have a habit of walking out on things just before they become really successful!)

Later on after I realised this bitcoin thing wasn't going away and did make a better profit. But it is basically gambling, so once the value went up again, I withdrew what I'd paid and gambled with the profit - that way I wouldn't really lose.

Do not buy into bitcoin based on the market value.. just use it. Hope that helps somewhat! Happy New Year! To all of you; love, health, and prosperity!

The only catch is you need to have a trusted source because there is no getting your money back if it's a scam. But it all works pretty quick. Cash App and Coinbase are probably the easiest methods of purchase. If one wants more security you can send the coins from there to a wallet like Electrum or Mycellium. Coinbase Pro gives probably the lowest fees but you have to transfer funds via ACH which takes about 5 business days. Localbitcoins as stated previously is probably the most anonymous way to purchase without using a bitcoin tumbler which is risky in itself from what I've read. It seems there have been tumblers that have stolen the amounts put in. I have less experience with that as I don't really use tumblers.

I’ve had cash app for a while now, and I did purchase Bitcoins I’ve just been letting them sit. Does anyone know if their newerish “withdrawal” option is like sending a payment? I’ve searched a lot but haven’t found any one who’s actually “withdrawn” to someone else’s BTC wallet... or if it’s safe to do that from their app?

Not sure what I should do, I invested in Bitcoin only about a month or so ago. Now with this whole pandemic that’s going on with the COVID-19 and market dropped I’m wondering if I should just cut my losses now or wait it out or buy more?? . I’m just afraid if I wait another week or 2 I might not have anything left.

What does anyone else think? Buy or sell? Just last week I had almost doubled profit and now I’ve got less than half of my investment and def can not afford to loose it all.
