Insect Repellent Awareness Day

Most of us have been bitten by a mosquito or similar insect at one point in our life. Usually just an annoyance, insect bites can also prove very serious. Insect Repellent Awareness Day aims to promote the use of insect repellents to not only prevent bites but the spread of diseases, such as Malaria, carried by insects. Insect repellents can be used in various forms, including sprays, creams and tablets, and can help reduce insect bites significantly.

Launched in 2014, Insect Repellent Awareness Day was founded by scientists at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine to help people understand the importance of using repellents both in this country and, most importantly, when traveling abroad. Schools can tie in a celebration of the day with projects about bugs and perhaps link in with first aid knowledge around what to do if you are bitten and how to use repellents.

Chimborazo Day

Sometimes what qualifies as the biggest or tallest thing is dependent upon one’s perspective in life. Such is the case with the mountain known as Chimborazo. While its elevation is less than that of Everest, it has the unique trait of being the highest point on Earth when measured from the Earth’s core. Chimborazo Day honors and celebrates this (kind of) highest of all mountains and its important cultural role in the Chimborazo province of Equador.

So what’s so special? Come with us and find out.

History of Chimborazo Day

Chimborazo was long thought to be (not entirely incorrectly) the tallest mountain in the world and, like Everest, became a destination spot for those intrepid adventurers who would make the attempt to climb to its highest peak and proclaim themselves heroes for a day for having done so. It bears an important role in geographic history as being one of the two key points that was used to determine the actual shape of the Earth.

Working with the French Geodesic Mission, a Lapland team used data gathered from almost, but not quite, the top of this great volcano and determined that the earth was not, in fact, a sphere. From that point forward it was known without question that the Earth was more of an oval/flattened shape known as an oblate spheroid.

For 80 years men and women tried to climb to the peak of the mountain, each time being turned back by its daunting height, craggy slopes, and the perils of altitude sickness. Alexander von Humbolt climbed the mountain in 1802, and reached a point 5,875m high making him, at the time, the European who had climbed to the highest altitude. It wasn’t until 1886 that Edward Whymper successfully scaled the mountain to its very peak and stood atop it, proud and triumphant as the man who conquered Chimborazo.

National Cancer Survivors Day

[Image: OMAHA_LF_NationalCancerSurvivorsDay-4Way...ncer_1.jpg]

There’s an epidemic in the world today, one that seeps into every level of the social strata. Education is no protection, nor is wealth, and while there are ways to reduce the possibility that you’ll be one of the almost 2 million people per year that are affected by it, the causes of this plague are only poorly understood. Every year 450 men and women out of every 100,000 are diagnosed with one of the dozens of kinds of cancer, and 171 men and women die from it.

Cancer Survivor Day is for those who have faced off against this most dread of ailments and risen again to live full happy lives.

History of Cancer Survivor’s Day

Cancer Survivor Day was established to recognize and celebrate those who have battled cancer and won, and to help bring hope to those still battling this terrible disease. While the numbers above sound terrible, there is more hope than they imply, in the US Alone there are 14.5 million people who have beat or are living with cancer and 32 million around the world. This is a great success, and the survival rate gets higher with every passing year.

Cancer hangs over the minds and hearts of most people as a death sentence, and the reaction in saying someone you know has it is palpable. But both those suffering from Cancer and their families need to know that it is far from helpless. Treatment is getting more effective, and there are groups around the world that get together to help the Cancer patient and their families make it through the very long and hard road that is treatment and recovery.

Cancer Survivor Day is also dedicated to helping to raise funds and awareness for cancer research and treatment. The fight isn’t over, in fact, it’s just heating up and cancer is in the cross-hairs. With the efforts of organizations like National Cancer Survivor’s Day Foundation and the American Cancer Association, a cure for cancer is just around the corner.

National Hug Your Cat Day

Hug Your Cat Day is one of those pleasingly straightforward holidays. Quite simply, it is a day in which cat owners everywhere are encouraged to hug their cats. The more dedicated amongst them will not need this encouragement, of course, but it is always good to be reminded of our feline friends.

The obvious downside to the day as that people without cats may be left out. This need not be the case, however – it should be straightforward enough to simply adapt it into “Hug Someone Else’s Cat Day”.

So, whether or not you are the proud house mate of a purring kitty, Hug Your Cat Day is the perfect excuse to put a bit of warmth and companionship into your life. No matter what’s going on around you, no matter how bad or troubling things get, you can always count on your furry friend to be there for you.

