Flu Season From Hell Keeps Getting Worse
Now your kids are spreading it. More than 50,000 deaths are expected before it finally ends.

Children returning to school after the winter holidays appear to be sharing more than just their new toys. They are driving influenza infections to levels not seen since the swine flu pandemic of 2009, public health officials said. By the time this flu season is over, experts said, more than 50,000 Americans will be dead.

While the year’s flu activity is actually starting to cool in some regions, it remains high across most of the country and is gaining in other areas, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Mortality rates, which trail infections, spiked sharply, with seven additional children dying from the infection over the past week, said CDC Director Brenda Fitzgerald. Thus far, 37 children have died as a resistant strain of the virus dominates the season. The government said that number may double before its over.

“This rapid increase in cases that we have been seeing is after the winter holidays, and while it’s among all ages, it’s higher in children,” said Dan Jernigan, director of the influenza division at the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. “It looks like a big part of the later January activity is flu transmission from kids returning to school.”

There are several unique, worrisome aspects to this season’s outbreak:

It’s hitting everywhere at once; it’s continuing rather than peaking quickly; and it’s affecting a broader range of older Americans than in the past. The entire continental U.S. reported widespread flu every week for the past three weeks, Jernigan said.

“We often see different parts of the country light up at different times, but for the past three weeks the entire country has been experiencing lots of flu, all at the same time,” he said, adding: “We have several weeks to go.”
The season is shaping up to be similar to the epidemic of late 2014 and early 2015, which entailed 710,000 hospitalizations and 56,000 deaths, according to the CDC. The agency is expecting similar numbers this year, Jernigan said.

Activity levels vary in different states, however. Hospitalizations in California are running at four times the level seen in 2014 and 2015, while Minnesota’s rate is double. In New York, the numbers are starting to surpass the national average.

An additional, unexpected finding is the flu’s impact on middle-aged Americans, who typically withstand it pretty well. While hospitalization rates are predictably highest among the elderly, younger baby boomers aged 50 to 65 are in second place, Jernigan said. This is especially bad news for them, given a new study linking the flu to increased risk of heart attacks.

“Baby boomers have higher rates than their grandchildren right now,” he said. “Those folks are ones who really would benefit from having a higher vaccination coverage.” And not only for their own benefit, or even their families. These Americans are at the peak of their careers with many in managerial roles, Jernigan explained. When they’re home sick in bed, it can negatively impact their businesses.

i thought it was only in EU that it was bad but seems its all over the globe - dont watch news much, i had flu several months back that nearly put me to my knees in a matter of days,so rest is true option but this strain seems gotten way worse every second person seems to have have it or has it, weather doesn't help either since some days its really mild just to drop to freezing temps next day.
whoever has it take care use up ur holidays and let it run its course, society these days promotes only cash milking and doesnt matter if your barely functioning since docs will hapilly put you on antibiotics and few weeks off but that will cost one fortune instead of just getting time of the work.

I have read that the people in the know about the health concerns like this say that this flu has mutated into a far worse strain that thought could or was.

And they are pushing the mantra, Get The Vaccine, get the vaccine.

Well I have mixed thoughts on that. Hmmm mfg profits, for one.
and the fact that they say the flu it was produced for is not the one running rampant, only 10% effective, so, go figure why.

This is scary to me because I have had lung troubles in the past.

I did get my flu shot back in the fall & I haven't been out in public for awhile. So I'm hoping I don't get it.

Charon, I'm sorry you & your housemate got it. I hope you recover real fast.
This too shall pass. Heart

CDC: This flu season worst since 2009 swine flu pandemic

Federal health officials warned Friday that this years flu outbreak is more severe than any other since the 2009 swine flu pandemic, and that its intensity is still increasing.

Officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in a phone call with reporters that the number of people experiencing flu-like symptoms is increasing. Hospitalizations for influenza are also rising.

What's more, flu activity has stayed at the same level nationwide for about three weeks, said Dr. Dan Jernigan, the director of the CDC’s Influenza Division. That sets it apart from many flu seasons, in which activity wanes in certain parts of the U.S.

We often see different parts of the country 'light up' at different times, but for the past 3 weeks, the entire country has been experiencing lots of flu, all at the same time," he said.

The deaths of seven children from the flu were reported to the CDC this week, bringing the total number of child deaths this flu season to 37, CDC Director Dr. Brenda Fitzgerald said.

Perhaps driving the latest increase in those reporting flu-like symptoms is the influx of kids returning to school after winter vacations, Jernigan said, pointing to a higher rate of flu cases in children.

The number of people who have gone to see a doctor for influenza-like illness also rose this week to 6.6 percent. That means that 6.6 percent of all people who went to clinics or emergency rooms had a flu-like illness.

The number of people going to see doctors for such illnesses is at its highest rate since the 2009 swine flu outbreak, when it rose to 7.7 percent, Jernigan said.
Most people with the flu this season are infected with the H3N2 virus, one of the most severe — and deadly — strains of the seasonal flu. Whats more, Jernigan said, the 2017 to 2018 flu season likely still has weeks to go.

"In seasons where H3N2 is the main cause of influenza, we see more cases, more visits to the doctor, more hospitalizations and more deaths, especially among older people," he said.

and I have seen people at work getting sick and not stay home.

because they don't want to loose pay of course.

having companies offer sick leave with a doctors excuse to cover lost time might keep the spread down.

it has become hell. the entire US map is showing heavy flu activity. does not happen that often. i could swear i read that this has a few more months to get us.

for those whom have it, get better soon. If u have become out of breath by walking up stairs, and that is not normal for you, it is suggested u see a doctor.

My BIL whom never gets sick usually, was told to drink liquids. More impt than food right now. Not sure why. Some got tamiflu. But i heard bad things about that.

May we all be protected and may we be healed.

Really sorry to hear you've all suffered from this flu strain. We're suffering here on the other side of the pond too.

My partner had it before Christmas and I had it over New Year. Friends caught it last week and are just floored by it.

Unfortunately it seems to last such a long time...even after you've got over the "cold" part of it you carry on with the hacking cough for even longer and it really affects your breathing.

I just rested and drank lots of water and took "over the counter" pain killers to deal with the headache and waited for it to go away. Easy for me to do as I'm retired, but a real pain for people who have to work.

Look after yourselves and get well soon.
