Anxiety relief, non prescribed.
#1
Hi,

Well I'm having a total mare of a week. My son who is 10 goes away skiing with school for a week on Saturday morning and i am beyond stressed. I am trying to be positive and sunshine like in front of him, whilst secretly lying awake at night, googling safest places to sit on buses and aeroplanes! Im going to drive myself crazy.  Confused

I know he will be safe and everything will be super controlled, but i honestly feel like I'm about to have a breakdown and he hasn't even gone yet. It didn't help having yesterdays avalanche literally next door to where he is going.

I can't ask for anything from my gp as I'm currently tapering from Zopiclone and they will just frown at me, but i am literally going insane here and would be so grateful if anyone can help with anything i can purchase at the pharmacy.

Trying hard to feel the fear and do it anyway, but I'm just a mum who's scared.

Thanks in advance lovely people, I've got to go pack up his things now, wish me luck Smile

I don't know meds to calm you. But, I would pray a hedge of protection around my son. Pray a lot.

What about the possibility of you going as a chaperone? Despite i had disability issues, I was a chaperone at every event he attended. The school will have u monitor a differing group of children. But, you can watch your son and know in your heart and your mind that he is okay.

I would also research if anyone had ever been hurt at this location. From your school. It should put your mind at ease.

Good luck. Trust your son to be wise and cautious. Trust the chaperones to treat him as though one of their own children.

Everything should be fine.

But, if anyone knows a pharmacy med that calms one down, please share.

Thanks so much Charon for your response.

Oh trust me i asked when we booked him if they needed willing parents to go along lol, i usually do that on trips my children make, but it was a no go on the ski trip. I honestly think from the group of parents whats app chat that they would have had every parent with them and so would be unfair to pick a few. They have 7 teachers going and 45 children, and then they have the instructors at the resort who will take them out. My boy is under strict instructions to follow the guide as if he were his shadow and to go no where on his own. He knows he is not a world champion skier and that he needs to ski within his ability and not show off. Wow don't i just sound like a total fun sponge haha. (thats a nervous laugh)

I know i have to let him go and he is so, so excited, which is a good thing, I'm just a nervous wreck. The resort gets fantastic reviews and i know they are geared towards school trips and its their thing, so I'm sure it will be fine. I guess its just natural as parents to worry about our babies.

I will be saying lots of prayers for each section, I'm literally worried about the bus journeys, the flights and then the skiing, he on the other hand is worried he may get blisters and not be able to ski. I honestly can't remember the last time i could worry about the little things. I really don't want to put my fears onto him though, i want him to go and have an amazing time.

Going to google accidents in his specific resort now, for some reason i had not thought of that before, so thank you Smile

Sorry i don't know if i mentioned the fact he is going for a week!!!

When I was 12 we took a trip all the way across country; planes, buses, etc. I think there were six chaperones and around 50 kids. Everything went perfectly, nobody got hurt.

Life involves a lot of risk, and risk often causes anxiety; however, life is worth living, and places are worth seeing. Experiences like this during a child's pre-teen years are very important to help them develop their independence and world view, on the path to becoming an adult eventually.

Unfortunately I don't know of any non-prescription options to help with anxiety. I have used Diazepam for anxiety with good success, if that helps at all.

Godspeed!

Thank you so much Mugen for taking the time to respond, i really appreciate it.

I know in my heart he is going to have an amazing time and this is a wonderful opportunity for him to go do something he loves. Im actually going to use this as a way to try get a control of my need to control. I may yet go to my doctors and request help, i just know they will pull faces at me. I have lived abroad and travelled extensively and since becoming a mum i have taken my children with me. I know he will handle this fine, i guess i now know how my parents felt when i moved to Thailand at 21 for 6 years!!

Thanks again everyone Smile

Hi SaSa67,

I think you need to give yourself a break and get a goodnights sleep. If you can tolerate a little liquid benedryl, for example, without getting a benedryl hangover, it may go a long way to get you thinking more clearly. Most of us who might be detoxing from a Z drug, having anxiety about something that would make all of us anxious and then not sleeping, is a recipe for making oneself looney on top of trying to keep it together for your son.

Please do something to help yourself. A guy friend of mine, recommends gabacalm for anxiety and taken with melatonin for sleep. Both are over the counter. I have not tried the gaba, as my m.d. Has me off of most herbs and supplements, at the moment, except for vitamin D. But it works for him. YMMV.

Hang in there. And most importantly, don't think about the dumb stuff you did as a kid!! Especially, if you were anything like me!! ;-).......Rumor

You're son is going to absolutely have the time of his life on this ski vacation! I'm guessing the resort is out west (you mentioned an avalanche). Well the snow conditions are great out there right now! He will be amongst friends and, if he is an avid skier, then he will be on the slopes all day. Tons of exercise and mountain air make for one hungry and tired young boy at the end of the day. Food... long hot shower... text Mom... sleep... more food... and head out to ski all day again. What fun!
It sounds like he is going to a resort that caters to groups of youngsters, so he is going to have a qualified guide nearby at all times to keep him from going out of bounds or skiing trails that may be above his ability. Combine that with the school staff present and your son will be very well supervised to keep him safe.

As for you, if this separation is causing you to have full blown panic attacks, then maybe you do need to visit your GP and seek treatment. You're going to have to deal with this sort of thing on an increasing basis over the next ten years. If, on the other hand, you are anxious primarily because it is your son's first time away on his own, then all you need is a short term cure. I recommend daily cardio exercise and a glass or two of red wine around meal time to unwind.

Don't over-think the ski trip, it's only a week. Focus on the fun your son is most certainly having and use the time to give yourself a break!

Thank you so much for your response :Smile  Im not usually as bad, i think its just the first plane journey he has done without us, i don't care for flying much myself but do it often. He went off this morning at 7am to school all excited and will be taking off in an hour. Im actually in the UK and he is going to the French Alps. I know he will have a fantastic time, and as soon as he is there i will be feeling a lot better.

Going out for lunch now with the hubby and our 4 year old daughter, trust me no rest when that little whirl wind is around lol

Thanks to everyone else who responded, think i was just feeling the pressure in the run up to him going.

Type "mindfulness" into youtube, or just google it and start there, it is an excellent alternative long term treatment for anxiety.

Try this article

Also I suggest one looks into meditation. It takes practice like all things but once you get there it is excellent. Who could knock anxiety relief and tripping for free.
