More Herbs, Less Salt Day

Eating a healthy, balanced diet is often easier said than done – it takes thought, time and effort to prepare fresh and nutritious food, when less healthy options are often much easier and more convenient!

More Herbs, Less Salt Day encourages you to take a simple step to re-align this balance, through the use of herbs in home-cooked dishes in place of salt. It doesn’t take much room or effort to grow a variety of fresh herbs, and a little rosemary, thyme, mint or other herbs can do just as much to enrich a dish as a heavy dose of salt.

Individual Rights Day

In honor of John Locke, whose philosophical writings argued for the rights of each single human being, Individual Rights Day is celebrated on August 29th, the date of Locke’s birth. According to Locke, “Anything that a man has as a matter of human rights or civil rights is to remain inviolably his,” and although Locke conceded that humans surrendered some natural rights in exchange for the collective protection afforded by societies, he held that basic individual rights include life, liberty, property, freedom of speech, freedom of religion and freedom to petition government.

Individual Rights Day was initiated by the founder of the Objectivist Party, Dr. Tom Stevens, who supports John Locke’s philosophies regarding the rights of society’s smallest minority and basic unit – the individual. Celebrations of Individual Rights Day include reading about John Locke and his views, reviewing your country’s commitment to the protection of rights and appreciating the value of freedom and the sacrosanct nature of individual rights.

National Grief Awareness Day

[Image: dc65c87bdba063654950387c9f04ec96--grievi...lidays.jpg]

Sometimes even the brightest of days can be dark when the difficulties of life rear their ugly heads. But there is a silver lining to this, there are those that are willing to help us through these darker days. This is all about looking at grief, and raising awareness both of how to cope with grief, and how to help others cope. So look around and offer that helping hand, lend an ear and join us on Grief Awareness Day to show those around us that we are here for them.

History of Grief Awareness Day

To truly understand how to help people, including yourself, cope with grief, sometimes it is best to try and understand exactly what grief is. It is usually in response to the loss of someone or something important in your life. Many times bonds of affection or love exist that make it that much harder to cope with influx of emotions. Yet many of us forget the cognitive, social and philosophical difficulties that can come from losing someone close to us.

Many believe in the five stages of grief, and helping someone go through those stages can be more important than anything during difficult times of grief.

First is the stage of denial, where they do not believe the reason for the grief has even occurred. Just being there during the time they are going through this stage is all that is needed; indeed many people go through this stage when reminded about anything to deal with the grief.

Second is the stage of anger, where the one grieving lashes out at anyone and anything around it. Be careful around those in this stage, as occasionally physical manifestations of grief occur here in very violent forms.

Third is the stage of bargaining, where they are focused more on a belief or what if statements and ideals.

The difficulty with guilt can be a hallmark here, but just being there helps many cope with this.

The fourth stage is depression. This is the moment when they know the grief is real, and it hits them hard. This is not to say they were not depressed before over the situation, but this is when the depression really comes to the forefront. This moment can be very hard to deal with, but helping them by reminding them of the good things can help as much as being there for them. The final stage is acceptance, and this is where they are looking forward, not only back. They will likely never forget, but they will move forward, able to return to normal after a fashion.

These stages are not fully linear; we don’t always go through them once and are done. We can bounce between them for minutes, hours, days or even months. Each person is different, as is their methods of grief and coping with the various stages.

Frankenstein Day

The crackle of electricity, and the patter of rain drops on the stone walls and terracotta roof give an eerie feeling when combined with the dank laboratory that houses various experiments. Give yourself a bit of liquid courage, and step forward to embrace a little bit of darkness in Frankenstein Day.

History of Frankenstein Day

Despite the gloomy weather and almost horrific atmosphere, the experiment comes to life after bolt of lightning is directed through the body of the stitched together cadaver. This experiment was done to imbue life into the cadaver, and worked. Dr Frankenstein, with his knowledge of chemistry and other sciences, created an unknown method to give life to matter that was not living before. This is the first stepping stone to his creating the monster that is called Frankenstein, despite it being referred to in the book as just the Creature. However, on the creation of the creature, the good Doctor Frankenstein is repulsed by his creation, and banishes it as he himself flees. During the course of the novel, the Creature wanders, learns to read, write and speak rather well, learning while hiding near a cottage in the woods from overhearing the speech and reading from some books it had found in the woods. After befriending the blind father of those in the cottage, it is introduced to the family and after being rejected again, it burns the cottage in a fit of rage.

Seeking out the doctor, it finds him, and demands that he make it a bride as it deserves happiness. After assembling the laboratory and a bride for the Creature, Dr Frankenstein destroys the body when he sees the creature watching in a window. Enraged, the creature tells the doctor that he will be there on his wedding night. Fleeing the area, Dr Frankenstein meets up with his intended, and Frankenstein makes plans to defend himself and his betrothed from the creature. Having her stay in their room, he goes out to deal with the creature, only to look up to the window and be mocked with the corpse of his wife.

