Whooo Hooo!

For all of you, who have gone to hang a picture and ended up tearing out and repairing a wall.  That was me, 4 days ago.

I saw a bit of rust forming on the exhaust pipe of my scooter.  So, no big, just remove a plastic shroud that's on the outside for looks, paint with the right pain, done.  Three bolts attached the aluminum lined shroud three mounts on the muffler, each with  welded on nut on the back of the little raised mounts.

All were phillips heads.  None would budge.  Quickly rounded out the phillips head shape with the drill and phillips end.  Dug out my dremel set, cut three nice flat head slots, used a foot long screwdriver and thread loosening oil overnight, and got two off.  Made the slot bigger to accomodate hub remover end of a lug wrench.  wouldn't budge.  (Oh, I'd already gone to a nearby shop and tried an impact hammer earlier on, but that was after I already rounded the slots).

Dremmeled another slot.  Snapped off ridges on slots I'd created.  Used cutoff attachment and took the bolt down to the entry, no end left.  Went to hardware store and got the right size bit and extractor for the drill.  No luck.  So started making the hole through the bolt wider, bit at a time.  I was afraid once I had hollowed out the bolt, that I would destroy the threads on the welded on nut.  Running out of options.

Then, a bit of luck.  The shell of the bolt--what was left of it, kind of came loose, and I worked carefully a bit longer to get the remnant out.  Fingers crossed, I tried one of the other three bolts to see if I'd finessed the drilling and still left the thread on the nut.  I had, bolt turns.  Now, do the bit of painting, trip to hardware store to replace the slotted nuts with hex head nuts.  Four days, on and off, for one bolt.

Lesson:  Always start with a could of days of thread loosening oil and impact hammer,  before you mess up the head of the bolt.

Anyway.  I got lucky at the end.  I'm tired, hit my hand with a hammer in the process.  I feel good.

Dremmeled another slot. When Spanky posted that line, he lost me. Elsewise, I could figure it out.

(He sounds to be quite handy.)

I'm soooo looking forward to some nice fall weather too Char. It's been so hot and humid down here, but hey, at least it stopped raining for now. I think we here in La are pretty damn lucky that storm in the Gulf is not coming our way. Couldn't possibly take anymore rain. There are still some areas underwater around this state. It's been just about as devastating as Katrina for areas west of me.

Anyway, until fall makes it's way here, dis little bug is staying inside next to the A/C Big Grin
