Mickey Mouse Day

[Image: Mickey-Mouse-Birthday-November-18-1-1024x512.jpg]

If there’s one image that everyone in the world can recognize, it’s the iconic ears of our favorite mouse, Disney’s Mickey Mouse. His face grace everything from ceramic mugs to balloons, touching on every industry and areas of our lives. It can be found in the shape of ice cream on a hot summer afternoon, or on the back of a hoodie on a frigid autumn morning, and when the day’s work is done, we can join him in Kingdom Hearts as they King. It all started with a short film called “Steamboat Willie”, and ever since, he’s been the very icon of family fun, hope over adversity, and following your dreams.

History of Mickey Mouse Day

Mickey Mouse was originally dreamed up by Ub Iwerks and Walt Disney in 1928, and from that first short film has risen to be a worldwide recognized Icon.

Year after year, Mickey has won nominations for the Academy Award for the Best Animated Short film, and finally won one in 1928.

As a tribute to just how popular and ground-breaking this fantastic mouse is, he was the first animated character to ever receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Since then we saw the rise and fall of “The Mickey Mouse club”, and a growing family of characters that have all become part of the Disney IP. If it weren’t for a bit of duplicitous backstabbing and Hollywood Drama, Mickey might never have come into existence.

Mickey first came to pass as a replacement for Walt’s first popular creation, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. After the relationship with Universal Studios soured, Mickey Mouse was created and came to be the avatar of the happiest place on earth.

GIS Day

GIS.. Geographic Information System… A simple three letter phrase that describes a system that has come to affect every aspect of our lives. From our GPS systems to Google Maps, GIS systems are integrated in everything and serve to make our lives easier every single day.

Thanks to this amazing science, we are able to have our deliveries made on time, and get straight to the house of a new friend without getting lost, even though we’ve never been there before.

GIS is a truly amazing thing!

History of GIS Day

A Geographic Information System is specifically designed to manage all of the information involved with interpreting and present geographical data. While this involves a broad number of technologies, they all come down to one thing. Storing and processing data about the world around us and making it available to be used in a format able to be interpreted and used by other systems.

GIS Day was established in 1999 by Esri President and Co-Founder Jack Dangermond after he had been inspired by Ralph Nader to do so.

Recognizing the importance and implication of this system, and that it was important that the people of the modern age be familiar with the effect it had on their lives, this holiday was established with the distinct purpose of raising awareness.

While currently primarily used terrestrially, you can bet that when we start putting permanent satellites into orbit around other planets, this technology is going to be vital in driving the study and colonization of the solar system, mining of resources within it, and observing the unique traits of distant planets.

Have A Bad Day Day

Quote:There’s nothing wrong or evil about having a bad day. There’s everything wrong with making others have to have it… with you. – Neil Cavuto
And that, ladies and germs, is precisely why you should embrace the glory that is “Have a Bad Day Day”. When you’re having a bad day, you shouldn’t have to suffer alone, so wish everyone you meet “Have a Bad Day”, but do it with the brightest, cheeriest smile you can put on your face.

Chaos, my friends, is the heart of the revolution, and all revolutions started on a Bad Day.

History of Have a Bad Day Day

There’s a job out there that ensures that you’re going to have a Bad Day, possibly dozens of times a day.

What job is that?

Anything in the customer service industry. If you’ve never worked in the customer service industry it’s important to understand that your soul is impeccably clean, and you’ve never truly known a day of suffering.

We are all customers at some point in our lives, and unfortunately, that means that we all join the ranks of the truly walking dead. Retail customers, be afraid friends, be afraid.

But Have a Bad Day Day gives our heroes in the customer service industry a chance to strike back… Every agent has to end their spiel, no matter how rotten the customer was, with the phrase “Have a Nice Day!”, but on Have a Bad Day Day, they get a reprieve from this monotonous platitude and get to instead assail their customers with that most delightful of passive- aggressive phrases.

“Have a Bad Day!” announced in the cheeriest tone they can manage, and then they revel in the confusion as their customers try to make out whether or not they’ve just been insulted.

They’ll never know.

And

World Toilet Day

World Toilet Day…at first glance, this seems like an unlikely candidate for a holiday and more like some sort of joke, but the day is nowhere as trivial or humorous as it may seem.

All in all, it strives to draw attention to various sanitation issues around the world and work towards resolving them. Despite access to proper sanitation being declared a basic human right, one in three people across the globe, so some 2.5 billion people in total, do not have regular access to a toilet.

Additionally, even amongst those who do have such access, unclean and unsafe toilets pose problems of their own, including contributing towards the spread of diseases like cholera, typhoid and hepatitis—in some parts of Africa, diarrhoea is one of the main child-killers.

Open defecation is also responsible for increasing the number of sexual assaults perpetrated on women and children.

