Forgive Mom & Dad Day



Parenting is an enormously challenging task and although some parents are better than others, none are perfect. Forgive Mom & Dad Day presents a perfect opportunity to let go of past hurts and frustrations, to let well-meaning but disappointing parents off the hook, and to find freedom from nagging resentments.

Forgiving opens the door to a brighter future.

Awkward moments happen all the time, and to some folks more than others! For anyone who’s ever wished the ground would open up and swallow them, Awkward Moments Day is a celebration of all awkward moments. From walking out of a public toilet with the roll stuck on a shoe, to realising you’ve been speaking to someone everyday for a year, and don’t know their name, life is full of these moments. Although there isn’t much information regarding the origins of Awkward Moments Day, many people have commented on how interesting it is that Awkward Moments Day is the day after St Patrick’s day!

Awkward Moments Day can boast a mascot though, the awkward turtle.

National Poultry Day



Oh yes, it’s a fowl, fowl day – Poultry Day, that is! Celebrate this whole range of domestic feathered friends that are raised for their meat and eggs by thinking about just how boring Thanksgiving, Christmas and other holidays would be without the addition of a turkey, chicken, duck, goose or pheasant to the table. How naked would your fancy salad be without a quail’s egg quivering at the top? How incomplete would that Chicken Pot Pie be without…well…the chicken?

It is for all these reasons and more that we pause and say thank you to poultry for enhancing our diets and giving us opportunities to fight over the wishbone, draw lots over who gets the last drumstick, and encourage sibling rivalry by letting them fight out whose turn it is to crack the egg into the cake batter.

Whether it’s a honk honk, gobble gobble, or a cluck cluck, it all sounds the same to us – delicious!

International Read To Me Day



When we’re young, bedtime meant a number of things. It often meant taking a warm bath to get clean before shuffling off to bed, begging for a glass of water no less than three times and, of course, cuddling down with our parents for a bedtime story. There was something about the sound of their voice telling us our favorite stories that helped drag us into a contented slumber, where perhaps we’d dream these tales they told us.

There’s a day to recall these days and even to remind you to share these moments with your loved ones, and that’s International Read To Me day.

History of International Read To Me Day

International Read To Me day was established by the Child Writes Foundation to encourage the growth and spread of adult literacy. It became clear that in countries throughout the world adult literacy is a problem, and many adults simply lack the ability to read even for pleasure. When trying to find ways to help offset this, it became apparent that being read to as a child helped to encourage literacy and a love of reading in adults.

The result of these findings was obvious!

A holiday needed to be established to encourage the foundations of literacy by reading to our children, and thus was born “International Read To Me Day”!

While the holiday is definitely focused on encouraging children to read, some of the fundamental facts about this holiday extend even into adults. Reading to someone is an intimate act, something that can create closeness between two people and bring comfort to those we share it with. In Victorian times it was not at all unusual for an elderly person with failing eyes to employ someone strictly to read to them from their favorite tales.

Reading a story to our partner at bed time can help foster a sense of togetherness far more intimate than watching a movie together.

1976: Free guitarist Paul Kossoff died of drug-related heart problems on a flight from Los Angeles to New York. He was 25 years old.

International Day of Happiness



The International Day of Happiness was introduced by the General Assembly of the United Nations during 2012 and was celebrated for the first time in 2013. Through seminars and educational tips and tools, the aim is to educate and increase public awareness of the benefits of happiness.

The original idea came from the Kingdom of Bhutan in the Himalayan region of Asia. There, the population is thought by many to be among the happiest in the world due to the holistic approach to life and the amount of importance which is placed on the well being of people and communities, as much as material wealth.

For everyone, the day is a useful reminder that in general happiness does not necessarily come from buying and consuming, or from being famous or glamorous – but often from friends, family and emotional well being. Internationally, there are many events and websites in which people may participate.

National Proposal Day



Proposal Day was created as a way for many people to come together and ask for their partners hand in marriage. Unfortunately, it’s impossible to pinpoint exactly when this day was proposed since so many people have claimed the idea as their own. But as you can tell, it’s extremely popular and may even rival Valentines Day eventually.

Many times in the past, people have wanted to propose in a romantic and quirky way but had problems with self-confidence and lack of courage. With Proposal Day, these people have their unique way of proposing by being in a large group all doing it together.