National Moonshine Day

Quote:”Well, between Scotch and nothin’, I suppose I’d take Scotch. It’s the nearest thing to good moonshine I can find.”
~ William Faulkner

Moonshine is a rich and powerful distillation that has had a rich literary history and a complicated political one. What isn’t complicated is the delicious flavor of this most notorious of alcoholic beverages. No longer illegal, there has been a growing body of delicious flavors and producers that are bringing this to the everyman. Moonshine Day celebrates both its history, and its return to the market.

History of Moonshine Day

The history of moonshine really begins with the history of the word, it’s an evocative term that brings to mind everything from faerie dappled hills to secreted copper stills among the hillsides of the Appalachian’s, but where did it actually come from? As it turns out the most likely origin is actually from Wiltshire County in England, which at one time held smuggling as one of its most important industries.

Moonrakers were smuggling Brandy, and in one case stored it at the bottom of a village pond. Late one night they were attempting to retrieve it when two customs officers came by to ask their business. Thinking fast, they responded that they were trying to retrieve a round cheese (The moon being made of it, after all) and the customs officers thought them simple. Thus the term ‘Moonrakers’ came to pass.

The term for Moonshine was thought to be derived from that story. But what is Moonshine? Moonshine is a white whiskey made by distilling corn, and it was thought that it became a popular income source in the Appalachian Mountains due to the difficulty involved in moving corn. The base ingredients in moonshine is a malt of corn, barley, and rye, and creates a delicious and powerful blend.

HIV Long-Term Survivors Day

Quote:The greatest grand challenge for any scientist is discovering how to prevent the spread of HIV and finding the cure or an effective vaccine for AIDS.
~ Philip Emeagwali

When HIV first became apparent as an epidemic 30 years ago, the life expectancy for those who became infected was not good, often coming in under 19 years. In recent years that rate has improved to 53 years (for those infected at age 20), meaning that HIV sufferers have a lifespan nearly as long as that of an uninfected person. HIV Long-Term Survivors Day celebrates those who have been living with HIV for decades, and are still surviving today.

History of HIV Long-Term Survivors Day

HIV Long-Term Survivors Day was established as part of aids.gov to help raise awareness of the aging face of HIV. Today over 59% of people who are infected with HIV and living with it are over 50 years of age. Needless to say, that is both a beacon of hope as well as a note for concern, and we’ll soon be living in a world where 70% of people with HIV are over age 50. Living to a ripe old age was a dream that was stolen from those who had become infected with HIV in years past, and this increasing number speaks of a greater hope as well. That before long there will be no one living with HIV, the epidemic is almost over.

But for those still living with it, special concerns exist. Those who have lived with HIV the longest have typically developed resistances to multiple drugs used for treating their symptoms, and the ongoing battle with HIV may have left them with physical damage. In part due to having taken medications that were less effective, and caused both cardiovascular and neuropathy. Long-term survivors require a higher level of specialized care, and HIV Long-Term Survivors Day is focused on raising awareness of these needs.

Drive-In Movie Day

There’s some fantastic memories for people that center around the classic venue of the drive-in theater. Whether it’s sitting with your sweetheart clinging to you as you watch the latest horror flick rolling on the giant silver screen, or laughing with your family in the back of your pickup truck at the most recent family comedy, there is something amazing about the Drive-In. Drive-In Movie Day celebrates this age old tradition, and helps to bring awareness to the fact that there are still dozens of these facilities open and operating all over the U.S.

History of Drive-In Movie Day

This history of Drive-In Movie Day is literally the history of the Drive-In theater, and how it was born out of one son’s love for his mother. In 1933 Richard Hollingshead noticed a recurring problem with theaters, his mother simply was unable to find a comfortable way to sit in the seats provided by the theaters, but loved the cinema. He started trying to come up with a solution, but reinventing the theater seat just didn’t seem a viable solution.

They were already designed to provide the maximum amount of comfort possible while still packing in as many people as possible. With some time and a lot of experimentation, Richard slowly starting find the best combination of elements for an outdoor movie viewing experience. This was more difficult than it sounded as he dealt with issues like protection from the rain, best placement of cars for maximum viewing ability, and how to get the sound to broadcast in a reliable and enjoyable way. Daunting though the task was, he wasn’t going to allow it to get in the way of his ambition, and in May of 1933 he received a patent and opened his first theater.

After the success of Park-In Theaters, Inc, the idea spread like wildfire, and drive-in theaters were soon appearing in cities all over the U.S. They reigned as king of the movie-going experience ever since, until things started to decline in recent years. Efforts are made to preserve them and keep them in operation, and there are 500* still running all over the US.