Furthermore, when young girls begin menstruating, the lack of privacy forces them to stay home from school, thus limiting their chances of getting a basic education and, what comes after that, a decent job in the future.

World Toilet Day’s ultimate goal is to allow everyone on the planet to take care of their most basic needs without having to fear for their safety.

The History of World Toilet Day World

Toilet Day was created by the World Toilet Organization in 2001. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon of the United Nations said: “We have a moral imperative to end open defecation and a duty to ensure women and girls are not at risk of assault and rape simply because they lack a sanitation facility.”

He went on to talk about how having to defecate openly infringes on human safety and dignity, and how women and girls risk rape and abuse as they wait until night falls to relieve themselves because they lack of access to a toilet that offers privacy.

Another issue is that toilets generally remain inadequate for populations with special needs, such as the disabled and elderly.

Since its inception, World Toilet Day has played a vital role in challenging governments, businesses and other groups to make changes. It has also worked towards breaking various taboos surrounding the topic, in order to facilitate discussion and lead to the creation of better, safer solutions.

Peanut Butter Fudge Day

This special holiday was established by the National Peanut Board and is the perfect time to indulge in this sweet treat. It is widely believed that fudge was first created in the 1800s when a batch of caramels didn’t turn out quite right. This mistake turned out to be a delicious revelation that people have been enjoying all around the world ever since.

As the popularity of this special occasion has spread, a number of different events have been created in order to celebrate Peanut Butter Fudge Day. These include a large number of bake offs, tastings and other fun food related events.

However, by far the best way to celebrate Peanut Butter Fudge Day is by creating your own batch of peanut butter fudge.

This year, instead of baking alone invite a group of friends to help you and use your imagination to create a unique twist to the standard recipe.

Universal Children's Day

You’ve heard so many people say it: children are the future. And whether you yourself have children or not, that still rings true.

Today’s children are tomorrow’s scientists, politicians, doctors and teachers. Today’s children will inherit all of what humanity has managed to accomplish since the beginning of its existence, both the good and honorable deeds and the cruel wars and terrible failures. It is the children of today that will be charged with protecting the weak and vulnerable of this world, and making even the hardest of decisions in order to do so.

Who then, if not our children, deserves a holiday?

This special day is dedicated to all of the children, so that they may enjoy these carefree years while they last and be ready for the responsibilities that await them. So let’s live it up, kids!

The History of Universal Children’s Day

Universal Children’s Day was first announced by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1954. Originally, there were 2 goals this day was to help achieve: to encourage children of all races, creeds and religions to spend time together, getting to know each other and appreciating each other’s differences, and to prompt governments worldwide to pay more attention to the welfare of their youngest citizens.

Although Universal Children’s Day takes place on November 20th, each country that participates in the festivities has its own date set aside for this purpose—in South Sudan, for example, Children’s Day is celebrated on December 23rd, in Cuba on the third Sunday of July, and in Poland on June 1st.

Since its establishment as a holiday, Universal Children’s Day has been tied to many different, honorable causes, such as the commitment to stopping HIV/AIDS by 2015. Another one of the goals Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon of the United Nations aspires to reach is for every child to have access to an education and be able to attend school.

Promoting peace, respect and concern for the environment among the world’s children are also considered to be of utmost importance.

Hard to respond to toilet day without seeming to trivialize more popular efforts.  But, it's very real.  I've heard all that before, the lack, the danger to women and children to abuse.  Even the U.S. homeless face the same problem.  I know about the women in other countries who must wait until after dark to find a place to relieve themselves.  I don't know exactly where it is that that this great country plans to point its basic rights efforts.  Doubt it will be in this direction.  I hate these stories.  Thanks for posting it Ice.

Human-Animal Relationship Awareness Week

[Image: human-animal-relationship-awareness-week...660751.jpg]

The Animals and Society Institute, an organization that studies and promotes human-animal relationships, will be celebrating our first ever Human-Animal Relationship Awareness Week, in the second week of November (November 13-19, 2016).

We would be very grateful if you would list this on your calendar of animal-related holidays.

The goal for this week is to raise awareness of the importance of human-animal relationships, and to highlight both the benefits of, and potential problems associated with, these relationships.

ASI’s goal is to improve and expand knowledge about the variety of human-animal relationships in order to order to create safer and more compassionate communities for all—people and animals. We have a variety of educational messages that we will be unveiling that week, as well as some exciting opportunities for people who want to get involved.

World Television Day

The first World Television Forum was staged by the United Nations in the mid ’90s, and it was out of this event that World Television Day was born.

The forum brought together leading figures from the media industry to analyze the growing impact that TV had on decision-making and public opinion when it comes to issues of peace and security around the planet.

The History of World Television Day

In December 1996 the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the 21st of November World Television Day, the same year the first World Television Forum was held.