We Love Memoirs Day

We Love Memoirs was set up on 31st August 2013 by two memoir authors, Victoria Twead and Alan Parks, who wanted to create a place where memoir readers and authors could come together and chat. Victoria Twead is a New York Times bestselling author of “Chickens, Mules and Two Old Fools” and the “Old Fools” series, while Alan Parks is the author of “Seriously Mum, What’s an Alpaca?” and the “Seriously Mum” series. Victoria and Alan were determined to foster a warm community and have always discouraged authors from pushing their own books at readers. The results have been astounding, and WLM has grown quickly. New friendships are formed every day, and WLM meet-ups across the globe have become common. Small wonder that the We Love Memoirs community – which can be found here – is often described as “the friendliest group on Facebook”.

Emma M Nutt Day

Long ago, in 1878, the first telephone operator started working for the Boston Telephone Dispatch Company. What image do you have in your mind when you think of a phone operator? Clean white blouse, sensible ankle length skirt, and a friendly female voice? You may be surprised that the first operator was a man, in fact all of the first ones were. But their reign wasn’t to last, in September of 1878 Emma M Nutt became the first female phone operator, and from that point forward it’s been a woman’s industry. Emma M Nutt Day celebrates this pioneer and all she and her fellow operators have done for communication since!

History of Emma M Nutt Day

As mentioned above, the first operators were all boys, and while we’re not huge fans of the phrase ‘boys will be boys’ in modern parlance, it was definitely something that was well believed back in the early days of telephone. Boys who were put in the position of telephone operators exhibited a basic lack of patience, and behaviors that included pranks and cussing, which just wouldn’t do for the people who were supposed to be the friendly voice of a telephone operator.

So it was that Emma M Nutt came to join the New England Telephone Company, and whose cultured, gentle voice set the standard for what an operator was supposed to sound like. She was a true rock star at what she did too, working a 54-hour week at a rate of $10 a month and memorizing every number in the New England Telephone Company directory. She then went on to work for the company for between 33 and 37 years, ultimately retiring. For a few years she even worked alongside her sister Stella Nutt, creating the first sister pair of operators in history too!

Ginger Cat Appreciation Day

[Image: ginger-cat-adopts-mini-me-evin-minnie-23.jpg]

Quote:”Most of us rather like our cats to have a streak of wickedness. I should not feel quite easy in the company of any cat that walked about the house with a saintly expression.”
~ Beverly Nichols

There’s nothing quite like having a furry footed feline friend bombing around your house and being the best buddy a person can ask for. Dogs may be man’s best friend, but Cats are our bosom companions, even if they can be aloof and contrary. To our mind, that just makes them more interesting! The best of all cats? The orange furred balls of love that are Ginger Cats. Ginger Cat Appreciation

History of Ginger Cat Appreciation Day

Cats have been part of the human experience nearly as long as dogs, and have served as important a role in our lives as our canine companions. It’s likely that cats started living alongside us as a matter of mutual convenience, as our agricultural pursuits created a perfect environment for vermin to gather. These vermin also happened to comprise one of the primary food sources of the soon to be domesticated feline, and so it was convenient for them to hang around. Having become accustomed to our presence they soon moved into our homes continuing their jobs as vermin hunters, helping to prevent the spread of disease and insect pests there.

Today they continue in these roles, but they are also the closest and most loving companions we can have, even if they do get a bit cantankerous from time to time. When they aren’t lying about being the most adorable cuddle puffs you can imagine, they’re sneaking about the house and engaging in their strange but wondrous feline behavior. Ginger Cat Appreciation Day celebrates the most glorious of the feline companions, the ginger cat.

V-J Day

Following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Emperor Hirohito announced Japan’s acceptance to the Potsdam Declaration and surrendered on 15th August 1945, effectively marking the end of World War II. However, the official surrender ceremony did not occur until over two weeks later, and thus President Truman marked 2nd September as the official V-J Day.

It is estimated that anywhere from 60 to 80 million people died during World War II, on all sides of the conflict. V-J Day should be seen as not only the celebration of the defeat of the tyrannical Japanese government of the time, but also the remembrance of those who lost their lives.

Calendar Adjustment Day

Following the British Calendar Act of 1751, Britain adopted the Gregorian Calendar in 1752. However, the current Julian calendar system required them to drop eleven days in order to sync themselves with the proposed Gregorian Calendar. So, on the evening of 2nd September 1752, the population of Britain and its American colonies went to sleep and awoke the next morning to 14th September 1752.

The changeover is also responsible for New Year’s Day being celebrated on 1st January, as before then it had been celebrated on 26th March.

As a result of Calendar Adjustment Day, there was rioting on the streets by those who felt cheated, and demanded the eleven days back!