* There Are 338 Drive-In Theaters Left in America

Global Running Day

[Image: GRD-Million-Kid-Run-logo-Bluev2_Final_2....k=tBWqkW80]

The pavement under your feet, the crisp snap of early morning air, the pounding rhythm as you cross the distance on long flowing stride at a time. Sweat trickling down your neck, the sun on your skin, your lungs burning with joyous exaltation as your heart beats a rapid but steady staccato in time with your running legs. This is the joy of running, and every year millions of people all over the world find themselves out on the open road experiencing the joy, the thrill, the pain, of recreational running. Running Month celebrates this intrepid souls and their dedication to health and exercise, we should all join them.

History of Running Month

Running Month was established to bring together those people who absolutely love running. Running describes a particular gait of movement where, in general, both feet leave the ground at some point during the stride. That’s not to say that running always happens at the same speed, even in the same person. Jogging and Sprinting are both considered forms of running, but are distinctly different from a standard ‘run’.

Believe it or not, humans couldn’t always run. Admittedly, it was a long time ago when that was the case. When Australopithecus (Our first upright ancestor) kept evolving, we gained the ability to have a long striding run nearly 4.5 million years ago. It was vital to our existence as a species as we engaged in what is known as ‘persistence hunting’, where catching the prey often involved days long hunting to track and wear the animal down until it could no longer flee, and collapsed from pure exhaustion.

Eventually competitive running was born out of our love of ceremony and religious festivals throughout the world. What was done for religious purposes began being done for entertainment, and eventually (probably sooner than later) for competition. Running Month celebrates the entire history of running month and everything it meant to our ancestors, and to our people today.

National VCR Day

[Image: D_07_Natl-VCR-Day-e1433533701151.jpg?resize=400%2C265]

They were the hallmark of movie watching in our youth, carrying films home from our local Blockbuster for a night of family fun and entertainment. Together we’d gather around the huge cathode ray tube TV’s in our living room, not even thinking to complain about the static lines that occasionally would run across the screen from a movie that had been worn with love from re-watching. VCR Day comes each year to remind us to take some time to appreciate the nostalgia of the tech of yesteryear.

History of VCR Day

The VCR actually came along a lot earlier than most people think, first being developed in 1956 and sent into the world. It was until 1970 that this technology actually became readily available for the home user. As anyone who lived through that era knows, the technology absolutely boomed at that time and soon it was part of the world we lived in. Cassette tapes appeared in every home, and people began collecting all their favorite movies in the latest format.

But that wasn’t all, as the technology improved hand held recorders became available, and family events began being taken down for posterity. From family holidays to weddings and funerals, everything was being recorded in the VHS format. Even events on TV were being recorded, and what was once a case of ‘miss your show, wait for the rerun’ became a case of ‘I have no idea how to program this VHS recorder to record what I watch’. So ubiquitous was this that it actually became a measuring stick for people’s intelligence “Oh your father will never be able to do that, he can’t even program the VCR!”

World Oceans Day

[Image: Oceans-Matter-Celebrate-World-Oceans-Day...ources.jpg]

Quote:We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch – we are going back from whence we came.
John F. Kennedy

66% of the world is covered in a blanket of rich vibrant blue, from its depths once came all life on the Earth and it continues to house an immense amount of life. This blanket is the world’s oceans, and they serve as one of the most popular vacation spots in the world and play a vital role in the economy of countries all over the world. Across the briny deep massive amounts of cargo cross each year, and it still serves as the primary thoroughfare for trade. World Ocean’s Day celebrates the ocean and the important role it plays in our lives.

History of World Ocean’s Day

In 2008, the UN gathered and uniformly created World Ocean’s Day. First proposed in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro during the Earth Summit. The Ocean has been an incredibly important part of human history, and the holiday was established with the intent of celebrating our connection to the sea and raise awareness about the various dangers it faces. There are nearly 200,000 identified species that live in the ocean, but the number of actual species that reside there is likely in the millions.

Even with that being the case, there are still problems with over-fishing, and the subsidies that are given for fishing in countries all around the world are causing depletion of the game species. This has led to efforts to restore the fishing industry being undermined, and the industry bringing in $50 billion a year less. This is just one of the many factors that should have us all celebrating World Ocean’s Day and raising awareness about all the issues our big blue’s face.

Farm Workers Day

Farm Workers Day is a day to celebrate and be grateful for all the hard work that farmers do to keep fresh food coming. Vegetables, meat, herbs – the staples of your grocery bag all started out on a farm.

It’s sometimes hard for us to remember how lucky we are to have access to fresh produce, and we are somewhat disconnected from the roots – literally – of our food when we see it all packaged up in the supermarkets. On Farm Workers Day, we are reminded to thank farmers for making it all possible.

Farm workers are often on the farm from sunrise to sunset – so it’s no wonder that they have a day for them!

The History of Farm Workers Day

Farming and agriculture have been a huge part of keeping humanity thriving since we were intelligent enough to cultivate food. In fact, the act of farming has been traced back to way back in the Neolithic era.