Acording to the Uited Nations, this decision was taken in order to give recognition of the increasing impact television has had on decision-making by bringing various conflicts and threats to peace and security to the world’s attention, as well as its coverage of other major issues, including economic and social.

World Television Day is not meant to be so much a celebration of the electronic tool itself, but rather of the philosophy which it represents–a philosophy of openness and transparency of world issues.

Television has long been thought to represent communication and globalization in the contemporary world.

However, not all of the government representatives present saw matters quite that way. The delegation from Germany said, “Television is only one means of information and an information medium to which a considerable majority of the world population has no access… That vast majority could easily look at World Television Day as a rich man’s day.

They do not have access to television. There are more important information media and here I would mention radio in particular.”

Go For A Ride Day

Go For A Ride Day encourages you to get out into the world – hop on your bike, into your car, or simply get your walking boots out of storage and go on a trip.

Don’t worry too much about where you’re going, just enjoy the journey. What with all of the cell phones and emails constantly intruding on our lives, we can all agree that everyone needs some time to just get away from it all and feel free every now and then.

And what better way to do that then to just go for a ride!

The History of Go for a Ride Day

November 22nd has seen various developments of the transportation industry since as early as 1904, making Go For a Ride Day a celebration of not only cars, but any mode of transportation that strikes your fancy.

In 1904, a man named Mathias Pfatischer living in Philadephia, was the first American to patent the pioneer direct electricity and and interpole motor.

In 1927, another American inventor named Carl J. Eliason from Saynor, Wisconsin, acquired the patent for the snowmobile, which definitely drastically changed the lives of many of the inhabitants of Wisconsin for the better.

In 1977, the the regular mass service had their trial run on the famed supersonic Concorde.

As you can see, November 22nd has been an important day for various areas of the transportation industry.

Fibonacci Day

[Image: fibonacci-day1-e1447754796388-808x380.jpg]
Quote:”Von Neumann probe programmed to multiply Clickin’ and tickin’ with the equation of phi Striving and climbing and bribing and lying For science, fudge the numbers so that everything fits” – Doctor Steel Fibonacci Sequence

There are sequences that appear in nature time and time again, ones that seem to define the very basis of our reality and coordinate how everything comes together.

One of these numbers is the Fibonacci sequence, and it can be found in the most surprising of places.

Fibonacci Day commemorates this sequence and the man who brought it to our attention in 1202.

History of Fibonacci Day

Who’s the man?

That would be Leonardo of Pisa, known today as Fibonacci. He was not the first to think of it however, just the first to bring it to the European world and bring awareness to its importance in the furthering of science.

The sequence itself first appeared in Indian Mathematics, known as Virahanka numbers, and was connected with Sanskrit prosody.

The number sequence is also tied to the golden ratio and the golden triangle, both of which appear again and again in nature, as does the sequence itself.

Where might you ask?

It is in the most fundamental of things, from the petals of the yellow chamomile, the complex and seemingly random branching of a trees limbs, and these are just a few. Look deeper and you’ll find them within the pine cone and the shape of an unfurling fern, and in a truly strange one, it describes the family tree of bees and is deeply important to apiarists as a result.

The sequence has also inspired songs, such as that by the illustrious Doctor Steel, simply called “Fibonacci Sequence”.

It’s definitely worth taking the time to check out, and then listen to the rest of his stuff!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING DAY

And

Celebrate Your Unique Talent Day

Quote:Use what talents you possess; the woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best. – Henry Van Dyke

We all have remarkable talents that are unique to us, and there needs to be a time to celebrate those talents not just for the world, but for ourselves.

Can you whistle through your nose?

How about balancing an apple on your chin?

Can you say the alphabet backwards while belching?

It doesn’t matter what your special talent is, Celebrate Your Unique Talent Day is your chance to shine!

History of Celebrate Your Unique Talent Day

The history of Celebrate Your Unique Talent Day is as old as mankind, for we have all had our unique talents since the beginning of time.

Think of the person who first had the mind to understand how some minor aspect of the world worked. Perhaps it was gravity (you know Newton wasn’t the first one), or a special understanding of how clay came together with sand and heat to create a material that would be used in its various forms throughout all of human history, ceramic.

But even those who have less obviously useful talents should celebrate their unique talents. A Jester had a biting wit and a sort of wisdom that cut through the gallantry and pageantry of the royal court, and let them see straight to the truth of the matter without losing his head.

What of clowns and mimes?

Or those who have the ability to dive deep and hold their breath for extended periods?

Each of these talents have come to be used in important ways, even if just to entertain and brighten the spirits of those who watched the talent in action.

Celebrate Your Unique Talent Day lauds that special spark within us, the thing that makes us fundamentally unique from the rest of the world.
