Pizza With The Works Except Anchovies Day came into existence from pure common sense. There’s a lot of people out there who will, foolishly and naively, choose to order their pizza with ‘the works’, never thinking for a moment that there’s a madman out there perfectly willing and capable of putting anchovies on a poor innocent pizza.

The horror.

Let’s ask one question first, though, where the heck did this crazy idea of putting anchovies on a pizza come from, to begin with?

It certainly doesn’t seem like anything a sane person would do to their pizza, so where is patient zero for this insanity?

Near as we can tell it came from the Ancient Romans who first offered up a fermented fish topping known as Garum for their flatbreads. They were offered as a kind of nostalgia back in the early days of pizza, and from there on they just kinda stuck around and never quite went away.

Storing them is cheap, even though only about 50 out of every 18,000 customers actually order them on their pizzas.

World Kindness Day



Kindness Day isn’t just about adopting all the children from your local orphanage – it’s about the little gestures of kindness too.

Helping others can restore a sense of humanity, not to mention giving you that warm fuzzy glow inside.

Kindness Day was born when a collection of humanitarian groups came together on November 13, 1997 and made a “Declaration of Kindness”. Likewise, on Kindness Day everyone is encouraged to make a similar declaration.Donating books, food or clothes to your local community is a great way to celebrate.

However, pledging to commit just one act of kindness is no less worthwhile: hold the door open for a stranger, compliment your neighbour on their collection of garden gnomes, let your partner have control of the TV remote for the evening.

However you decide to celebrate remember that the best thing about Kindness Day is that it doesn’t cost a thing!

Speaking of that old dastardly pickled pepper picker, it turns out that dear old Peter Piper was actually a real person, someone from our histories who was renowned for his taste in delicious spices and became immortalized as a result.

He was quite the character when you all things were taken in, he was French and dastardly, so that paints an image right there. He’s also one-armed, and a horticulturist, which must make planting tricky from time to time.

To wrap it all up? His favorite way of getting seeds for planting his spices was at the tip of a sword and the roar of cannonball. Yep, you got it, he was also a pirate. When he got his hands on some nutmeg he got his rhyme “Peter Piper Picked a Peck of Pickled Peppers”

Operating Room Nurse Day



While the surgeon may be the star of the operating theatre, without the work of a team of skilled and reliable operating room nurses vital surgical procedures could not take place. These hard-working professionals are responsible for all aspects of patient care during a medical operation, including welcoming, assessing and prepping patients, handling medical equipment, helping with procedures and maintaining a sterile environment.

It is one of the most demanding nursing jobs, as more complicated operations are known to go on for many hours on end and nurses need to maintain focus and work constantly for long periods without a break.

That’s why it can be easily agreed that these lifesavers definitely deserve their own day—just one day of every year, when people can stop and think about just how much they owe the operating room nurses who helped make their operations successful.

The History of Operating Room Nurse Day

The history of nursing dates back well over 2000 years. The Hippocratic Collection describes skilled care and observation of patients by “attendants” on several different occasions, which were most likely the first real nurses mankind has ever known.

During later historical periods, both nuns and monks tended to provide nurse-like care to the sick. Examples of this can be found in the histories of many religions, such as Christianity, Buddhism, and Islam.

Archaeologists have also discovered plenty of evidence suggesting humans have been performing various types of surgery for up to 9,000 years, with the earliest Egyptian surgical texts dating back to about 1,500 BC.

In 1989, the State Governor of Iowa, Terry Bransted, decided to help reward operating room nurses for all of their (often underappreciated) work and put through an executive order to establish an annual Operating Room Nurse Day.

Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day



Although it has been rumored that Clean Your Refrigerator Day was started by the Whirlpool Corporation, the origin of this event is lost in the mists of time. The day is a great reminder though, that, to function effectively, our kitchen appliances should be cleaned out once in a while.

Refrigerators can be one of those kitchen appliances that are taken for granted. They keep food cool and prevent it from spoiling. We only notice them when they fail to work or if a foul smell starts emanating from the interior every time we open the door. Food we bought weeks ago can be lurking in the back, uneaten.

So, don your rubber gloves, fill that bucket with warm water and get cleaning. It won’t take long. In fact, a couple of hours will probably do it. The ‘fridge doesn’t even have to be turned off.

You’ll thank yourself later.

Writing is not just for acclaimed authors. After all, they had to start somewhere too, and even though it may seem hard to believe, every famous writer started the first chapter of their first book with just one word.

I Love to Write day was founded by author John Riddle, a non- fiction and self-help writer, to get kids writing in schools and encourage adults to rekindle an old dream.

This special day is celebrated by many different organisations – schools, community halls, churches, and even shopping centres. It covers all genres, from novels to poetry to writing in to your local newspaper with a point you’ve always wanted to make but never found time for before.

The aim is to get people to sit down and put something on paper or on a computer, however short and in whatever style, kick-starting their writing and giving them confidence through being part of a global movement.

The History of I Love to Write Day

I Love to Write Day was created in 2002 by Delaware-based author John Riddle. Riddle has been writing for the past thirty years and has written a total of 34 books so far. When asked why he decided to create a day dedicated to the love he and many other people have for writing, he said, “My goal for I Love To Write Day is to have people of all ages spend time writing.

