Panic attacks and alcohol
#41
So an update - I ran out of Valium a week ago, and this week I start getting the panic and alcohol urges again for the first time

I only had small doses of Valium - two lots of 28 5mg but what a difference it made to me.

I need to sort out a proper course of this stuff but am surprised at how effective the meds are without any particular side effects or noticeable impact...

Nice info catalyst

One consistent message I am hearing is that a Drs own personal believes can have a bad impact on your health!

Anyway to answer the question i started seeing a psychiatrist 3 years ago and he basically prescribes any medication I want.

I find temazepam or nitrazepam works the best for my anxiety.  Also some may laugh but oxycodone also works very well for anxiety and panic attacks.

But all those 3 medications are no good for long term use although I have been using them everyday for the past 2.5 years. not good

Everyone reacts different to medications for example diazepam(valium) has never worked at all for me.
Why these idiot Quacks can't seem to differentiate between chronic anxiety and depression is totally beyond me. I'm in the same boat with you catalyst although I do not, and will not, take anti-depressants. I experience periodic intense anxiety attacks  ao have a condition which results in essential tremor type shaking of my hands under stress. These conditions have been the bane of my adult life.

Most SSRI's list anxiety as a side effect in their advertisements. So why, for the love of God, are you being prescribed a med which has anxiety listed amongst the known side effects? Well, I will tell you why: 1.) Prescribing this type of medication returns big $$$ to the drug companies and, 2.) Most of us have "Physician Assistants" as our Primary Care Physicians. There are some really good PA's out there, and many are really good people trying to do the best they can for you. That said, the fact remains that they are not actual Doctors and that they are on the 2nd or 3rd line as PA's either because they could not afford to become Doctors, or they were not smart enough to make the grade.

The whole system pisses me off and that is why I have taken some aspects of my healthcare into my own hands.

(I timed-out on my reply, this is my full reply to catalyst)

Good post catalyst and I wish you the best of luck in your treatment.

So unfortunately I have been out of diazepam for 2 weeks and the drink urges are backs

Not as strong so not drinking as much as before but still daily

This only re-confirms my thoughts on this thread about the real positive effect on me of Valium.

ok, some vendors whom carry valium are getting delivery through in case u want to try. its a crying shame a regular doctor cannot treat u as patients were treated even seven yrs ago.

u r doing well though it sounds. stay well. May u be granted peace and the release from any physical and emotional need for the alcohol i pray.

You will be in many a person's prayer here. It cannot hurt.

In some parts of the US it is very difficult to book an appointment with a psychiatrist, most in my area are treating children with ADHD and people with profound mental illness, like suicidal depression, psychosis etc.. They seem to have no time for the panic attack, anxiety disorder types, or are interested in prescribing some awful mood stabilizer, in my limited experience.

Ug dealing with a panic attack now, I think it's subsiding, took a Klon. and (I know, I know...) have a glass of red wine. It's crazy sometimes it's the silliest things that can set them off...a house that needs cleaning, a stupid pie crust that won't fit over the pie pan....a friend coming over with her child and wanting them to not have to see my mess toy filled house.....but then, I can see with a light, that it IS ok...it is....she won't judge me, she has a child too, and toys everywhere...but it's a brain issue, I'm working on breathing and being at peace...but, sometimes they just show up completely unexpected.....ug. It will be ok, I do know that...breathing tightened, but getting better. Ug. Love you guys...

Wow I completely relate comedaygoday. It took me awhile to realize that I had anxiety because it was just the everyday that got to me. It's always there. It wasn't until I felt some relief from my anxiety that I realized that my anxiety is my constant companion like my shadow. I just can't see it sometimes

I don't do anti depressants either and I get irritated when they start slinging the mood stabilizers.  Not everyone who uses the phrase, 'racing thoughts' is bipolar.  They always have a way of taking severe anxiety and turning it into something else.