National Skyscraper Day

[Image: dubai_skyscraper_main_edit.jpg?mtime=20150903132459]

The construction of tall buildings has become so commonplace in cities around the globe that the general public gives little thought to the visionaries responsible for creating a city’s unique skyline. Skyscraper day provides the opportunity to learn more about the architects who commit a dream to paper and the construction crews that make it reality.

Whoever it was that first considered placing dwellings on top of each other instead of side-by-side would be astounded at how modern buildings literally seem to touch the sky. What they may also find interesting is the status that is often attached to living or working at the highest level. Although this analogy is obvious there is another to be drawn from the consequences of a power failure. These are just a few aspects to ponder on a day that is set aside to reflect on man’s apparent conquest of upper space.

Pet Rock Day

Hallowe’en can be a traumatic time for pets. Between the parties, costumes and bombardment of trick or treaters, the non-human components of your family can find themselves a little stressed out, which is one of the reasons to spend the days leading up to Hallowe’en comforting and reassuring them. Thank goodness, then, for Pet Rock Day, offering the perfect opportunity to pamper and spoil the special stone in your life.

Launched in the 1970s by advertising executive Gary Dahl, the pet rock was an antithesis to those living pets in need of regular care. It did, however, come with a mean “attack” mode. For a mere $3.95 people could adopt their very own rock, supplied on a bed of hay in an well-ventilated box. Like all things, pet rocks are more expensive these days, but you could always catch a wild one for free – just remember that undomesticated rocks may be more difficult to handle…

World Wildlife Day

Every year we lose numerous species to the growth and expansion of human holdings, but through the effort of zoos, sanctuaries, and preservation organizations that rate is being slowed. These groups do amazing work, educating and bringing awareness to people everywhere, all while preserving these precious treasures from Mother Nature. Wildlife Day reminds us that there are creatures out there that cannot speak for themselves, so we have to stand up and be a voice for them. The animals will thank you for it, as will the generations to come who will still be able to enjoy them!

History of Wildlife Day

In September of 2006, the world suffered a terrible loss. Steve Irwin, known colloquially as “The Crocodile Hunter”, died in an encounter with a sting ray that went horribly awry. These normally docile and peaceful creatures pack a powerful punch in their tail, and instead of swimming away as Steve expected, it instead attacked him with its stinger. After hundreds of strikes, Steve believed he had sustained only a punctured lung, but the stinger had actually managed to pierce his heart causing him to bleed out. So passed an amazing man from the world.

What does this have to do with Wildlife Day?

Steve Irwin was an expert on animals, and spent much of his career working to bring attention to endangered species and aid conservation. In his honor National Wildlife Day reminds us that the animals of the world are a precious resource, and of the many zoos, sanctuaries, conservatories, and organizations that work together every year to help preserve them for future generations. If we don’t start taking care of them now, we’re going to lose them. Once an animal has gone extinct, they’re lost forever to future generations, it’s our responsibility not to let that happen.

Newspaper Carrier Day

[Image: ec06f910-6286-42fd-83a2-76319c756a8b.jpeg]

Ever since the invention of the newspaper, there have been newspaper carriers. Those intrepid souls who bring out the latest hot sheet carrying the most recent news have used all sorts of methods to carry out their duties and bring us the best of stories. Whether they were standing on the street corner with a satchel or loading up their trusty Shetland pony with bags full of the daily rag, Newspaper Carrier Day holds them in the highest regard and shares their dedication with the world.

History of Newspaper Carrier Day

Newspaper Carrier Day was created to honor the efforts of the first newsboy hired in the United States by the Museum of the City of New York. It was in 1833 that 10-year-old Blarney Flaherty first picked up his load of papers, answering an advertisement for The Sun that specified that “steady men” could apply. Benjamin Day decided that Flaherty fit the bill, and it was soon after that his cries of “Paper! Get your paper, here!” were first heard calling out across the streets of the Big Apple. 180 years later Newspaper Carrier Day celebrates those intrepid souls who followed in his footsteps.

It’s amazing to think about all of the people who were uplifted by this career as young boys, and the newest generation of newspaper carriers is no exception. The likes of James Cagney, Albert Einstein, even Isaac Asimov and Martin Luther King Jr had their start early in their lives carrying the local paper. It still serves as one of the first jobs young men and women will hold in many local communities, using their bikes to carry out paper routes to deliver the news to people all over their neighborhood. There’s even a Newspaper Carrier Hall of Fame that was created in 1960 acknowledging some of history’s most famous newspaper carriers, including those above and the likes of Warren buffer and John Wayne.