They can write a poem, a love letter, a greeting card, an essay, a short story, start a novel, finish a novel…the possibilities are endless. (…)

Hi Ice,

Excellent post.  Writing will soon be gone, excepting secretive groups as in "Soylent Green".   Burning the books, erasing the past is the path of totalitarianism.  The U.S. resists this, to our credit.

In a Platonic dialogue--I'm not going to Google--the new invention of "writing" is discussed.  Only a very few could write or read of course.  Plato concluded that writing deprives the interchange of discussion, the reactions, the personality of dialogue, and, it would not last except as a curiousity and accounting tool. 

He was wrong.  Writing developed into an art.  The confusion it can now cause is nowhere more apparent than the information overload that has resulted from the Internet.  Your average Civil War soldier could write with eloquence.  Today's students can only print, but that would be sufficient.

Writing makes you clarify your thoughts.   When I started writing, though I'd had many classes, I had to go back and study punctuation, as I was unclear about how to string thoughts together, and I never had a "punctuation" class. 

Writing takes thought, acronyms don't.  I applaud you for including this day.

Have a Party with Your Bear Day is one of several bear-related holidays of which Teddy Bear Picnic Day is the most famous.

The origins and history of this holiday are shrouded in obscurity, although may be a variation on another bear-related holiday. Aside from the obvious, very little is defined about this holiday.

Is the bear in question a teddy bear?

A real bear?

Someone dressed in a bear suit?

Its open to interpretation – just use caution if the party involves a real bear!

Some celebration suggestions are to host a party where guests are bring teddy bears – a fun option for children – or to take photos of oneself next to a stuffed museum bear while wearing a party hat. Another fun option might be a trip to a zoo or wildlife park, or learning more about these amazing animals while enjoying a piece of cake.

The appeal of buttons is clear. They come in every shape, colour and style, from pearly white shirt buttons, to ornate Victorian affairs, to cute fastenings shaped like insects and animals.

Any outfit can be updated by adding the right buttons, and sewing them on is one of the easiest types of needlework to learn. And they don’t just belong near buttonholes, either.

Clusters of buttons can be used to decorate almost everything, and even on their own in jars they are delightful to handle, play with and admire. Some collect them, but most just lose them. Regardless, nearly everyone seems to love them, or at least regard them with fascination. In case you may be thinking that buttons do not deserve their own holiday, try to imagine what life would be like without them.

Sure, we have zippers and velcro, but could you imagine velcro down the front of your elegant blouse? Of course not!

Beaujolais Nouveau Day



Wine has a long and august history, with an in- depth and diverse knowledge of the various vintages and styles being a hallmark of true upper class sophistication. But even among vintners and Oenophiliacs (wine lovers) there are certain vintages that have a reputation for excellence, and owning them is a hallmark of true wine snobbery.

Those with a proper nose are able to distinguish a wine’s special bouquet, all of the subtle variations such as regions, varietal types of wine, and how the wine was manufactured.

So what does all of this have to do with Beaujolais nouveau day? Read on!

History of Beaujolais nouveau Day

Beaujolais nouveau is a special variety of wine produced from the delicious jewel-like Gamay grapes grown in the Beaujolais area of France.

Such is the popularity of this vintage, that there is something of a competition to get the first bottles released for sale, and they’re always released on the Third Thursday in November.

Part of what makes this wine unusual is that under the strict regulations on wine to be found in France, it is able to be sold in the same year in which it was harvested.

Such wines are called vin de primeur, and tend towards grapes like the Gamay, capable of short fermentation while giving a rich fruity flavor sweetened by residual sugar.

The ancient Persians also used petroleum for lighting purposes, filling their lamps with it, as well as for various medicinal purposes.In the mid-1800s, Scottish chemist James Young began distilling petroleum, resulting in the production of kerosene as well as a thicker, darker oil that was perfect for lubricating machinery.

Today, about 90% of the world’s vehicles are powered using petroleum. Russia, Saudi Arabia and the United States currently produce the most petroleum in the world; however, significant deposits are found in many other countries, such as Canada and Venezuela.

Because petroleum is a limited, non-renewable energy source, many scientists have devoted their entire careers to developing new technologies that will be able to replace it once it’s gone.

2007: The Eagles reached number one on the Billboard 200 Album Chart for the sixth time with their first studio album in 28 years Long Road out of Eden. The album went on to be certified Platinum seven times.

1994: Bob Dylan began a two day taping of his appearance on MTV Unplugged at New York City’s Sony Studios. The appearance would be broadcast the following month and the album was released the following May.

1990: ZZ Top peaked at number six on the Billboard 200 Album Chart with Recycler which was their fifth top ten album in the U.S. The album went on to go Platinum in the U.S.

1990: David Crosby broke his shoulder, left leg and ankle in a motorcycle accident in Los Angeles.

1979: Jethro Tull bassist John Glascock died of a congenital heart defect in London. He was 28 years old.

1978: During Bob Dylan’s concert at San Diego Sports Arena, a fan threw a silver cross onstage which the singer picked up and pocketed. The following year Dylan converted to Christianity and released his religious themed album Slow Train Coming.

1970: Elton John recorded his first live album during a live radio broadcast at A and R Recording Studios in New York City. The album was released the following year as 11-17-70.

1967: The Who began their second tour of North America in Kansas City, KS. The group was on tour opening for The Buckinghams.

1958: Alan Freed learned that his trial for inciting a riot in Boston during a rock show he promoted in May 1958 was postponed until January 1959. The delay was due to prosecutors investigating that Freed broke Massachusetts anti-anarchy laws.