As far as we know, the first society to actively engage in farming on a larger scale was the Sumerians, who had a labor force specializing in farming. They also constructed irrigation methods to grow their crops and had a strict harvesting pattern across the year.

Farm workers are those in the fields, picking crops and looking after animals. With the advances in technology, specifically in farming, in the last century or so farm workers have found their work becoming even more specialized.

When we talk about a farmworker, this can have quite a broad meaning. It could mean someone hired by a farm to take part in any activities on the farm, but it can also mean someone who is hired solely to be involved in production – such as harvesting.

Working outside for long periods in all kinds of climates, and the bending and crouching needed for harvesting – not to mention the dangers of using farm machinery and being around some big and easily riled animals – can be very tough on farm workers. Farm Workers Day is about thanking farm workers for their hard work.

National Donald Duck Day

Donald Duck is one of the most iconic characters of the Disney franchise and has, for multiple generations, been one of the hallmarks of childhood and innocence. Also, of rage driven spite filled incoherent rambling while spraying the area around you like a sprinkler in high summer. There was something in his tendency to fly completely off the handle and rail at the slightest provocation that touched a part of us all. Everyone had times when they’ve just had enough, and Donald gave us the perfect way to respond. By raging incoherently while stamping our feet. It pays to lose your cool once in a while.

History of Donald Duck Day

Donald first appeared to us in a 1934 film called The Wise Little Hen, a retelling of the original little red hen story. Throughout Donald is repeatedly asked to help plant the corn, and harvest the corn, each time finding him claiming some form of ailment that prevents him from participating. If you’ve seen this episode or read The Little Red Hen. Unlike that parable, The Wise Little Hen took a more direct approach to showing her displeasure. She told Donald she’d cure him of his ailment so he could eat the corn… and gave him castor oil.

While that was his first appearance, the angry rage filled Donald we came to know and love didn’t really show up until Orphan’s Benefit, and it was also then that his relationship with Mickey was formed. Since then he has gone on to appear in video games, episodes of cartoons, and stands out as the Disney character who has appeared in the most films to date, outstripping even Disney Mascot Mickey Mouse. Apparently, there’s something about a rage-filled duck we just can’t get enough of.

World Doll Day

[Image: conserve-and-studied-because-let%E2%80%9...told.1.jpg]

World Doll Day was established on June 14, 1986 by a lovely lady named Mildred Seeley, to celebrate not only dolls, but caring, nurturing love and the people offering it, in general. This day is symbolised by Boots Tyner’s logo depicting a child holding a bisque doll, as a symbol of the significance of dolls in early childhood for both girls and boys.

The day is traditionally celebrated by giving a doll to someone, anyone, child or adult, but whichever way you want to proceed with the festivities is up to you. Granted, dolls are much cheaper and more accessible now than they used to be, and children don’t care much if they’re made of porcelain or plastic, as long as they have long hair. Still, it’s nice to at least remember the dolls and toys that may have come your way throughout your life, the people who gave them to you and the message they conveyed.

Newer generations may miss out on the chance to care for a mini-version of themselves, and little girls nowadays are more preoccupied with other aspects of life, such as manicures and fashion, than they are with nurturing for young ones. Luckily, it’s not frowned upon these days for boys to play with dolls, and so the tradition of giving a doll could still carry on for generations to come.

Worldwide Knit in Public Day

Quote:”Properly practiced, knitting soothes the troubled spirit, and it doesn’t hurt the untroubled spirit either.”
~ Elizabeth Zimmerman

Doubtless, we’ve all received those wonderfully knitted sweaters from our grandparents as we were growing up, but things have changed in the past decades. Knitting is no longer the province of the elderly but has been taken up by all ages as a way to create something lovely, to promote social change, and to spend some time peacefully meditating as they knit one, purl two their way to higher consciousness. Alright, that may be a bit hokey, but it is a relaxing practice often best enjoyed with a bottle of wine.

History of Worldwide Knit in Public Day

The world has knitter Danielle Landes to thank for World Wide Knit in Public Day (W.W.K.I.P.D) – and to say that the world’s knitters have turned out in their droves to support her quest to show that knitting is not just for grannies is something of an understatement. Each event – known as a KIP and brandishing the slogan ‘Better Living Through Stitching Together’ – is run by local groups and despite its reputation as a single day often takes the form of a week-long celebration of both knitting and alternative fiber art forms. The popularity of these KIPs continues to grow, with groups often choosing a theme for their particular event. Popular themes include knitting for hospitals, community art projects, environmental concerns, and premature babies – all of which are worthy causes to benefit from those with a love of yarn.