These groups use social media to chose a meeting place to all come together. This happens all around the world.
Of course, this doesn’t mean that people have to propose only on this day, it’s a fun idea. You should propose when the time feels right.

Any day can be a beautiful day in the neighborhood – and Won’t you Be My Neighbor Day, is no exception!

Won’t You Be My Neighbor Day is a day to remember and honor Fred Rogers, that iconic children’s TV presenter of Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood. His show reached it’s heyday in popularity back in the 1970’s and 80’s, and repeats can still be seen today. Gentle, soft-spoken Mr. Rogers was a mainstay for preschoolers and their parents; teaching them that respect of those around you and a good attitude were just as important as learning your colors and letters.

Why not don a 70’s style sweater today, and speak softly to your partner? Be mindful of how you can show kindness and patience in explaining a simple concept to a child (or perhaps even to a work colleague!) After all, it’s a beautiful day for a neighbor – and for being neighborly!

World Down Syndrome Day



All of us have come into contact with those with Down Syndrome at one time or other. Usually free-spirited and happy, and often surrounded by adoring animal friends, people with Down Syndrome seem to be able to enjoy the little things in life the way that many of us can’t—and in many ways, they do.

However, they also face countless challenges on an every day basis, and many simple things the rest of us take for granted can prove extremely difficult for them, despite their admirably positive attitude to life. That’s why we should all take some time this World Down Syndrome Day to learn a bit more about this disorder and how we can help those who have it live better lives.

The History of World Down Syndrome Day

Down syndrome has been observed in all races for thousands of years. Sadly, many infants with disabilities were either killed or abandoned in ancient times. However, quite a few historical pieces of art are believed to portray people an even angels with Down syndrome, including South American pottery dating back the 5th century AD as well as some Renaissance paintings.

Down syndrome was first characterized as a separate form of mental disability in 1862 by English physician John Langdon Down. It was almost a hundred years later, however, that its cause, the triplication of the 21st chromosome, was discovered by Jérôme Lejeune. In the 19th and 20th centuries, many individuals with Down syndrome were institutionalized, few of the associated medical problems were treated, and most died in infancy or early adult life.

The eugenics movement, which is usually thought to have been exclusive to Nazi Germany but which was in fact active in many different parts of the world, began programs of forced sterilization of individuals with Down syndrome and comparable degrees of disability in the first half of the 20th century. After the Second World War, many advocacy groups for Down syndrome formed and began fighting for the inclusion of people with Down syndrome into the general school system and for a greater understanding of the condition among the general population, as well as groups providing support for families with children with Down syndrome.

The first World Down Syndrome Day was held on March 21st 2006. The day and month of the day were not coincidental, but were chosen specifically to correspond with 21 and trisomy.

Trees—they produce the vast majority of the oxygen we need to survive, they provide us with much-needed shade on hot days, and they’re just plain beautiful. For all of those reasons and many more, protecting the trees on our planet should be a real priority for all of us and thankfully, recently, it has.

Of course, with millions of hectares of forests being chopped down every year, we still have a long way to go, but we are making progress, and the International Day of Forests is proof of that.

The History of International Day of Forests

The International Day of Forests was established on March 21st, by resolution of the United Nations General Assembly on November 28, 2012. Since then, each year, various events celebrate and raise awareness of the importance of all types of forests, and trees outside forests, for the benefit of current and future generations.

The state of our forests is important to us all here on earth for many reasons – 80% of all terrestrial biodiversity lives in forests, and each year many species go extinct as a result of them being destroyed. Of course, forests also play a critical role in climate change deforestation results in 12-18 percent of the world’s carbon emissions and accelerated global warming.

Forests also provide food, fiber, water and and even medicines for approximately 1.6 billion of the world’s population, especially the poorest people.

Uh…what day is it again? Oh yes, that’s right – Memory Day! Celebrate the amazing gift of your memory – before you forget and the day is over!

Why not try one of those on-line brain games to test your memory skills? Or devise your own test at work – cover your eyes and try to remember all the items on your colleague’s desk? Or what about trying to remember the lines from your favorite TV show’s theme song from back when you were a child?

On a more serious note, we all know how devastating Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia are to both its sufferers and their loved ones. Why not mark this day in a meaningful way by supporting one of the great charities that help in these areas? Or go visit someone you know who is affected. They may not remember it, but you will – and your world will be a little better for it.