International Day of Charity

Every year, charities all over the world help to save and improve people’s lives, fighting disease, protecting children, and giving hope to many thousands of people. To honour the important work that these many charities do, in 2012 the United Nations decided to nominate an annual International Day of Charity as an official day of recognition and celebration. The reason the date was chosen is because it is the anniversary of the death of Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

This choice commemorates the tireless work that Mother Teresa did by devoting her whole life to charity work. To celebrate this special day every year, the work of different charities all over the word is publicized and celebrated, and people are encouraged to donate money and time, to carry out charitable works, and also to educate people and raise awareness about the many charitable issues worldwide. Education and giving are the essence of this special day.

World Samosa Day

[Image: a63a84669b1f3c2409bf71858b3c2a9b--indian...recipe.jpg]

Quote:“Never hurt a Samosa’s feelings by telling it no. They too have fillings inside.
~ Unforgivably bad pun

If you’ve never had one, you’re missing out. That is the first and most important thing you need to know about Samosas. They are a delightfully fried dish filled with onions, peas, potatoes, cheese, beef or lamb, or any of a myriad of other fillings. They’ve become increasingly popular in the US, and World Samosa Day encourages you to try them out if you’ve never had them, no matter where you’re from. Let’s take a look at the history of these delicious little pockets of culinary love!

History of World Samosa Day

Samosa’s find their origins somewhere in the Middle East, prior to the 10th century. Sometimes during the 13th-14th century they were brought by traders to India, where it quickly became incredibly popular. To this day they can be found in family homes, at fancy restaurants, and even from roadside vendors where they are fried fresh in vegetable oil. Their shell is prepared using wheat or maida flour, and they are then stuffed with a traditional mashed potato, onions, green peas, all with regional spices. To make it perfect they serve it with a mint, coriander, and tamarind.

Interestingly, if you’re wanting a spicier rendition of the Samosa, you don’t go to India. Instead you indulge in a Pakistani inspired blend of ingredients. There they are primarily filled with vegetable ingredients, but the locals enjoy them with a particularly vibrant punch of spices, especially in the souther Sindh province or Eastern Punjab. Of course, it’s also the place to go if you enjoy Samosas so much you want them in jumbo size, then you need to stop over in Faisalabad, where they are made in what are considered unusually large sizes.

Fight Procrastination Day

[Image: 671cf032413eef28a93cf900e27fbeaa-300x251.jpg]

Quote:“I never put off till tomorrow what I can possibly do — the day after.”
― Oscar Wilde

Procrastination can really be the bane of our existence, with another day coming around the corner, there’s no real reason that we can’t put it off till tomorrow is there? Of course not, and tomorrow has another tomorrow, so let’s do it again! It is by this way of thinking that absolutely nothing gets done, and we know good and well that procrastination is us out to get ourselves. But what can we do? Fight Procrastination Day reminds us that it’s up to us to beat this monster, and only we can decide to get up and get done today what was supposed to be done.

History of Fight Procrastination Day

Fight Procrastination Day tells us to get up in arms and start battling the age old beast that is “putting things off”. There are a million techniques to battle it, but procrastination is decidedly an epic level raid monster, and sometimes it seems like a concerted effort of us and our most efficient friends is the only thing that will put it down. The fight against procrastination has been going on a long time, and there have been some really creative methods created to fight it, all to varying success.

What kind of crazy techniques? How about Victor Hugo and James Riley choosing to write naked so it wasn’t a simple matter to head out to drink with the boys at the local pub?

Not necessarily a universally practical method, but it definitely has its high points. Then there are modern versions that are truly remarkable, programs that you download onto your computer that act as a filter according to the rules you set up… Ya know, like if you work at home and want to use it to control your behavior during work hours?

Random Acts of Poetry Day

[Image: 95776cc56032212c698868fc6ec1a57c--hot-lo...or-her.jpg]

Quote:“Poetry is not only dream and vision; it is the skeleton architecture of our lives. It lays the foundations for a future of change, a bridge across our fears of what has never been before.”
– Audre Lorde

As long as there has been language, there has been poetry, taking the shadowed hearts of men and women and finding ways to twist the abstract feelings and experiences of perception into the rising and falling rhythms of the spoken or written word. The spiritual and emotional experiences of mankind cannot be written in simple phrases or plain sentences bound by the rules of grammar and sense, sometimes our inner madness must be expressed through chaos. Such is the purpose of Random Acts of Poetry Day, to unleash the human voice within us and share it with the world.

History of Random Acts Of Poetry Day

Quote:” When power leads man toward arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man’s concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.”
– John F. Kennedy

Every year on the first Wednesday of October, a type and class of people emerge from their shuttered libraries and steam filled coffee shops. In hand they carry chalk and pen, page and dream, and head out into the wild lands of the mundane and banal to spread their hearts blood on the blank page that is the modern world. Who are these intrepid souls? Poets of every stripe, every background, every heritage heading out into the world to ensure that we all have, for just a moment, a poetic and spiritual day.
