Reputation?

Hi all, particularly admins, mods and old hands.

What does ‘reputation’ mean against your user name and how do you improve it? Apart from housework I think I’m pretty reliable but I’m stuck at 1. Now this will be partly due to 30 odd posts in 8 months, but what sort of things improve a rep?

i believe one needs fifty posts to rate another. many do not think to do so.

i like to rate a person to encourage them to post.

but, as we r settling down again in here, maybe people will rate helpful posts again. Or posts in which you share of your self.

But, was a tad bit hectic and not many were doing ratings. And, the newer people cannot yet.

Those of us whom are long timers here are more likely to read ur old posts than ur rep points.

Show concern for another. Help with personal knowledge on a medical issue. Or, share of yourself. Should work.

Good post and I gave you a rating for it.

It has been answered very well by Charon and kristof.

Good seeing ya around zebra1922,  Smile

Hey zebra1922

You are basically building up your credibility on here. No offense intended but when you first sign up we don't know who you are. Every post you make tells us just a little more about you and get to know you better.

Just keep making a few posts out there under topics you are interested or start a thread and let everyone get to know you a bit and the doors will start to open for you. Share any good info you have that might help others etc..

As Linville also stated "t has been answered very well by Charon and kristof" so just follow the basic's and you will build up your rep in no time as long as you post.

Peace

I get the bit about building credibility/trust etc and that can only come with time, I just never knew you could rate people or be rated, but now y'all mention it, I can clearly see the thumps up box.

I'll be sure to add a rating or two as I find some helpful stuff.

And Charon, 1,601? Superstar!

P.S. Thanks for all the rep boosts, nearly double figures in no time. Looks like I'd better get myself out there a bit more. See you all around.

Or a "like" button on FB, but you can add a comment, too. Took me a while to figure this out. Smile

Y'all can give thumbs up to each other while us newbies stand on the sidelines. Looking forward to getting to the other side of the world. Hopefully I can provide some well liked advice as opposed to just hog it all. I could tell y'all the posts I've read and liked but I'd have to start a thread lol.

can you lose reputation?

Are we talking in here or generally :-)

As far as I know in here your rep can only go up (until such a time you do something wrong and get deleted of course!)

The two or three people whom upset every member of staff in an award winning weekend of buggery bollocks "posts" do receive warnings. Not really a positive thing there.

And, we can give negative reputation points. Fairly sure its only staff whom can do so as two members had a shoot out over something silly when we started this IOPList.org, and they gave each other negative ratings for absolute nonsense.

So fairly certain we took away the ability for a non staff member to lower one's reputation points.

I would be more concerned with the overall rating if'n i were a member. Few recover from 67% warning as they become more hostile and obnoxious and figure they will go out with a bang. But, in reality had they complied with the warning or suggestions we made, the warnings do dissipate. One can have a clean slate once more.