World Water Day



It’s a sad but true fact that 783 million people around the world still do not have access to clean water. Over 2.5 million people still do not have proper access to adequate sanitation facilities. This sad lack of such basic human needs is a tragedy that people around the world are seeking to redress.

This is also why the United Nations has set up World Water Day – a day where people can focus on the many ways ordinary people can get involved in helping people reclaim some dignity, and improve their long-term health through access to clean and safe water. Other water issues such as safeguarding aquatic eco-systems are also highlighted every year on this day. We need our water in all its forms!

Water is such a precious commodity that many take for granted. World Water Day is a chance to think about those people and places where water needs are still paramount, and seek to work together to find a solution.

As Young As You Feel Day is a day for losing your inhibitions!

If you are in good health, but feel restricted by how you are expected to behave, then As Young As You Feel Day is the time to rebel! We only live this life once and As Young As You Feel Day is a good reminder to us that age is a number, and shouldn’t be used to stop us enjoying ourselves.

You can celebrate As Young As You Feel Day by having that outrageous hairstyle you wanted when you were a teenager. Or dig out those clothes you wore when you were younger – they may even fit, too.

National Near Miss Day



Near Miss Day commemorates March 23rd, 1989, when a large asteroid missed the Earth by a mere 500,000 miles – a very near miss indeed! What would you do if an asteroid was about to hit the Earth – how would you spend your last hours, and would you even want to know?

They’re fluffy and playful, they yip and bark and are just all around adorable, and all they want is to be loved. What could we be talking about? That’s right, puppies! Puppy Day celebrates that most adorable of our four-footed friends, the baby canine, and it’s quite possibly the cutest day ever. It doesn’t matter the breed or gender, all puppies are the perfect solution to a terrible day. They’ll cuddle and crawl and… well, occasionally pee all over everything… but they’re puppies! When Puppy Day comes around, you better be ready for a barking good time, there’s no way to avoid it when the day is about the ultimate ball of heart-melting fluff!

You know what’s magical and fantastic? Oh right, we’ve already been fanboying about it haven’t we? That’s right, don’t care! Puppies! Puppies bring the gift of love without boundaries to us, and they’re absolutely determined to be the best friend you’ve ever had. When you come home from school, that’s all they care about, is that you’re home. Long day at work? Just a big happy ball of fluff coming to see you right at the door, more reliable than the bestest romantic partner. What’s amazing about the love for puppies is that it spreads across the world, through every culture and every social strata. Puppies just bring us all together!

Puppy Day was established to bring awareness to the world about puppy mills and how to go about adopting. Puppy mills are often some of the most horrible establishments, with the females bred until they either can’t conceive, or die giving birth. They’re literally run like a factory, money in, puppies out. Between these heinous establishments and both wild and family dogs remaining unsprayed and unneutered, the population of dogs is getting out of control.

National Chip and Dip Day



If love and marriage go together like a horse and carriage, what could possibly be said to describe just how well chips and dip go together?

No matter whether you prefer thick cheesy dips, hot vegetable-packed salsas, cool cream-cheese-based dips, or creative baked dips that combine all sorts of different flavors, the truth is that chips would just not be the same without them. There are thousands of different kinds of chip dips eaten with potato, corn, and more recently veggie chips the world over, meaning a holiday to celebrate the tradition of dipping chips is more than overdue.

And could you possibly think of a better, tastier day to celebrate than Chip and Dip Day? You’d be hard-pressed, that’s for sure.

The History of Chip and Dip Day

Dips have been made for thousands of years. One of the earliest dips to become popular long before chips ever came into existence is the Greek tzatziki, a combination of yogurt, cucumbers, garlic, salt and olive oil. Greeks still eat tzatziki with meats and bread, but since the invention of the potato chip in the mid-19th century, it and many variations of it have also become popular chip dips.

Guacamole, yet another iconic chip dip, that was first made by the Aztecs.

The potato chip itself is believed to have been invented in 1853 by a cook named George Crum whose potato wedges were repeatedly sent back to the kitchen by an unsatisfied customer who claimed they were too thick. Crum eventually became irritated and decided to serve the man potato slices so thin he could see through them fried to a crisp, topped with a rather excessive amount of salt. Surprisingly, the customer absolutely loved them, and chips were born. At first, chips were made only in restaurants, but by the 20th they began to be mass-produced.
